The lagoon of Moorea Island was characterised by 12 distinct reef zones. Visual censuses allowed us to document the spatial distributions of recently settled juveniles vs adults of 17 nocturnal fish species among the 12 reef zones. Five distinct patterns in habitat use were found: an increase in the number of reef zones used during the adult stage (four species); a decrease in the number of reef zones adults used compared to recently settled juveniles (two species); the use of different reef zones (one species); the use of same reef zones but with relative densities different (one species); and no change in habitat use (nine species). Overall, this study is the first to explore the use of space by a broad range of nocturnal fish taxa to document the patterns and determinism of habitat shifts between juvenile and adult life stages.  相似文献

Multixenobiotic defence mechanism (MXDM) consists in a cellular system that functions as membrane extrusion pumps effluxing organic compounds out of the cells. In bivalves, it represents a primordial protection against toxic effects of organic xenobiotics in preventing their cellular accumulation. It has raised attention during the last decade for its potential to be used as a biomarker of pollution. This article reviews the fundamental knowledge on the MXDM system in bivalves and the methods proposed to assess its activity. Finally, it reviews the major results of laboratory and field studies that enabled to hypothesise that MXDM could be used as a biomarker of environmental stress rather than of pollutant exposure.  相似文献

Understanding the changes in the technological organization of prehistoric hunter–gatherers is important to research into hominin foraging activities. During the Middle Paleolithic, the coexistence or the replacement between Levallois and discoid technologies has frequently been recorded, but there is still no clear understanding of the reasons for their alternating and fragmented use in the archaeological record. This paper aims to contribute with new data to the current debate, by exploring the chert assemblages from levels O and M of the Abric Romaní rock-shelter. The results reveal that the change from Levallois in level O to discoid in level M is accompanied by the use of different axes of mobility, a reduction in the foraging radius and a more careful management of raw materials. A cross comparison with other archaeological evidences indicates the general pattern in the Northeast of the Iberian Peninsula during the late Middle Paleolithic, in which the use of Levallois technology is associated with chert and high mobility patterns whereas discoid technology is more closely linked to the use of local raw materials and a lower degree of mobility. The modifications to the mountainous environments and to the distribution of preferred prey animals may have influenced the Neanderthals’ mobility patterns and contributed to modifying their technical behaviours in order to obtain better foraging incomes.  相似文献

The behaviour of the Leucine isoleucine Valine binding protein of Escherichia coli as a function of temperature has been examined. Substrate binding measurements showed a temperature dependence of the leucine-isoleucine-valine binding protein leucine complex formation constants. The protein-substrate complex was completely dissociated beyond 70 degrees C. In the range 5-65 degrees C the protein remained active but Van't Hoff's plots indicated changes of the reaction thermodynamic parameters. Large negative delta Cp values (--2.25 kJ mole-1 K-1 between 5 and 40 degrees C and--9.40 above 40 degrees C) indicate important substrate induced modifications of the protein conformation. Scanning calorimetry of the leucine isoleucine valine binding protein before and after addition of leucine was also performed. Two thermal events were recorded when the protein was substratefree and only one, at a higher temperature and more important, when the substrate was added. The results of these two approaches were in agreement in that both methods suggested a binding dependent conformational change of the protein which resulted in a greater stability of its structure.  相似文献

Matrix games, defined by a set of strategies and a corresponding matrix of payoffs, are commonly used to model animal populations because they are both simple and generate meaningful results. It is generally assumed that payoffs are independent of time. However, the timing of contests in real populations may have a marked effect on the value of rewards. We consider matrix games where the payoffs are functions of time. Rules are found which hold in this more general situation, and the complexity of possible behaviour is underlined by demonstrating other conditions which do not hold and an illustrative game.  相似文献

In the Iberian Peninsula, the Late Pleistocene record of small mammal indicators of cold climates is largely restricted to two sets of sites at the eastern and western ends of the Pyrenees. Some assemblages from other sites at the Peninsular centre have, however, recently yielded such taxa. This work describes the remains of three such rodent species from the Buena Pinta Cave, a site in the Sierra de Guadarrama mountains in the Spanish Central System. Excavation campaigns in the cave have taken place every summer since 2003. Thermoluminescence analyses of sediments from levels 2–5 of the site suggest an age corresponding to the middle of the Late Pleistocene, within Marine Isotope Stage 4 or the beginning of Marine Isotope Stage 3. Sieve-washing and picking out of the small fossils contained in the sediments of levels 2–5 yielded several thousand small mammal teeth and other remains, dominated by Microtus arvalis. Smaller numbers of remains belonging to other rodents typical of cold climates were also identified, such as Microtus oeconomus, Microtus gregalis and Chionomys nivalis. Thus, the small mammal record of the Buena Pinta Cave shows that rodent indicators of cold climates reached the centre of the Iberian Peninsula during the mid-Late Pleistocene, i.e., well before the Last Glacial Maximum. These findings represent one of the southernmost Pleistocene records for M. oeconomus in Europe, and the most southerly for M. gregalis.  相似文献
