Abstract: Direct and indirect contact between wild and farmed cervids along perimeter fences may play a role in transmission of diseases like chronic wasting disease (CWD), but no studies have quantified such interactions. At 9 high-fenced commercial elk (Cervus elaphus) farms in Colorado, USA, during October 2003 to January 2005, we used animal-activated video to estimate rates of fence-line use by wild cervids, rates of direct contact between farmed and wild cervids, and probability of direct contact when wild cervids were present. We recorded 8-fold-more wild elk per unit time than mule deer (Odocoileus hemionus) at fence lines. Depending on site, we recorded 0.66 to 46.90 wild elk per 1,000 hours of camera monitoring. We documented 77 interactions between wild and farmed elk involving naso-oral contact and no contact between wild mule deer and farmed elk. Rate of direct contact ranged from 0.00 to 1.92 direct contacts per 1,000 hours of camera monitoring among sites. Given recorded presence of wild elk, estimated probability of observing direct contact during a 2-minute video recording ranged from 0.00 to 0.11 among sites. Risk of direct contact was about 3.5 times greater for single woven-wire fence compared with offset electric fence attached to a single woven-wire fence. We observed no direct contact through double woven-wire fences. Because little is currently known about infection rates associated with infection mechanisms, we cannot infer a level of CWD infection risk from our results, but some form of double fencing should reduce potential for direct and indirect transmission of disease into or out of elk farms. 相似文献

The effect of a juvenile hormone analogue, S-71639, was tested on the eggs, four larval instars and adults of the Colorado potato beetle, Leptinotarsa decemlineata Say, by topical application or after treatment of the foodplant. The last larval instar is very sensitive to S-71639. Treatment of this instar delayed the onset of pupation and prevented adult emergence. Treated animals showed severe abnormalities, but they were not immediately killed at the doses used in this study. Treatment of larvae also interfered with the photoperiodic induction of diapause. Adults, kept under diapausing conditions, started to lay eggs after treatment with S-71639. The ovicidal effect of the compound was rather weak. The implications for practical use of S-71639 in control of the Colorado potato beetle are being discussed.
Résumé L'effet d'un analogue de l'hormone juvénile, S-71639, a été testé sur les oeufs, les quatre stades larvaires et les adultes du doryphore, Leptinotarsa decemlineata Say, par application topique ou après traitement de la plante-hôte. Le dernier stade larvaire est très sensible au S-71639. Le traitement de ce stade retarde le début de la métamorphose et empêche l'émergence adulte. Les animaux traités montrent de graves anomalies, mais ne sont pas immédiatement tués par les doses utilisées dans cette étude. Le traitement des larves perturbe aussi l'induction photopériodique de la diapause. Les adultes placés dans des conditions de diapause, commencent à pondre après traitement au S-71639. L'effet ovicide de la substance est plutôt faible. Les implications pour l'utilisation pratique du S-71639 dans la lutte contre le doryphore sont discutées.相似文献

Vegetation growing in the Ely mining district of White Pine County, NV has been analyzed for tellurium to discover whether
Te accumulator plants existed similar to those that take up Se in great quantities. In addition, the variation in Te content
among species growing in different geological settings was studied. Another objective of this study was to determine the range
of Te concentration in vegetation in regions where the Te content of surface materials was high, as in the Ely mining district,
and low as in various areas of western CO. Trees and shrubs (480 samples) as well as flowering plants (505 samples) and their
associated edaphic materials were collected from six sites in the Ely region and all plant parts were analyzed for Te, Se,
Fe, S, Zn, Cu, and Pb. One hundred and five plants were collected from three areas in western CO.
There is a highly significant difference between Te uptake by trees and that of perennial flowering plants. Flowers contain
significantly more Te on the average than other plant parts. An examination of the Te content of tree parts reveals that leaves
sorb the most and branches the least. When the Te content of edaphic materials is high, there is a corresponding increase
in the Te content of plants. Shallow perennial plants were not found growing in areas where soils contained more than 10 mg
kg−1 Te. Seleniferous species ofAstragalus contain larger quantities of Te than plants in the Ely area, whereas nonseleniferous members of this genus contain much less.
The nitrotoxin producing Astragali contain concentrations of Te greater than that encountered in nonseleniferous species but
less than that in seleniferous ones. No plants contained more than 1 mg kg−1 Te. Iron, Te, Se, and S are coherent in all plants and in most soils and rocks examined. 相似文献

