Prolonged food deprivation is known to cause a fall in the core body temperature of homeotherms. In various species of small birds and mammals (body mass up to 2–3 kg), it has been shown that starvation-induced hypothermia is modulated by the circadian system, in the sense that hypothermia is observed primarily during the inactive phase of the daily activity cycle (i.e., during the night for diurnal animals and during the day for nocturnal animals), whereas relatively normal temperatures are recorded during the active phase. To investigate whether this modulation occurs also in larger animals, we investigated the effects of 4d food deprivation on the body temperature rhythm of goats and sheep (body mass 30–40 kg). In goats, the body temperature rhythm was found to have a mean level of 39.0°C with a mean daily range of excursion of 0.42°C. The daily oscillation in body temperature persisted during the first day of fasting, but the rhythm was drastically damped, if not eliminated, over the next 3 d as body temperature descended from the baseline level of 39.0 to 38.2°C. In sheep, the rhythm was found to have a mean level of 39.3°C with a mean daily range of excursion of 0.34°C. The daily oscillation in body temperature persisted through the 4 d of food deprivation, even though the mean level of body temperature gradually fell. Temperature fell more during the third and fourth nights than during the third and fourth days. Thus, circadian modulation of starvation-induced hypothermia was observed in sheep but not in goats. 相似文献

Non-native mammals are major drivers of ecosystem change and biodiversity loss; this is especially apparent on islands. However,
techniques exist to remove non-native mammals, providing a powerful conservation tool. Conservation practitioners are now
targeting larger islands for restoration. Leveraging existing and developing new techniques and technologies will prove critical
to successful eradications on large islands. Using the removal of introduced goats (Capra hircus) from Santiago Island, Galápagos as a case study, we present a suite of Geographic Information System (GIS) tools that aid
island conservation actions. GIS tools were incorporated into the three phases of the eradication campaign: planning, hunting,
and monitoring. Further, these tools were adopted for three eradication techniques: ground-based hunting, aerial hunting by
helicopter, and Judas goats. These geographic approaches provide a foundation for statistical, spatial, and economic analyses
that should increase the capability and efficiency of removal campaigns. Given limited conservation funds and the dire status
of many insular species, efficiently removing non-native mammals from islands is of paramount global conservation importance. 相似文献

The polymorphism in follicle stimulating hormone beta (FSHB) subunit gene was detected by PCR-SSCP and PCR-RFLP methods in 780 does from four goat breeds including Boer, Matou, Black and Boer-Matou crossbred (BM). The associations of FSHB genotypes with litter size (LS), litter weight at birth (LWB) and gestation length (GL) as well as superovulation performances were analyzed in relatively lower-prolific Boer and higher-prolific Matou breeds. A 1514 bp linear DNA sequence of goat FSHB gene covering the complete 3 exons was cloned by four pairs of primer. A new mutation (A2645G, GenBank Accession no: S64745) locating in exon 3 causing an amino acid change from glutamine (Gln) to arginine (Arg) at residue 115 was identified, which resulted in three genotypes named AA, AB and BB. The three genotypes were detected in the four studied goat breeds. The higher-prolific Matou breed had the highest frequency of genotype AA. Association analysis showed that Boer and Matou does with AA genotype have the largest LS both in average and in parities from first to fourth (P < 0.05). Furthermore, Boer does with AA genotype had the heaviest LWB compared to other two genotypes (P < 0.05). Matou does with AA genotype have more numbers of ova harvested, large follicles and corpus lutea on ovaries after superovulation than those with BB genotype (P < 0.05). Therefore, these results suggest that the FSHB gene is a candidate gene that affects reproduction traits in goats. 相似文献

