BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Natural regeneration of white spruce (Picea glauca) after disturbance has been reported to be very poor. Here a study was made to determine whether C compounds released from understorey species growing together with white spruce could be involved in this regeneration failure, either by (1) changing soil nutrient dynamics, (2) inhibiting germination, and/or (3) delaying seedling growth. METHODS: Foliage leachates were obtained from two shrubs (Ledum palustre and Empetrum hermaphroditum) and one bryophyte (Sphagnum sp.) with high phenolic compound concentrations that have been reported to depress growth of conifers in boreal forests, and, as a comparison, one bryophyte (Hylocomium splendens) with negligible phenolic compounds. Mineral soil from a white spruce forest was amended with plant leachates to examine the effect of each species on net N mineralization. Additionally, white spruce seeds and seedlings were watered with plant leachates to determine their effects on germination and growth. KEY RESULTS: Leachates from the shrubs L. palustre and E. hermaphroditum contained high phenolic compound concentrations and dissolved organic carbon (DOC), while no detectable levels of C compounds were released from the bryophytes Sphagnum sp. or H. splendens. A decrease in net N mineralization was determined in soils amended with L. palustre or E. hermaphroditum leachates, and this effect was inversely proportional to the phenolic concentrations, DOC and leachate C/N ratio. The total percentage of white spruce germination and the growth of white spruce seedlings were similar among treatments. CONCLUSIONS: These results suggest that the shrubs L. palustre and E. hermaphroditum could negatively affect the performance of white spruce due to a decrease in soil N availability, but not by direct effects on plant physiology.  相似文献

Michelsen et al. (1995) present results of an experiment in which aqueous leaf extracts of three arctic woody plant species were found to inhibit growth and nutrient acquisition of three graminoid species, and suggested that microbial nutrient immobilisation, rather than allelopathy, was responsible for the observed trends. In doing this they also question previous work proposing that the Arctic dwarf shrub Empetrum hermaphroditum is allelopathic. We suggest that their conclusions are not unequivocally supported by their data. Firstly we indicate that the approaches used for estimating microbial nutrient immobilisation are questionable. Secondly we indicate that most of the trends that they discussed are based on data in which the treatments and controls are not significantly different for the majority of cases. Finally we respond specifically to their criticisms of previous work on E. hermaphroditum. While the question of how arctic plants interact is an interesting one, we conclude that this question cannot be answered by their data. Received: 20 November 1995 /Accepted: 10 July 1996  相似文献

Northern Tierra del Fuego is the insular extreme of the Magellanic steppe, a unique example of a cold-temperate oceanic grassland in South America. We surveyed this poorly known region with a landscape-based procedure to classify plant communities and investigate environmental gradients. Sampling sites were selected with the aid of aerial photos, and floristic composition, soil, topography and landform type were recorded in each site. Classification was achieved with Two-Way Indicator Species Analysis and gradients were analyzed with Detrended Canonical Correspondence Analysis. Two broad groups of communities were separated by the presence of typical acidophilous dwarf shrubs: acidophilous/mesotrophic and neutrophilous vegetation. Along the main floristic gradient, ericoid dwarf shrubs were replaced by forbs and grasses as soil acidity decreased. The acidic habitats were on Pleistocene glacial and alluvial deposits, and had coarse texture, poorly decomposed organic matter, and low base status. The eutrophic habitats were on Tertiary rocks of medium to fine texture and had well-decomposed organic matter and high base status. A second axis of variation was associated to latitudinal position and slope aspect, revealing a precipitation/evaporation gradient. Scrubs dominated by midheight shrubs, with species from the southern forests, were at the humid extreme (higher latitudes/south aspects); and short grass steppes, with taxa commonly found further North in the continent, at the xeric end (lower latitudes/north aspects). Although fertility and moisture seem to control the overall floristic gradient, the extreme vegetation types of the fertility gradient, both having a very simple structure, could be attributed to grazing disturbance. Floristics and ecology of the Fuegian steppe resemble to a certain degree some boreal oceanic systems.  相似文献

