We tested the hypothesis that temporally autocorrelated variation should increase the abundance of an inferior competitor sustained by immigration. Temporally autocorrelated variability can increase abundance of the inferior species through effects on demography, the strength of competition, and the mean and variance in the abundance of competing species. We allowed the competitive inferior to immigrate into habitats with constant, variable, or temporally autocorrelated temperature regimes. In the absence of immigration, competitive exclusion occurred, in both constant and variable environments. Immigration permitted persistence of the inferior species, and increased immigration rates led to increased abundance. Temporally autocorrelated variability enhanced this effect of immigration. This 'inflationary' effect suggests that the interplay of immigration and environmental variability can jointly influence the outcome of competitive interactions. Our results suggest that an increase in temporal autocorrelation of environmental variability will cause regional processes to increasingly influence local interactions.  相似文献

RÉSUMÉ. L'étude de la phase de latence et du début de la phase exponentielle de croissance dans des cultures monoxéniques de Colpidium campylum a été réalisée en examinant l'influence de la concentration en bactéries à la fois sur le nombre d'individus, leur volume moyen et le biovolume total de la population de Ciliés. Il est possible de définir plusieurs phénomènes liés à l'abondance du substrat, en particulier une concentration critique conditionnant la maintenance de la population et une diminution du taux d'assimilation consécutive à une suralimentation. A partir des résultants obtenus, la notion de volume minimum nécessaire à la division et l'interaction entre l'énergie nécessaire à la synthèse de matière vivante et celle liée à la nutrition, sont discutées afin d'expliquer l'évolution des cultures. SYNOPSIS. In a study of the stationary and the early exponential growth phases of the monoxenic cultures of Colpidium campylum, the influence of the bacterial concentration upon the number of ciliates, their mean volume, and the biomass of the total ciliate population was examined. It is possible to identify several phenomena linked to the abundance of the substrate, particularly a critical concentration affecting the maintenance of the ciliate population, and a decrease of the assimilation rate following overfeeding. On the basis of the results obtained, an estimate of the minimum volume necessary for division as well as the interaction between the energy required for the synthesis of living matter and that derived from nutrition are discussed, to explain the development of the cultures.  相似文献

Experimental results provide evidence that trophic interactions between ciliates and Daphnia are constrained by the comparatively low food quality of ciliates. The dietary sterol content is a crucial factor in determining food quality for Daphnia. Ciliates, however, presumably do not synthesize sterols de novo. We hypothesized that ciliates are nutritionally inadequate because of their lack of sterols and tested this hypothesis in growth experiments with Daphnia magna and the ciliate Colpidium campylum. The lipid content of the ciliate was altered by allowing them to feed on fluorescently labeled albumin beads supplemented with different sterols. Ciliates that preyed upon a sterol-free diet (bacteria) did not contain any sterols, and growth of D. magna on these ciliates was poor. Supplementation of the ciliates' food source with different sterols led to the incorporation of the supplemented sterols into the ciliates' cells and to enhanced somatic growth of D. magna. Sterol limitation was thereby identified as the major constraint of ciliate food quality for Daphnia. Furthermore, by supplementation of sterols unsuitable for supporting Daphnia growth, we provide evidence that ciliates as intermediary grazers biochemically upgrade unsuitable dietary sterols to sterols appropriate to meet the physiological demands of Daphnia.  相似文献

SYNOPSIS. Autoclavable, natural particulate media simplify axenic cultivation of tetrahymenid ciliates and presumably favor selection for phagotrophy. Viability is at least 2 months at room temperature (24–26 C) for the lipid-sensitive tetrahymenids Tetrahymena setosa, T. corlissi, T. paravorax, T. limacis, and T. patula, also for T. rostrata and (at 12 C), for strains of the T. pyriformis complex and Glaucoma chattoni. A typical medium consists of crude soy “lecithin”+ skim milk powder +Saccharomyces cerevisiae cells. Other useful particules readily available commercially are: whole liver powder, cells of Micrococcus lysodeikticus and Escherichia coli, and powdered residue of liver which had been extracted with 70% ethanol (liver #2). Preliminary experiments indicate that some of these media are suitable for the maintenance of Paramecium octaurelia stock 299S and Colpidium campylum. Such mixtures may serve as points of departure for devising media for more fastidious phagotrophs.  相似文献

