Geographical gradients of persistence in community structure have been suggested to be causally related to underlying gradients of species diversity, environmental variability and/or productivity. In order to test whether the persistence of breeding duck communities was dependent on any one of these three factors, thirty-three years of census data from the Canadian prairie and boreal forest regions was examined along geographical gradients of wetland habitat variability and productivity. For breeding ducks, locally derived patterns of persistence were generally independent of local habitat conditions. Persistence appeared to be related more to patterns of emigration and immigration in response to climatic conditions (i.e., drought) in the southern prairies than to local species richness, wetland habitat variability or productivity. It is suggested, therefore, that analyses of community persistence derived at small spatial scales may be of limited value if the structure of communities is not regulated by local conditions.  相似文献

Summary Comparison of co-occurrences between species on a group of islands with those expected from a randombased null model could provide evidence on community structure. However, it is difficult to decide on the appropriate null model. Gilpin and Diamond proposed a model and a test for departure from it, but this test is shown to indicate significant structure even when applied to a matrix of random numbers. An alternative method is suggested, using the distribution of Gilpin and Diamond's deviation as test statistic, but determining the expected distribution by Monto Carlo simulation, and using many such simulations as a randomisation test of significance. The null model used accepts the observed totals of occurrences for islands and species; it therefore offers a somewhat conservative test. Applied to the Vanuatu bird data that Gilpin and Diamond used, significant departure from a null model is seen, but with an excess of extreme negative associations, the opposite result from that given by Gilpin and Diamond's method. It is not possible to tell whether the negative associations are due to autecology, biogeography, or to interactions between species.  相似文献

Summary The effects of clonal variation, interspecific competition, and climate upon the population size of Apterothrips secticornis was assessed by a series of observations and experimental manipulations. Three clones of the host plant, Erigeron glaucus, consistently supported different numbers of thrips during monthly censuses. When rosettes of the three clones were transplanted to a common garden, relative numbers of thrips on the clones remained the same as those observed where the clones grew in situ. The presence or absence of other hervivores had no effect on thrips numbers in the common garden. Plume moth caterpillars and thrips were observed to co-occur less often than expected in the field but this was caused by differences in habitat selection by these two species rather than being the result of interspecific competition. Populations of thrips were affected by climate, but analyses suggest that the host clone was a more important factor.  相似文献

Summary Fifty four microcosmic communities were assembled over 4 months from a 28-species source pool of phytoplankton using nine different invasion patterns each replicated six times. Three communities from each set of replicates then were invaded with a cladoceran that feeds on phytoplankton. All communities were then treated identically for an additional 4 months. In all nine invasion categories species richness was greater in predated communities. Predation opened communities to invasion by increasing the representation of infrequently sampled species at the expense of more common species. Invasion rate was four times more influential than predation and over eleven times more important than either invasion order or the timing pattern of interspecific arrivals in determining species richness in this system of communitites.  相似文献

Summary Dietary overlap and competition between frugivorous birds and bats in the Neotropics have been presumed to be low, but comparative data have been lacking. We determined the diets of volant frugivores in an early successional patch of Costa Rican wet forest over a one month period. Ordination of the diet matrix by Reciprocal Averaging revealed that birds and bats tend to feed on different sets of fruits and that diets differed more among bat species than among bird species. However, there was overlap between Scarlet-rumped Tanagers and three Carollia bat species on fruits of several Piper species which comprised most of the diet of these bats. Day/night exclosure experiments on P. friedrichsthalli treetlets provided evidence that birds deplete the amount of ripe fruit available to bats. These results indicate that distantly related taxa may overlap in diet and compete for fruit, despite the apparent adaptation of animal-dispersed plant species for dispersal by particular animal taxa.  相似文献

Summary In 4 common Middle-European mainly bumblebee-pollinated plant species (Impatiens glandulifera, Echium vulgare, Aconitum napellus, Symphytum officinale) the influence of patch size on species composition of the pollinator community was studied. Short-tongued species were most dominant in large patches, while small patches were frequented by middle- and long-tongued bumblebees. This phenomenon was extremely obvious in Symphytum officinale and Aconitum napellus, where short-tongued species had bitten a hole in nearly every flower of large patches. Long-tongued species were forced to small patches, where nectarrobbing occurred only exceptionally. In small patches visitationrate (Number of visits per flower per hour) was not lower but either equal or even higher then in large patches. Nectar measurements in Echium vulgare showed, that not only the mean quantity of nectar but also the variance was lower in small patches. As a result, the possible gain can be predicted much more precisely in a small patch than in a large one, and bumblebees have less difficulties in making the right foraging decisions. According to this, foraging strategies depend on patch size. This was confirmed by a computer simulation. The conclusion can be drawn, that many bumblebee species are able to share the same resource by using different patch sizes. Since large flower patches occur mainly in man-made habitats, the dominance of short-tongued species in many bumblebee communities studied by other authors may be unnatural.Supported by the Landesgraduiertenförderung Baden-Württemberg  相似文献

Summary We tested the Enemy Impact Hypothesis, which predicts that communities of one tropic level are organized by the tropic level above. In the case of gallforming insect communities, the hypothesis predicts that gall morphology will diverge, minimizing the number of parasitoids shared among species. We used the monophyletic group of gallforming cecidomyiids (Asphondylia spp.) on creosote bush (Larrea tridentata) to test this hypothesis, predicting that species with thicker gall walls should exclude species of parasitoids with shorter ovipositors and have lower levels of parasitism. Of 17 parasitoid species reared from Asphondylia galls on creosote bush, 9 accounted for over 98% of parasitism. Seven of these 9 species had ovipositors long enough to penetrate 10 of 13 gall morphs measured. There was no significant relationship between gall wall thickness and number of associated parasitoid species (r 2=0.01, P>0.05, n=13). There was no relationship between gall wall thickness and types of parasitoid species colonizing galls: parasitoids with the shortest ovipositors colonized all types of gall morphs and were dominant members of the parasitoid assemblages in galls with the thickest walls. Ultimately, there were no significant differences in percent parasitism among Asphondylia species, regardless of gall wall thickness. We found no difference in numbers of associated parasitoids or percent parasitism in galls with different textures (e.g. hairy versus smooth), different locations on the plant or different phenologies. Our results suggest that enemy impact has not influenced the diversity of this gall community. Gall wall thickness, phenology, location on the plant and surface structure do not appear to influence the distribution of parasitoid species. Other explanations are offered to account for diversity in gall morphology among these species.  相似文献

Summary At two locations in the Sonoran Desert, yeasts were sampled from species of Drosophila, the flies' cactus hosts, and other neighboring sources of cactophilic yeasts to determine the relation between the yeasts vectored by the fly and the yeasts found in their breeding sites. D. mojavensis, D. nigrospiracula, and D. mettleri vectored yeast assemblages significantly more similar to the yeast species found on the rot from which the flies were collected than to the yeasts found on other rots from the flies host cactus or other rotting cactus at the same site. Rots with Drosophila had fewer yeast species than those without flies, suggesting that flies were associated with younger rots. Rots with flies and the Drosophila also had more yeast species with the capability to produce ethyl acetate than rots without flies. The results support the contention that cactophilic Drosophila feed on a subset of the yeasts available in an area, and may act to maintain differences among the yeast communities found on different species of cactus.  相似文献
