Poa bulbosa L., like many other Mediterranean geophytes, grows in the winter and enters a phase of summer dormancy in the spring. Summer dormancy enables these plants to survive the hot and dry summer. Long days are the main environmental factor active in the induction of summer dormancy in P . bulbosa and elevated temperatures accelerate dormancy development. P . bulbosa becomes dormant earlier than most other species that grow actively in the winter. Previous studies suggested that pre-exposure of P . bulbosa to short days and low temperatures during the autumn and early winter increased its sensitivity to photoperiodic induction in late winter, and thus enabled the early imposition of dormancy. To study this hypothesis, experiments were carried out under controlled photothermal conditions in the phytotron, under natural daylight extended with artificial lighting. The critical photoperiod for induction of summer dormancy at an optimal temperature (22/17°C day/night) was between 11 and 12 h. Photoperiods shorter than 12 h were noninductive, while 14- and 16-h days were fully inductive. A night break of 1 h of light given at the middle of the dark period of an 8-h photoperiod also resulted in full induction of dormancy. Pre-exposure to either low temperature (chilling at 5°C) or to short days of 8 h (SD) enhanced the inductive effect of subsequent 16-h long days (LD). The enhancing effect of chilling and SD increased with longer duration, i.e. fewer LDs were required to impose dormancy. However, the day-length during the low-temperature pretreatment had no effect on the level of induction at the following LD. Chilling followed by SD did not induce dormancy. The relevance of these responses to the development and survival of P . bulbosa in its natural habitat is discussed.  相似文献

The effect of simulated beetle damage (0%, 25%, 50% and 75% mechanical defoliation) on 12 willow genotypes, grown in short‐rotation coppice, was studied in a modified criss‐cross experimental design. The design enabled the above‐ground effects of monoculture and mixed planting to be assessed. Repeated measurements were modelled to produce derived variables in terms of time or, more appropriately, in terms of accumulated day length (i.e. ‘developmental time’) units. These derived variables were then analysed using the REsidual Maximum Likelihood (REML) method implemented in GenStat? (2001) . No significant competition effect between the genotypes due to planting regime was detected. Genotypes Salix viminalis × Salix schwerinii‘Beagle’ and S. viminalis × S. schwerinii‘Torhild’ were found to have the greatest rate of increase in leaves regardless of defoliation and also the greatest height prior to defoliation. Genotype Salix dasyclados‘Loden’ showed the highest rate of growth under the stress of defoliation. When assessing height at the end of the growing season, S. viminalis × S. schwerinii‘Olof’ was the highest genotype for 25% and 75% levels of defoliation, but genotypes Salix aurita × Salix cinerea‘Delamere’, Loden and S. viminalis × Salix burjatica‘Ashton Parfitt’ appeared to be most tolerant by having consecutively lower base day lengths (i.e. increasing the accumulation of developmental units and the length of the growing season) for increasing defoliation. Shorter genotypes tended to be more tolerant, but of the higher genotypes reaching a control height of greater than 3 m by the end of the growing season, S. viminalis × S. schwerinii‘Tora’ and Beagle performed best to 50% defoliation.  相似文献

Synopsis Diel and annual rhythms of activity and vertical distribution of a group of perch in a large laboratory tank were measured for 15 months under a natural light regime at the Arctic circle (Messaure, Swedish-Lappland, 66°42N, 20°25E). Perch were found to be mainly day-active at all seasons. The activity level was correlated with temperature and duration of activity with day length. During winter, the perch group stayed at the bottom of the tank. During the summer, the group spent about as much time in the upper part of the tank as in the lower. The behavior of perch in the laboratory is assumed roughly to mirror their behavior in the field.  相似文献

