The Effects of Hypoxia on Three Sympatric Shark Species: Physiological and Behavioral Responses 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Behavioral and physiological responses to hypoxia were examined in three sympatric species of sharks: bonnethead shark Sphyrna tiburo, blacknose shark, Carcharhinus acronotus, and Florida smoothhound shark, Mustelus norrisi, using closed system respirometry. Sharks were exposed to normoxic and three levels of hypoxic conditions. Under normoxic conditions (5.5–6.4mg l–1), shark routine swimming speed averaged 25.5 and 31.0cm s–1 for obligate ram-ventilating S. tiburo and C. acronotus respectively, and 25.0cm s–1 for buccal-ventilating M. norrisi. Routine oxygen consumption averaged about 234.6 mg O2kg–1h–1 for S. tiburo, 437.2mg O2kg–1h–1 for C. acronotus, and 161.4mg O2 kg–1 h–1 for M. norrisi. For ram-ventilating sharks, mouth gape averaged 1.0cm whereas M. norrisi gillbeats averaged 56.0 beats min–1. Swimming speeds, mouth gape, and oxygen consumption rate of S. tiburo and C. acronotus increased to a maximum of 37–39cm s–1, 2.5–3.0cm and 496 and 599mg O2 kg–1 h–1 under hypoxic conditions (2.5–3.4mg l–1), respectively. M. norrisi decreased swimming speeds to 16cm s–1 and oxygen consumption rate remained similar. Results support the hypothesis that obligate ram-ventilating sharks respond to hypoxia by increasing swimming speed and mouth gape while buccal-ventilating smoothhound sharks reduce activity. 相似文献

This study examined the osmoregulatory status of the euryhaline elasmobranch Carcharhinus leucas acclimated to freshwater (FW) and seawater (SW). Juvenile C. leucas captured in FW (3 mOsm l–1 kg–1) were acclimated to SW (980–1,000 mOsm l–1 kg–1) over 16 days. A FW group was maintained in captivity over a similar time period. In FW, bull sharks were hyper-osmotic regulators, having a plasma osmolarity of 595 mOsm l–1 kg–1. In SW, bull sharks had significantly higher plasma osmolarities (940 mOsm l–1 kg–1) than FW-acclimated animals and were slightly hypo-osmotic to the environment. Plasma Na+, Cl–, K+, Mg2+, Ca2+, urea and trimethylamine oxide (TMAO) concentrations were all significantly higher in bull sharks acclimated to SW, with urea and TMAO showing the greatest increase. Gill, rectal gland, kidney and intestinal tissue were taken from animals acclimated to FW and SW and analysed for maximal Na+/K+-ATPase activity. Na+/K+-ATPase activity in the gills and intestine was less than 1 mmol Pi mg–1 protein h–1 and there was no difference in activity between FW- and SW-acclimated animals. In contrast Na+/K+-ATPase activity in the rectal gland and kidney were significantly higher than gill and intestine and showed significant differences between the FW- and SW-acclimated groups. In FW and SW, rectal gland Na+/K+-ATPase activity was 5.6±0.8 and 9.2±0.6 mmol Pi mg–1 protein h–1, respectively. Na+/K+-ATPase activity in the kidney of FW and SW acclimated animals was 8.4±1.1 and 3.3±1.1 Pi mg–1 protein h–1, respectively. Thus juvenile bull sharks have the osmoregulatory plasticity to acclimate to SW; their preference for the upper reaches of rivers where salinity is low is therefore likely to be for predator avoidance and/or increased food abundance rather than because of a physiological constraint. 相似文献

Inter- and intra-regional variations in vertebrae morphology and growth increment counts (band counts) were analyzed for two carcharhinid shark species, Carcharhinus plumbeus (n = 10) and C. limbatus (n = 11). Five sequential vertebrae were removed from the cervical region, above the branchial chamber and posterior to the chondrocrainium, and thoracic region, below the first dorsal fin. Dorsal–ventral height, medial–lateral breadth, and caudal–cranial length were measured for each sampled vertebra. Results indicate no significant difference in vertebral morphology within a sampled region of the vertebral column. However, a significant difference in vertebral morphology was noted between regions for both shark species, with thoracic vertebrae consistently larger than cervical vertebrae. A sub-set of three vertebrae was taken from each sampled region of each shark for sectioning and counting of growth increments. Analyses of growth increment counts by two readers indicated no significant difference in band counts within and between sampled regions. 相似文献

