Summary The auditory and tensor nerves of cicadas are mixed nerves containing both afferent and efferent elements. In 17-year cicadas, and in Okanagana rimosa, the auditory nerve contains afferents from body hairs, from the detensor tympani-chordotonal organ, and some 1300–1500 afferents from the hearing organ. Within the fused metathoracic-abdominal ganglionic complex the receptors from both the auditory and tensor nerves form a neuropilar structure that reveals the metameric organization of this complex. A few fibers run anteriorly, projecting into the meso and prothoracic ganglia. Within the ganglionic complex a division of auditory nerve afferents into a dense intermediate and a more diffuse ventral neuropile is observed. In addition, a dorsal motor neuropile is outlined by arborizations of the timbal motor neuron. This neuron is one of several efferent cell types associated with the auditory nerve, and there is an indication that several efferent fibers innervate the timbal muscle. There is anatomical evidence for a possible neuronal coupling between the bilaterally symmetrical large timbal motor neurons. In general, central projections from the auditory and tensor nerves support evidence of a structural layering within the CNS of insects. 相似文献

(1) Male western cicada killers (Sphecius grandis) had elevated, apparently regulated, thorax temperatures during territorial patrolling. (2) Abdomen temperature increased steeply with increasing ambient temperature, approaching thorax temperature when ambient temperature exceeded 35 °C. (3) Both indirect evidence and heating experiments demonstrated the apparent ability to shunt heat from thorax to abdomen. (4) Dead, dry wasps reached lethal temperatures when placed in full sunlight on the bare ground, and substantially lower temperatures on plants. (5) The percentage of males perching was extremely low, occurring primarily during early morning hours. Most perching occurred on plants, and very little on the ground. (6) In contrast to what has been reported for eastern cicada killers (Sphecius speciosus), S. grandis males did not appear to use sophisticated behaviors to regulate body temperature during territorial defense, relying primarily on physiological mechanisms. (7) This strategy may be more appropriate for S. grandis in the hotter, drier environment of the lowland Chihuahuan desert. 相似文献

In the Alectoris partridges (Phasianidae), hybridization occurs occasionally as a result of the natural breakdown of isolating mechanisms but more frequently as a result of human activity. No genetic record of hybridization is known for the barbary partridge (A. barbara). This species is distributed mostly in North Africa and, in Europe, on the island of Sardinia (Italy) and on Gibraltar. The risk of hybridization between barbary and red-legged partridge (A. rufa: Iberian Peninsula, France, Italy) is high in Sardinia and in Spain. We developed two random amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) markers to detect A. barbara × A. rufa hybrid partridges. We tested them on 125 experimental hybrids, sequenced the relative species-specific bands and found that the bands and their corresponding sequences were reliably transmitted through a number of generations (F1, F2, F3, BC1, BC2). Our markers represent a highly valuable tool for the preservation of the A. barbara genome from the pressing threat of A. rufa pollution. 相似文献

The dipteran parasitoid Emblemasoma auditrix locates its host acoustically. Analysis showed that phonotactic female flies usually carry fully developed larvae within their uteri. The mean number of larvae per female at the beginning of the season was 37.9 (range from 10 to 50). The number of larvae decreased rapidly with increasing singing activity of the host cicada (Okanagana rimosa). In high-density host populations the parasitoid is likely to become egg-limited. A possible selective phonotactic responsiveness depending on the number of larvae or the age of the female was tested with song models. Phonotaxis depended on both the temporal structure and the frequency content, but in the field no correlation was found between the number of larvae and the preferences for the acoustic signal. Experiments in the laboratory showed that flies without host contact broadened their phonotactic stimulus range with age. 相似文献