1. Trophic heterogeneity, or differences in edibility or resource consumption among species within a single trophic level, is widespread in natural food webs. Here, we test simple food web models that incorporate trophic heterogenity and that make robust predictions regarding food web responses to nutrient enrichment. To test these predictions, we assembled simple food webs consisting of an inedible alga, a mixed assemblage of bacteria, and a protist bacterivore in laboratory microcosms of contrasting nutrient concentrations. 2. Several results were consistent with model predictions. First, increasing nutrient concentration caused an increase in the abundance of the inedible alga, but only in the presence of the bacterivore. Secondly, nutrient enrichment increased the abundance of bacteria, but only in the absence of their bacterivore. Last, nutrient enrichment had no effect on abundance of the bacterivore. 3. Two results were not consistent with model predictions. First, at low nutrient concentrations, the presence of the bacterivore increased the abundance of bacteria. Secondly, although the abundances of the bacterivore and bacteria were positively correlated, some of the lowest abundances of both occurred in the high nutrient treatment. Thus, while our results were generally consistent with several simple food web models, additional explanations are required for selected food web responses.  相似文献

ABSTRACT Studies were undertaken to discover the relative molecular distances separating some familiar forms of ciliated protozoa, and the genetic species they include. Sequences of 190 bases of the D2 domain of the large ribosomal nucleic acid molecule were obtained by polymerase chain reaction from protists of three distinctive groups of ciliated protozoa- Colpoda, Paramecium and Tetrahymena. Evolutionary trees were constructed for each set of sequences using the PHYLOGEN 1.0 string programs. All three groups of ciliates manifested large molecular diversity among strains difficult or impossible to distinguish morphologically. The largest single evolutionary distance within a group was the 75 differences separating Tetrahymena paravorax from the other tetrahymenids. The largest mean distance for a group was the 21.2 for the colpodids. In all the protist groups the large molecular diversity is obscured by morphological conservatism associated with constraints of ancient designs. The molecular diversity within morphotypes argues for long evolutionary coexistence of species differentiated from each other in significant physiological, ecological, or nutritional ways.  相似文献

Studies on multiple predator effects have typically focused on metazoans. Here we examined the effects of multiple consumers on bacteria. Specifically, we investigated the separate and combined effects of two common bacterivorous ciliates, Colpidium striatum and Paramecium caudatum, on a simple bacterial assemblage. Non-additive multiple predator effects emerged for all bacterial species significantly affected by grazing, where bacterial responses in the two-consumer treatment cannot be predicted by summing the separate effects of the two consumers. Some species showed risk reduction (observed responses less than expected), whereas others showed risk enhancement (observed responses larger than expected). We attributed risk alteration to the interference between the two consumers. Contradictory to theoretical predictions, total bacterial abundance in the two-consumer treatment did not differ from single-consumer treatments and consumer-free controls, due largely to risk reduction and compensatory responses within the bacterial assemblage. Decomposition of particulate organic matter was greater in the two-consumer treatment than the Paramecium single-consumer treatment, but did not differ among other treatments. These results suggest that the presence of multiple consumers may have unexpected impacts on the structure and functioning of bacterial communities.  相似文献

Electronmicroscopic study of Coleps, Colpidium, Stylonychia, and especially of Paramecium confirmed the presence of the Golgi complex in these fresh-water ciliates. The complex consisted of numerous dictyosomes scattered throughout the cytoplasm. Each dictyosome included a few flat, partly reticulated saccules lying parallel to a cistern of rough endoplasmic reticulum which was free of ribosomes on the side exposed to the dictyosome. A unique layer of vesicles, characterized by constant size and a thick wall, separated the endoplasmic reticulum from the dictyosomes. The vesicles could be regarded as transition vesicles. Coated vesicles were seen in continuity with some of the flattened saccules. The possible role of the Golgi complex in the physiology of ciliates is discussed.  相似文献