A novel image analysis‐based technique applied to unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) survey data is described to detect and locate individual free‐ranging sharks within aggregations. The method allows rapid collection of data and quantification of fine‐scale swimming and collective patterns of sharks. We demonstrate the usefulness of this technique in a small‐scale case study exploring the shoaling tendencies of blacktip reef sharks Carcharhinus melanopterus in a large lagoon within Moorea, French Polynesia. Using our approach, we found that C. melanopterus displayed increased alignment with shoal companions when distributed over a sandflat where they are regularly fed for ecotourism purposes as compared with when they shoaled in a deeper adjacent channel. Our case study highlights the potential of a relatively low‐cost method that combines UAV survey data and image analysis to detect differences in shoaling patterns of free‐ranging sharks in shallow habitats. This approach offers an alternative to current techniques commonly used in controlled settings that require time‐consuming post‐processing effort. 相似文献

Acoustic telemetry was used to examine the size of daily activity space, small-scale movement patterns, and water quality
preferences of juvenile bull sharks in the Caloosahatchee River, Florida. Movement pattern analysis included rate of movement,
swimming depth, linearity, direction, tidal influence, diel pattern, and correlation with environmental variables. Manual
tacking occurred before and after a large freshwater influx which divided the sharks into two groups based on movement patterns.
The first group displayed increased rate of movement, distance traveled, and space utilization at night, and movements correlated
with salinity, temperature, and dissolved oxygen. The second group had an increased rate of movement, distance traveled, and
space utilization during the day, and movements correlated with temperature, dissolved oxygen, turbidity and pH. These juvenile
bull sharks displayed distinct diel movement patterns that were influenced by physical factors, which may account for the
distribution of this top-level predator in the Caloosahatchee River. 相似文献

This study shows a range extension for the Australian blacktip shark Carcharhinus tilstoni, which was believed to be restricted to Australia's tropical waters, of >1000 km into temperate waters, revealing its vulnerability to a wider commercial fishery. 相似文献

Twelve microsatellite DNA markers were isolated in the spot‐tail shark (Carcharhinus sorrah) and nine were isolated in Australian black‐tip shark (Carcharhinus tilstoni). These loci plus 18 others developed for sharks from the genera Negaprion, Ginglymostoma, Carcharodon and Isurus were tested for amplification success on four species of Carcharhinus (including C. sorrah and C. tilstoni) and four other species representing three diverse families. Cross‐amplification was most common within families. Five loci were subsequently tested for polymorphism on 50 C. sorrah and 60 C. tilstoni. The number of alleles per locus was two to 24 and the average heterozygosity was 0.54 (range 0.16–0.87) for C. sorrah and 0.64 (range 0.44–0.78) for C. tilstoni. These loci may be useful tools for genetic analyses of the Carcharhinidae. 相似文献

Carcharhinus limbatus has a cosmopolitan distribution and marked genetic structuring, mainly because of its philopatric behavior. However, analysis of this structuring has not previously included South American populations. In the present study, we analyzed a sample of adult individuals collected on the northern coast of Brazil and compared the sequences of the mitochondrial control region with those of populations already genotyped. Relatively high haplotype diversity (12 haplotypes, genetic diversity of 0.796) was observed, similar to that in other populations but with a much larger number of private alleles. In contrast to populations studied previously, which were represented by neonates, the pronounced allelic variability found in the South American individuals may have resulted from migrations from other populations in the region that have yet to be genotyped. This population was also genetically distinct from the other Atlantic populations (Fst > 0.8), probably because of female philopatry, and apparently separated from the northwestern Atlantic group 1.39 million years ago. These findings indicate that the C. limbatus population from northern Brazil is genetically distinct from all other populations and should be considered as a different management unit for the protection of stocks. 相似文献

Many commercially exploited carcharhinid sharks are difficult to identify to species owing to extensive morphological similarities.
This problem is severely exacerbated when it comes to identifying detached shark fins, and the finless and headless shark
carasses typically sold in markets. To assist in the acquisition of urgently needed conservation and management data on shark
catch and trade, we have developed a highly streamlined approach based on multiplex polymerase chain reaction (PCR) that uses
species-specific primers derived from nuclear ribosomal ITS2 sequences to achieve rapid species identification of shark body
parts. Here we demonstrate the utility of this approach for identifying fins and flesh from two globally distributed, morphologically
very similar carcharhinid sharks (Carcharhinus obscurus and Carcharhinus plumbeus) intensively targeted in fisheries worldwide, and often confused for each other even as whole animals. The assay is conducted
in a 4-primer multiplex format that is structured to simultaneously achieve the following efficiency and cost-reduction objectives:
it requires only a single-tube amplification reaction for species diagnosis, it incorporates an internal positive control
to allow detection of false-negative results, and it is novel in that it allows species identification even when DNAs from
two species are combined in the same tube during the PCR reaction. The latter innovation reduces the required effort for screening
a set of unknown samples by 50%. The streamlined approach illustrated here should be amenable for use in a shark conservation
and management context where large numbers of samples typically need to be screened; the approach shown may also provide a
model for a rapid diagnostic method applicable to species identification in general.
