An important epidemiological consequence of aggregated host-parasite associations occurs when parasites are vectors of pathogens. Those hosts that attract many vectors will tend to be the focus of transmission. But to what extent, and can we identify characteristics of these key hosts? We investigated these questions with respect to the host-tick relationship of the yellow-necked mouse, Apodemus flavicollis, a critical host in the maintenance of the zoonotic disease, tick-borne encephalitis. Transmission of the virus occurs when ticks feed in a 'co-feeding' aggregation. Thus, the number and frequency of co-feeding groups provides an estimate of the potential rate of virus transmission. We recorded the spatio-temporal variations in co-feeding on a population of rodents in conjunction with recording individual host characteristics. Using Lorenz curves, we revealed conformation of tick-borne encephalitis transmission potential to the 20/80 Rule, where the 20% of hosts most infested with ticks were accountable for 80% of transmission potential. Hosts in the transmission cohort were identified as the sexually mature males of high body mass. Therefore control efforts targeted at this group would substantially reduce transmission potential compared to non-targeted control of the population, which resulted in a linear reduction in transmission potential. Focusing on the 'wrong' functional group would have little impact upon transmission potential until a considerable proportion of the population had been subject to control. However, individuals can change their functional status over time making it difficult to predict the contribution of these individuals to future transmission.  相似文献

A process for efficient production of an alkaline β-mannanases from Bacillus sp. N16-5 was established by heterologous expression using Pichia pastoris. A high producing strain was generated by removing the native β-mannanases signal peptide and increasing the copy number of the mature β-mannanases gene. High cell density fermentation of this strain in 1-L bioreactor led to a production level of 4164 U/mL after 96 h of induction. Sorbitol co-feeding and temperature-lowering strategies both increased the β-mannanase production levels. Combined usage of these two strategies achieved the most effective result—the enzyme level reached 6336 U/mL within 84 h, which to our best knowledge is the highest production level reported for the expression of extreme β-mannanase thus far. The strategy described in this work can also be adapted to express other important industrial enzymes with extreme properties.  相似文献

The co-feeding relationships of immature Japanese monkeys in the provisioned situation were studied. The most frequent co-feeders for immature females were diversified as compared to those for immature males. The number of immature females who showed strong co-feeding relationships with their mothers gradually decreased with age in both high- and middle/low-ranking matrilines, but the percent decrease was greater for middle/low-ranking immatures. Almost all immature females who displayed strong co-feeding relationships with adult males were from middle/low-ranking matrilines. Strong co-feeding relationships with mothers among immature males from high-ranking matrilines remained until 4 years of age. In contrast, strong co-feeding relationships with mothers among middle/low-ranking immature males decreased rapidly in the first year of life, and most 1- to 4-year-olds showed no strong co-feeding relationships with other group members. It is considered that middle/low-ranking mothers may not provide their immatures with a secure base for obtaining food in the provisioned situation.  相似文献

There exist many tick borne infections that are of either economic or public health interest. Mathematical models have previously been used to describe the dynamics of these infections. However it has recently come to light that there is an alternative mechanism for the transmission of these diseases that has not been considered in a modelling framework. This is transmission through ticks co-feeding on non-viraemic hosts. This paper extends a simple mathematical model to include this alternative transmission mechanism. The model is used to describe the dynamics of Louping ill virus in red grouse (the viraemic host) and hares (the non-viraemic host). However, these results are applicable to many other systems. The model is analysed using joint threshold density curves. It is found that the presence of a non-viraemic host allows the virus to persist more readily than it would in the presence of a host that simply amplified the tick population. More importantly, if the level of non-viraemic transmission is high enough the virus can persist in the absence of the viraemic host. This result has important implications for the control of tick borne diseases.  相似文献

Lyme disease and Tick-Borne Encephalitis (TBE) are two emergent tick-borne diseases transmitted by the widely distributed European tick Ixodes ricinus. The life cycle of the vector and the number of hosts involved requires the development of complex models which consider different routes of pathogen transmission including those occurring between ticks that co-feed on the same host. Hence, we consider here a general model for tick-borne infections. We assumed ticks feed on two types of host species, one competent for viraemic transmission of infection, the second incompetent but included a third transmission route through non-viraemic transmission between ticks co-feeding on the same host. Since a blood meal lasts for several days these routes could lead to interesting nonlinearities in transmission rates, which may have important effects.We derive an explicit formula for the threshold for disease persistence in the case of viraemic transmission, also for the case of viraemic and non-viraemic transmission. From this formula, the effect of parameters on the persistence of infection can be determined. When only viraemic transmission occurs, we confirm that, while the density of the competent host has always a positive effect on infection persistence, the density of the incompetent host may have either a positive effect, by amplifying tick population, or a negative ("dilution") effect, by wasting tick bites on an incompetent host. With non-viraemic transmission, the "dilution" effect becomes less relevant. On the other hand, if the nonlinearity due to extended feeding is included, the dilution effect always occurs, but often at unrealistically high host densities. Finally, we incorporated the effects of tick aggregation on the hosts and correlation of tick stages and found that both had an important effect on infection persistence, if non-viraemic transmission occurred.  相似文献