Question: Different plant growth forms may have distinctly different functioning in ecosystems. Association of phenological patterns with growth form will therefore help elucidate the role of phenology in an ecosystem. We ask whether growth forms of common vascular plants differ in terms of vegetative and flowering phenology, and if such phenological differences are consistent across environmental gradients caused by landscape‐scale topography. Location: A high‐latitude alpine landscape in Finnmark County, Norway (70°N). Methods: We assessed vegetative and flowering phenology repeatedly in five growth forms represented by 11 common vascular plant species across an altitudinal gradient and among differing slope aspects. Results: Species phenology clustered well according to growth form, and growth form strongly explained variation in both flowering and vegetative phenology. Altitude and aspect were poor predictors of phenological variation. Vegetative phenology of the growth forms, ranked from slowest to fastest, was in the order evergreen shrubs <sedges‐deciduous shrubs <grasses <forbs, while a reverse ranking was found for flowering phenology. Conclusion: Growth form‐specific phenological patterns are associated with fundamentally different abilities for resource acquisition and resource conservation. The weak effect of landscape‐scale topographic factors indicates that variation within growth forms is mainly influenced by local environmental factors not accounted for in this study. On the basis of these results, we argue that growth forms should be considered as predictors of phenology together with the customary use of topography and normalized difference vegetation index, especially when assessing the role of phenology in an ecosystem.  相似文献

Vast areas of (sub)arctic tundra are dominated by the ericoid dwarf shrub Empetrum hermaphroditum. Recent experimental and observational data have shown that Empetrum can be damaged heavily by recurrent extreme winter warming. In addition, summer warming leads to increased soil N availability in tundra ecosystems. In a 7‐year experiment, I investigated the recovery of subarctic Empetrum‐dominated tundra vegetation using a factorial combination of various degrees of aboveground Empetrum removal (simulating the damaging effects of extreme winter warming) and N addition (simulating one of the effects of summer warming). After 7 years no new species had established in the plots. The growth of planted Betula nana seedlings was stimulated by Empetrum removal and reduced by N addition. This Empetrum‐dominated tundra ecosystem was resilient against severe disturbances. Only when Empetrum was 100% removed did it fail to recover, and only in combination with high N supply the subordinate species (notably Eriophorum vaginatum and Rubus chamaemorus, a graminoid and a forb) could benefit. In the 50% removal treatment Empetrum recovered in 7 years when no N was supplied and the cover of the subordinate species did not change. However, when N was added Empetrum recovered faster (in 4 years) and the subordinates decreased. When Empetrum was not removed and N was added, Empetrum even increased in abundance at the expense of the subordinate species. Thus, profound changes in tundra ecosystems can only be expected when Empetrum is very heavily damaged as a result of recurrent extreme winter warming and when soil N availability is increased as a result of summer warming. These changes in species composition upon extreme disturbance events may lead to a wide variety of ecosystem feedbacks and cascade processes as this tundra system is relatively species‐poor, and can be hypothesized to have low functional redundancy.  相似文献

为获得大孔树脂纯化岩高兰多酚的最佳工艺,以岩高兰的地上部分为原料,通过考察6种不同类型树脂(HPD-100、X-5、AB-8、D101、HPD-600、NKA-II)的含水率、吸附率和解吸率的大小,筛选出一种最适合纯化岩高兰多酚的树脂。在此基础上,选择对纯化工艺影响较大的4种因素(上样浓度、乙醇浓度、洗脱流速、洗脱体积),进行响应面法分析得到最佳工艺。结果表明:HPD-600型大孔树脂对岩高兰多酚的纯化效果最佳,其最优工艺参数为:上样浓度0.84 mg·mL-1;乙醇浓度62.15%;洗脱流速0.67 mL·min-1;洗脱体积2.71 BV。该条件下,岩高兰多酚的提取率为229.18 mg·g-1,岩高兰多酚的纯度由8.11%提高到22.56%,回收率为67.78%。本研究为岩高兰多酚的纯化工艺提供了新的技术路线,也可为岩高兰提取物的研究和应用提供参考。  相似文献
