Rice planthoppers (Hemiptera: Delphacidae) are notorious pests for rice (Oryza sativa) in Asia, posing a serious threat to rice production and grain security. Rice planthoppers harbor diverse bacterial symbionts, including Wolbachia, Cardinium, Spiroplasma, and Arsenophonus, which are known to manipulate reproduction in arthropod hosts. This microreview is to introduce current knowledge of bacterial reproductive manipulators in rice planthoppers, including their diversity, population dynamics, localization, transmission, and biological functions.  相似文献

Spiders have recently emerged as important diversity hot spots for endosymbiotic bacteria, but the consequences of these symbiotic interactions are largely unknown. In this article, we examined the evolutionary history and effect of the intracellular bacterium Cardinium hertigii in the marbled cellar spider Holocnemus pluchei. We showed that Cardinium infection is primarily transmitted in spider populations maternally via egg cytoplasm, with 100% of the progeny from infected mothers being also infected. Examination of a co‐inherited marker, mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA), revealed that Cardinium infection is associated with a wide diversity of mtDNA haplotypes, showing that the interaction between Cardinium and H. pluchei has a long‐term evolutionary dimension and that horizontal transmission among individuals could also occur. Although Cardinium is well known to exert sex ratio distortion or cytoplasmic incompatibility in various arthropod hosts, we show, however, that Cardinium does not interact with the reproductive biology of H. pluchei. A field survey shows a clear geographical structuring of Cardinium infection, with a marked gradual variation of infection frequencies from ca. 0.80 to 0. We discuss different mechanistic and evolutionary explanations for these results as well as their consequences for spider phenotypes. Notably, we suggest that Cardinium can either behave as a neutral cytoplasmic element within H. pluchei or exhibit a context‐dependent effect, depending on the environmental conditions.  相似文献

为了明确自然种群白背飞虱Sogatella furcifera中Wolbachia和Cardinium的感染情况以及Wolbachia与其特有的WO噬菌体之间的关系, 以采自中国7个省区9个地点的白背飞虱为研究材料, 运用PCR检测的方法调查了Wolbachia, Cardinium以及WO噬菌体在各飞虱种群中的感染率和组织分布特点。结果表明: 白背飞虱广泛双重感染Wolbachia和Cardinium, 并且都表现出很高的感染率。白背飞虱各种群Cardinium的感染率几乎均为100%; Wolbachia的感染率也较高, 但雌雄虫感染率差异较大, 雌虫的感染率几乎均为100%, 而雄虫的感染率从22.2%~95.0%不等。另外, 通过不同DNA聚合酶、 不同提取方法的对比, 揭示了DNA粗提样品在基于PCR技术的胞内共生菌检测中的不足之处。对白背飞虱头部、 胸部、 腹部、 足和翅5个不同部位组织的检测结果表明, 不仅在含有生殖组织的腹部有这两类共生菌的感染, 在其他非生殖组织中同样也感染了这两类共生菌; 虽然Wolbachia和Cardinium在寄主的各个组织中均有分布, 但是两者在白背飞虱成虫(尤其是雄虫)阶段的动态变化有明显的差异。进一步对Wolbachia宿主特异性WO噬菌体的检测结果表明, 自然种群雄虫中Wolbachia的感染率与不感染个体中WO噬菌体的比率呈明显的负相关。因此推测, 雄虫中Wolbachia感染率相对较低的原因可能是由于Wolbachia基因组中溶原性的WO噬菌体受到某种因素的诱导已转化为裂解性噬菌体。研究结果为进一步揭示Wolbachia和Cardinium双重感染条件下对寄主的生殖调控作用及其机制、 垂直传播规律、 两者之间的相互关系以及进一步的应用研究等方面提供了重要的理论基础。  相似文献

