Seasonality of nutrient dynamics in three morphologically different seagrass species and their sediments was examined for 1 year between November 2006 and November 2007 at four sites in the Andaman Sea, Thailand. The smaller species, Cymodocea serrulata and Halophila ovalis, showed major seasonal variation in shoot density, above- and belowground biomass, much more than expected from seasonal changes in water temperature and light conditions. All parameters showed minimum values in the dry season due to desiccation during neap tides. In contrast Enhalus acoroides showed less seasonal variation. Only limited seasonality was found in tissue N content of all species, whereas tissue P content responded to the low P concentration in the water column during the wet season. There were no differences in sediment conditions among species, and nutrient pools were generally low. Furthermore there were no significant spatial differences in seagrass and sediment nutrient dynamics, despite varying anthropogenic activity at the study sites, reflecting the oligotrophic conditions in this region.

To clarify differences in community structures and habitat utilization patterns of fishes in Enhalus acoroides- and Thalassia hemprichii-dominated seagrass beds on fringing coral reefs, visual censuses were conducted at Iriomote and Ishigaki islands, southern Japan. The numbers of fish species and individuals were significantly higher in the E. acoroides bed than in the T. hemprichii bed, although the 15 most dominant fishes in each seagrass bed were similar. Cluster and ordination analyses based on the number of individuals of each fish species also demonstrated that fish community structures were similar in the two seagrass beds. Species and individual numbers of coral reef fishes which utilized the seagrass beds numbered less than about 15% of whole coral reef fish numbers, although they comprised about half of the seagrass bed fishes. Of the 15 most dominant species, 5 occurred only in the two seagrass beds, including seagrass feeders. Ten other species were reef species, their habitat utilization patterns not differing greatly between the two seagrass beds. Some reef species, such as Lethrinus atkinsoni and L. obsoletus, showed ontogenetic habitat shifts with growth, from the seagrass beds to the coral areas. These results indicate that community structures and habitat utilization patterns of fishes were similar between E. acoroides- and T. hemprichii-dominated seagrass beds, whereas many coral reef fishes hardly utilized the seagrass beds.

? Premise of the study: Microsatellite primers were developed for the seagrass Enhalus acoroides to investigate genetic variation and identify clonal structure. ? Methods and Results: Four polymorphic loci and 32 monomorphic loci were developed in E. acoroides. Two to four alleles per locus were observed at the polymorphic loci across 60 individuals of two E. acoroides populations. The observed and expected heterozygosities within populations ranged from 0.100 to 0.5667 and from 0.0977 to 0.5079, respectively. ? Conclusions: Our study revealed very low polymorphism in E. acoroides, even at the polymorphic loci. Nevertheless, these primers are a useful tool to study genetic variation, clonal structure, and mating system.

Seagrass are under great stress in the tropical coast of Asia, where Enhalus acoroides is frequently the dominant species with a large food web. Here, we investigate the question of the fine‐scale genetic structure of this ecologically important foundation species, subject to severe anthropogenic disturbance in China. The genetic structure will illuminate potential mechanisms for population dynamics and sustainability, which are critical for preservation of biodiversity and for decision‐making in management and restoration. We evaluated the fine‐scale spatial genetic structure (SGS) and flowering output of E. acoroides, and indirectly estimated the relative importance of sexual versus asexual reproduction for population persistence using spatial autocorrelation analysis. Results reveal high clonal diversity for this species, as predicted from its high sexual reproduction output. The stronger Sp statistic at the ramet‐level compared with genet‐level indicates that clonality increases the SGS pattern for E. acoroides. Significant SGS at the genet‐level may be explained by the aggregated dispersal of seed/pollen cohorts. The estimated gene dispersal variance suggests that dispersal mediated by sexual reproduction is more important than clonal growth in this study area. The ongoing anthropogenic disturbance will negatively affect the mating pattern and the SGS patterns in the future due to massive death of shoots, and less frequency of sexual reproduction.

Marine fungal biodiversity remains vastly understudied, and even less is known of their biogeography and the processes responsible for driving these distributions in marine environments. We investigated the fungal communities associated with the seagrass Enhalus acoroides collected from Singapore and Peninsular Malaysia to test the hypothesis that fungal communities are homogeneous throughout the study area. Seagrass samples were separated into different structures (leaves, roots, and rhizomes), and a sediment sample was collected next to each plant. Amplicon sequencing of the fungal internal transcribed spacer 1 and subsequent analysis revealed significant differences in fungal communities collected from different locations and different structures. We show a significant pattern of distance decay, with samples collected close to each other having more similar fungal communities in comparison with those that are more distant, indicating dispersal limitations and/or differences in habitat type are contributing to the observed biogeographic patterns. These results add to our understanding of the seagrass ecosystem in an understudied region of the world that is also the global epicenter of seagrass diversity. This work has implications for seagrass management and conservation initiatives, and we recommend that fungal community composition be a consideration for any seagrass transplant or restoration programme.