高原鼢鼠(Myospalax baileyi)是青藏高原典型的地下鼠,它主要挖掘取食杂类草之地下根茎,在挖掘过程中形成取食洞道。本文根据此特点,建立了挖掘取食过程中能量代价(E_(?))与取食道结构参数(土丘间距S、侧道长L、取食道半径b及洞道深度D)之间以及取食获能E_(fg)与S和b之间的两个函数关系。分别以挖掘效率极大和取食效率极大为优化目标,导出同样的结果,即相同的最佳土丘间距S_(opt)。通过实验观测,计算出在矮嵩草(Kobresiahumilis)草甸生境条件下,最佳土丘间距S_(opt)=127.4厘米,与野外实测土丘间距(126.30±47.85厘米)无显著差异(t=0.312,P>0.50),表明高原鼢鼠的挖掘及取食行为符合最佳化原则。 相似文献

Crosses between white and black color morphs of the Colorado potato beetle, Leptinotarsa decemlineata Say, used as genetic markers, showed that male beetles ride and guard females to achieve the three copulations required to fill the spermatheca. Multiple matings are necessary for the females to realize their full reproductive potential. Sperm mixing occurs in the spermatheca providing partial sperm precedence. The data support the competitive mate searching theory.
Résumé Différentes combinaisons d'accouplements entre des mutants noirs et blancs du doryphore de la pomme de terre, Leptinotarsa decemlineata, servirent à étudier le comportement de guarde de la femelle par le mâle après un premier accouplement. Les résultats indiquent que le sperme de deux mâles accouplant la même femelle se mélange dans la spermathèque assurant ainsi un certain niveau de précédence du sperme du dernier mâle.La masse de sperme dans la spermathèque était inférieure à sa capacité chez les femelles ayant été accouplées une ou deux fois. Le doryphore mâle aurait donc avantage à demeurer sur la femelle après un premier accouplement afin d'obtenir le minimum de trois accouplements requis pour remplir la spermathèque avant que les autres mâles puissent accoupler cette femelle. Les autres mâles ont avantage à essayer de dérober cette femelle pour remplir eux mêmes la spermathèque ou tout au moins profiter d'une certaine précédence du sperme du dernier mâle pour fertiliser une partie des oeufs.Sans accouplements multiples, la femelle ne possède pas suffisamment de sperme pour féconder tous ses oeufs. II semble aussi que les accouplements répétés puissent augmenter sa fécondité.Les résultats supportent une stratégie reproductive de compétition plutôt qu'une simple maximisation du nombre d'accouplements.相似文献

Single- (33–37 m2) and multi-tree (51–151 m2) gaps were created in an Allegheny Plateau northern hard-woods forest to investigate environmental and herb layer response to canopy opening. After gap creation, noon light on clear summer days was brightest north of opening center. At other times of the day, and when skies were overcast, there was no difference in the light quantity beneath opened and closed canopy. Nor was the distribution of soil moisture or of soil or air temperature greatly affected by gap creation. Species establishment tended to be higher near opening centers; otherwise, there was no pronounced effect of canopy opening on plant cover or species richness during the first four years after gap creation. Experiments were conducted to quantify parasitism of Colorado potato beetle,Leptinotarsa decemlineata (Say), by the egg parasitoid,Edovum puttleri Grissell, on 3 different cultivars of eggplant,Solanum melongena L. Levels of parasitism were higher (P<0.05) on ‘Black Pride’ than on other cultivars. The percentage of egg masses that
were parasitized was 1.2-fold higher (P<0.05) on ‘Black Pride’ than on ‘Harris Special’ and ‘White’. The number of eggs per
mass that were parasitized was 1.3- and 1.4- fold greater (P<0.05) on ‘Black Pride’ than on ‘Harris Special’ and ‘White’,
respectively. The percentage of eggs that were parasitized per mass and percentage of emerged adult parasitoids did not differ
(P>0.05) among cultivars; between 2.1- to 2.6- fold more females than males emerged from eggs on all cultivars during the
growing season.Edovum puttleri suppressed the 2nd generation ofL. decemlineata on ‘Black Pride’ and ‘Harris Special’, but did not suppress populations on ‘White’.