Wolbachia和Cardinium都是广泛存在于节肢动物体内的一类母系遗传的共生细菌, 可以通过不同方式操纵寄主的生殖行为。Wolbachia和Cardinium感染同一寄主在自然界比较常见, 但是在某些可以同时感染Wolbachia和Cardinium的寄主中其单感染品系较难发现。本研究检测了云南文山(YN)、 海南三亚(HN)这2个不同地理种群中Wolbachia和Cardinium的感染情况; 以双感染Wolbachia和Cardinium的白背飞虱Sogatella furcifera海南种群为实验材料, 运用显微注射方法对双感染Wolbachia和Cardinium的白背飞虱若虫注射不同浓度青霉素G以获得单感染品系。结果表明: 白背飞虱自然种群中单感染Wolbachia比率极低, 本实验用到的海南种群未检测到单感染Wolbachia成虫; 通过显微注射青霉素G的方法可以从白背飞虱双感染品系中筛选获得单感染品系, 当青霉素G注射浓度为0.2%(w/v), 注射龄期为5龄时得到单感染品系效率最高; F5代的检测结果显示显微注射得到的单感染品系可以稳定遗传。本研究为获得单感染品系白背飞虱提供了快捷方法, 同时为其他双感染Wolbachia和Cardinium节肢动物不同感染品系的筛选提供参考。  相似文献

本研究旨在明确我国不同地区草地贪夜蛾Spodoptera frugiperda共生菌感染差异和耐寒能力差异。采用16S或23S rDNA等定性检测方法,鉴定草地贪夜蛾共生菌种类并测定其感染率,通过邻接法(Neighbor-joining)构建系统进化树,进行共生菌系统发育分析。从我国8个地区采集的草地贪夜蛾幼虫中鉴定出2种内共生细菌,分别为Arsenophonus和Cardinium。两种共生菌在不同地理种群中的感染率存在显著差异,其中Arsenophonus感染率总体较低,云南保山种群感染率最高,为20.0%,其次是广西南宁种群(15.5%),贵州贵阳和江苏盐城的种群感染率均为1.7%,而广东广州、江苏无锡以及湖北宜昌和孝感种群中均未发现Arsenophonus的感染;Cardinium感染以江苏无锡种群最高,达96.7%,云南保山和广东广州种群感染率分别为93.3%和86.7%,贵州贵阳种群为53.3%,湖北孝感和宜昌感染率则分别为30.0%和18.3%,江苏盐城种群感染率也为18.3%,而广西南宁种群中未发现该共生菌。对8个地区草地贪夜蛾的耐寒能力比较表明,江苏盐城和湖北孝感种群耐寒能力最弱,-6℃下死亡率分别为76%和69%,显著高于其它6个种群,后6个种群间无显著差异,死亡率在35%~49%之间。我国不同地区草地贪夜蛾在共生菌感染和耐寒能力上均存在差异,但未发现共生菌感染与耐寒能力的相关性。  相似文献

Brevipalpus californicus (Banks) was infected with ‘Candidatus Cardinium’ bacteria (Cardinium). Tetracycline-treated females produced many male progeny even though untreated females produced only female progeny. B. californicus appears to be feminized by Cardinium. The values for net reproduction rate (R0), generation time (T) and intrinsic rate of natural increase (rm) calculated for B. californicus were 7.48/day, 31.45 days and 0.064/day, respectively. The comparison of infected females with uninfected males and other closely related species, indicated that Cardinium does not have a negative effect on the fitness of B. californicus.  相似文献

Abstract Endosymbionts are important components of arthropod biology. The whitefly Bemisia tabaci (Gennadius) (Hemiptera: Aleyrodidae) is a cryptic species complex composed of ≥ 28 putative species. In addition to the primary endosymbiont Portiera aleyrodidarum, six secondary endosymbionts (S‐endosymbionts), Hamiltonella, Rickettsia, Wolbachia, Cardinium, Arsenophonus and Fritschea, have been identified in B. tabaci thus far. Here, we tested five of the six S‐endosymbiont lineages (excluding Fritschea) from 340 whitely individuals representing six putative species from China. Hamiltonella was detected only in the two exotic invaders, Middle East‐Asia Minor 1 (MEAM1) and Mediterranean (MED). Rickettsia was absent in Asia II 1 and MED, scarce in Asia II 3 (13%), but abundant in Asia II 7 (63.2%), China 1 (84.7%) and MEAM1 (100%). Wolbachia, Cardinium and Arsenophonus were absent in the invasive MEAM1 and MED but mostly abundant in the native putative species. Furthermore, phylogenetic analyses revealed that some S‐endosymbionts have several clades and different B. tabaci putative species can harbor different clades of a given S‐endosymbiont, demonstrating further the complexity of S‐endosymbionts in B. tabaci. All together, our results demonstrate the variation and diversity of S‐endosymbionts in different putative species of B. tabaci, especially between invasive and native whiteflies.  相似文献