Comparative thermal adaptation in cicadas (Hemiptera: Cicadidae) inhabiting Mediterranean ecosystems
The thermal responses of cicadas inhabiting the Mediterranean ecosystems in Europe, North America, South Africa, and Australia are investigated. A total of 37 species and two subspecies from 17 genera representing eight tribes and three subfamilies of cicadas are investigated. The analysis includes species that are restricted to the Mediterranean ecosystem as well as those which also inhabit additional environments. The data suggest that cicadas adapt to the climate type regardless of particular types of plants within the various Mediterranean communities. Similarly, cicada thermal responses are independent of body size or taxonomic affinities. There is a wider range of body temperatures for the maximum voluntary tolerance temperature than for heat torpor or minimum flight temperatures. This diversity seems to be determined by the subdivision of the habitat used and the behavior of the species. All species possess relatively elevated heat torpor temperatures adapting to the general thermal characteristics of the Mediterranean ecosystem. The data suggest that cicadas adapt to the Mediterranean climate type regardless of the diversity of particular types of plants within the various communities, of body size or of taxonomic position. 相似文献

The thermal responses of 12 cicada species inhabiting Big Bend National Park, Texas, USA are investigated to determine the influence of altitude, habitat and microhabitat. The park provides an opportunity to analyze the thermal responses in animals from a variety of habitats and altitudinal gradients within a limited geographic range. The data suggest that thermal responses of cicadas are adaptations to their specific habitats. No thermal responses are significantly correlated with body size. The maximum voluntary tolerance temperature (an upper behavioral thermoregulatory point) and heat torpor temperatures show significant correlations with altitude. Variability in thermal responses can also be related to the characteristics of the microhabitat selected or the behavioral pattern of a species. 相似文献

1. Laser vibrometry and acoustic measurements were used to study the biophysics of directional hearing in males and females
of a cicada, in which most of the male tympanum is covered by thick, water filled tissue “pads”. 2. In females, the tympanal
vibrations are very dependent on the direction of sound incidence in the entire frequency range 1–20 kHz, and especially at
the main frequencies of the calling song (3–7 kHz). At frequencies up to 10 kHz, the directionality disappears if the contralateral
tympanum, metathoracic spiracle, and folded membrane are blocked with Vaseline. This suggests some pressure-difference receiver
properties in the ear. 3. In males, the tympanal vibrations depend on the direction of sound incidence only within narrow
frequency bands (around 1.8 kHz and at 6–7 kHz). At frequencies above 10–12 kHz, the directionality appears to be determined
by diffraction, and the ear seems to work as a pressure receiver. The peak in directionality at 6–7 kHz disappears when the
contralateral timbal, but not the tympanum, is covered. Covering the thin ventral abdominal wall causes the peak around 1.8 kHz
to disappear. 4. Most observed tympanal directionalities, except around 1.8 kHz in males, are well predicted from measured
transmissions of sound through the body and measured values of sound amplitude and phase at the ears at various directions
of sound incidence.

Cupressus lusitanica seedlings from open-pollinated seeds of 18 families were inoculated with day-old first instar Cinara cupressi. Aphid survival was used to determine the genetic basis and inheritance of resistance to the insect. There was marked variation in aphid survival both between and within families. An individual-tree narrow-sense heritability of 0.76 ± 0.30 shows strong additive genetic control which could allow effective selection and breeding for resistance. Resistant parents produced resistant progeny while susceptible parents produced susceptible progeny. There were notable exceptions as some susceptible parents produced highly resistant progeny, indicating that they had acquired pollen from resistant neighbours. Recovery of aphid damaged trees is evident implying that care should be taken in selecting for resistance. The strong additive variance and potentially high heritability indicate that one cycle of selection may yield a resistant population, while intraspecific crossing may give better results. Implications of the results in a C. lusitanica breeding programme are discussed. 相似文献

We describe the isolation of six polymorphic microsatellites for Cicada barbara (Stål), four of which are also polymorphic for the closely related Cicada orni L. Cicadas from several sites in the Iberian Peninsula, North Africa (C. barbara) and Greece (C. orni) were genotyped at these loci. Polymorphism is higher than that previously obtained with allozymes for these species. One locus allows species diagnosis (nonoverlapping allele size ranges) between C. barbara and C. orni and the others have some exclusive alleles for each species. 相似文献