We investigated whether sexual segregation might affect parasite transmission and host dynamics, hypothesising that if males are the more heavily infected sex and more responsible for the transmission of parasite infections, female avoidance of males and the space they occupy could reduce infection rates. A mathematical model, simulating the interaction between abomasal parasites and a hypothetical alpine ibex (Capraibex) host population composed of its two sexes, was developed to predict the effect of different degrees of sexual segregation on parasite intensity and on host abundance. The results showed that when females tended to be segregated from males, and males were distributed randomly across space, the impact of parasites was the lowest, resulting in the highest host abundance, with each sex having the lowest parasite intensity. The predicted condition that minimises the impact of parasites in our model was the one closest to that observed in nature where females actively seek out the more segregated sites while males are less selective in their ranging behaviour. The overlapping of field observation with the predicted optimal strategy lends support to our idea that there might be a connection between parasite transmission and sexual segregation. Our simulations provide the biological boundaries of host-parasite interaction needed to determine a parasite-mediated effect on sexual segregation and a formalised null hypothesis against which to test future field experiments. 相似文献

The history and species status of free-ranging goats inhabiting the Eastern Mediterranean islands is discussed with reference to morphometric, archaeological and genetic findings. A case study on the free-ranging goats on Crete (Capra aegagrus cretica) is presented. The phenotype of the Cretan goat resembles that of the wild bezoar goat (C. aegagrus). However, the mitochondrial DNA of cytochrome b and d-loop sequences shows affinity with domestic goats. It has been suggested that the Cretan goat represents a feral animal that was introduced onto the island during the 6th millennium b.c. as a primitive domestic, and has retained the wild morphotype but has undergone significant genetic change. An alternative explanation, and the one that is proposed here, is that the goat was introduced onto the island in wild form and released as a food source. Subsequent introgressions with domestic animals, especially ewes, have influenced its genotype. These conclusions are applicable to other free-living goats and sheep which inhabit islands in the Eastern Mediterranean. 相似文献

The genus Borderea consists of two species, B. pyrenaica and B. chouardii, taxa which have been previously considered as conspecific due to their overall close morphology. These two sole species of the rare genus of Dioscoreaceae are endemic to the Pyrenees (Spain, France). This mountain range likely operated as a refugium for these plants during the last glaciations. B. chouardii is only known from a single population in the Spanish Prepyrenees and has been classified as at risk of extinction in the Red List of Endangered Species (IUCN); B. pyrenaica shows a narrow distribution range in the central Pyrenees and Prepyrenees. We analysed genetic variation, population structure and differentiation in these two taxa using RAPD markers. Our study was conducted on the same seven populations for which very low levels of genetic differentiation were detected previously through allozyme analysis. By contrast, high levels of genetic variability were detected through the RAPD hypervariable markers. Twelve RAPD primers produced 112 distinct bands in the 397 surveyed individuals, totalling 395 different RAPD phenotypes. Only four bands were monomorphic across all samples of Borderea, whereas 21 of the polymorphic bands were species‐specific (20 for B. chouardii, and one for B. pyrenaica). The largest genetic distances were those between the B. chouardii and the B. pyrenaica phenotypes. An analysis of molecular variance showed greater variance between groups (B. chouardii vs. B. pyrenaica, 76.08%) than within groups (3.60%). RAPD band specificity, phenotypic distances, and the partitioning of variance all support the taxonomic separation of the two species. Statistical evaluation of within‐ and among‐population RAPD genetic variability in B. pyrenaica showed that genetic variability was higher within populations (>80%) than among them. No clear pattern of RAPD differentiation could be observed among the six studied populations of this taxon though slight differences in genetic diversity could be observed in the more isolated Prepyrenean populations compared with the more widespread Pyrenean ones. These results suggest a recent postglacial origin of the present B. pyrenaica populations. © 2003 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society, 2003, 80 , 483–498. 相似文献

Two alleles, A and B, were previously described at the goat αs2-casein locus. Isoelectric focusing allowed us to subdivide the former one in two new alleles, called A and C. Although αs2-casein C cannot actually be distinguished from its A counterpart by starch or polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis, it differs from the previous allele by a single substitution Lys (A)/Ile (C) at position 167, which was confirmed at the nucleotide level. The frequencies of the three αs2-casein alleles A, B and C were estimated to be 0.85, 0.04 and 0.11 in the French dairy breeds ‘Alpine’ and ‘Saanen’. 相似文献