High incidence of the maternally inherited bacterium Cardinium in spiders   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2  
Inherited bacteria are now recognized as important players in arthropod evolution and ecology. Here, we test spiders, a group recently identified as possessing inherited bacteria commonly, for the presence of two reproductive parasites, Cardinium hertigii (Bacteroidetes group) and Wolbachia (α-proteobacteria), estimating incidence, prevalence, any sex bias in infection, and infection diversity, for a panel of field-collected specimens. We identify spiders as a hotspot for Cardinium . Present in 22% of the sampled species, incidence was significantly higher than that previously recorded in insects. Where present, Cardinium infection occurred at medium prevalence without evidence of sex bias in prevalence that would indicate sex-ratio distortion activity. Wolbachia was present in 37% of species, but revealed a gradation from being rare to very common. In one case, Wolbachia was found significantly more commonly in females than males, indicating it may act as a sex-ratio distorter in some species. Breeding work conducted on two species confirmed that Wolbachia and Cardinium were transmitted maternally, which represents the first proof of inheritance of these symbionts in spiders. Overall, this study demonstrates that the majority of spider species are infected with inherited bacteria, and their role in host biology clearly requires determination.  相似文献

Wolbachia和Cardinium均为母系遗传的胞内共生菌, 它们能够通过诱导胞质不亲和(cytoplasmic incompatibility, CI)以调控寄主的生殖。目前, 关于Wolbachia和Cardinium共同对同一寄主进行生殖操控的机制还不清楚。本研究以皮氏叶螨Tetranychus piercei McGregor广州种群为实验材料, 通过杂交实验和荧光原位杂交的方法, 研究Wolbachia和Cardinium单感染和双感染对寄主生殖的影响。结果表明: 单感染Wolbachia诱导较弱的CI, 不亲和组合的未孵化率为17.8%±1.6%。单感染Cardinium及双感染Wolbachia和Cardinium能诱导高强度的CI, 不亲和组合的未孵化率分别为70.3%±1.3%和72.9%±1.2%。同时双感染Wolbachia和Cardinium雌螨的平均产卵量为35.2±1.2, 显著高于单感染和不感染的雌螨的产卵量。Wolbachia 和Cardinium分别诱导以及共同诱导CI的水平与精子形成过程中的感染情况有关。Wolbachia和Cardinium的垂直传播模式结果显示, 在卵的不同发育阶段, Wolbachia和Cardinium主要伴随着营养物质从滋养细胞、 中肠、 输卵管进入发育中的卵。研究结果为进一步了解 Wolbachia和Cardinium的母系遗传机制提供了重要依据。  相似文献

Field monitoring revealed that the infection ratio of the bacterial symbiont Cardinium in the whitefly (Bemisia tabaci MED) was relatively low in northern China. However, the role of this symbiont and the symbiont–whitefly–host plant interaction mechanism are poorly understood. We investigated the influence of Cardinium on the competitiveness of the host whitefly and the physiological interaction between the host plants and host whiteflies. Cardinium-infected whiteflies were displaced by uninfected whiteflies after 5 generations, which showed that Cardinium infection reduced whitefly competitiveness. The defense response genes of cotton significantly decreased under infestation by infected whiteflies compared to uninfected whiteflies. The expression of detoxification metabolism genes, especially the uridine 5ʹ-diphospho-glucuronyltransferase and P450 genes, in infected whiteflies significantly decreased. These results demonstrated that Cardinium could inhibit the defense response of the host plant and decrease the detoxification metabolism ability of the host whitefly. The reduced competitiveness of infected whiteflies may be associated with the inhibition of the whitefly detoxification metabolism by Cardinium, resulting in the reduced performance of infected whiteflies. However, Cardinium infection can suppress plant defenses, which may benefit both infected and uninfected whiteflies when they coexist. This research illustrates the symbiont–whitefly–host plant interaction mechanism and the population dynamics of the whitefly.  相似文献