Summary The phenology and build-up of spikelet number under 10 h day-length were studied in five wheat lines: the multispikelet line Noa, the regular line Mara, the F1 hybrid between them and monosomics 2D of Mara and of this hybrid (lacking the 2D chromosome of Mara). Noa had a longer spike development phase, a higher initial number of spikelet primordia and a slower rate of spikelet production than Mara. The F1 hybrid was similar to Noa in its high initial number of spikelets and to Mara in its high rate of spikelet production. This hybrid had a shorter spikelet phase than both parents. Deletion of one dose of the Mara 2D chromosome from either Mara or the F1 hybrid caused a reduction in the rate of spikelet production and an increase in the duration of the spikelet phase. These effects were due to the reduced dosage of the 2D chromosome. However, in the F1 hybrid this deletion also caused an increase in the spike development phase — an indication that Noa carries on its 2D chromosome a recessive gene for late heading date which acts on the spike development phase. This gene of Noa is independent of the day-length sensitive gene ppd, and is different from Noas dominant gene for large initial number of spikelets.  相似文献

Random nuclear restriction fragment length polymorphisms (RFLPs) were used to assess similarities and relationships among open-pollinated (OP) populations of the cultivated bulb onion (Allium cepa). Seventeen OP populations and 2 inbreds of contrasting daylength response [termed by convention as long (LD) and short (SD) day], 1 shallot (A. cepa var. ascalonicum), and one cultivar of bunching onion (Allium fistulosum) were examined with 104 cDNA clones and two to four restriction enzymes. Sixty (58%) clones detected at least 1 polymorphic fragment scorable among the OP populations and were used for analyses. The average number of polymorphic fragments per polymorphic probe-enzyme combination was 1.9, reflecting that numerous monomorphic fragments were usually present. Similarities were estimated as the proportion of polymorphic fragments shared by 2 populations. Average similarity values among LD, among SD, and between LD and SD OP populations were 0.79, 0.67, and 0.68, respectively. Relationships among the OP populations were estimated by parsimony, cluster analysis of similarities using the unweighted-pair-group method (UPGMA), and multivariate analysis using principle components. Parsimony analysis generated a strict consensus tree that grouped all but 1 LD onion with unresolved relationships to the SD OP populations. The UPGMA analysis placed together the LD storage OP populations. Principal component analysis grouped all but 2 LD onions; the other OP populations were dispersed. The results suggest that LD and SD onions do not represent distinct germ plasm, but that LD storage onions represent a derived group selected for production at higher latitudes. If it is assumed that the sampled populations are representative of all onion OP populations, the lower similarities among SD OP populations indicate that their collection and maintenance in germ plasm collections is important for the preservation of genetic diversity.  相似文献

Plants of Lolium temulentum L. cv. Ceres grown under short days (SDs) can be induced to initiate inflorescences either by exposure to one long day (LD) or by single applications of some gibberellins (GAs), which also enhance the flowering response to one LD. Single doses of up to 25 μg per plant of C-16, 17-dihydro-GA5 were about as effective as GA5 for promoting flowering after one LD but inhibited stem elongation by up to 40% over three weeks. The promotion of flowering but not the inhibition of elongation by 16, 17-dihydro-GA5 was reduced in SDs or in LDs low in far-red (FR) radiation. With shoot apices cultured in vitro, 16, 17-dihydro-GA5 was more florigenic than GA3 for apices excised after one LD of 14 h or more, but less florigenic for apices excised from plants in shorter days. 16, 17-Dihydro-GA5 was ineffective compared with GA1, GA3 and GA5 for α-amylase production by half-seeds of Lolium, a response concordant with its effect on stem elongation. As with GA5, 16, 17-dihydro derivatives of GA1, GA3, GA20 and several other GAs were more effective for flowering and less effective for stem elongation than the GAs from which they were derived. Hydroxylation at C-17 and/or C-16 generally reduced the effectiveness of 16, 17-dihydro-GA5 for flowering. These results extend the known features of GA structure which favour flowering relative to stem elongation in L. temulentum. Moreover, C-16, 17-dihydro-GA5 mimics, in its daylength- and wavelength-dependence and lack of stem elongation, characteristics of the LD stimulus in L. temulentum.  相似文献
