Diverse animals exhibit left-right asymmetry in development. However, no example of dimorphism for the left-right polarity of development (whole-body enantiomorphy) is known to persist within natural populations. In snails, whole-body enantiomorphs have repeatedly evolved as separate species. Within populations, however, snails are not expected to exhibit enantiomorphy, because of selection against the less common morph resulting from mating disadvantage. Here we present a unique example of evolutionarily stable whole-body enantiomorphy in snails. Our molecular phylogeny of South-east Asian tree snails in the genus Amphidromus indicates that enantiomorphy has likely persisted as the ancestral state over a million generations. Enantiomorphs have continuously coexisted in every population surveyed spanning a period of 10 years. Our results indicate that whole-body enantiomorphy is maintained within populations opposing the rule of directional asymmetry in animals. This study implicates the need for explicit approaches to disclosure of a maintenance mechanism and conservation of the genus.  相似文献

From an analysis of over 900 specimens of camaenid land snails, we have assembled a molecular phylogeny of 327 tips covering > 70% genera across the entire continent of Australia and including > 90% of eastern species. Our approach emphasizes sampling to identify lineage flocks from populations down to build a hierarchical gene‐by‐taxa tapestry or supermatrix dataset using three mitochondrial genes, then analysed with Markov chain Monte Carlo and fast maximum likelihood methods. Similarity amongst taxa set results suggests missing data cause only minor distortions. This is supplemented by a separate higher level 28S rDNA phylogeny for a global scale perspective. The shallow divergence of Australasian forms, and their nesting within South‐East Asian groups within the Helicoidea supergroup extending from Europe to North America, is consistent with the Solem hypothesis of Laurasian immigration of c. Miocene origin, and so being more than 400 species in 80‐plus genera spread across the continent of Australia from rainforest to desert, forms an immense radiation. There is a major distinction between eastern and western lineages, with some key exceptions. Finer scale patterns of relictual endemics indicate that many ancestral lineages were in place before the major decline and breakup of the Tertiary mesic forest realm that once dominated Gondwanan Australia, and so chart the phylogenetic turnover of ecosystem change from mesic to xeric. The various higher classification schemes proposed all founder on the sheer scale of this radiation. Of 30 polytypic genera tested, at least 18 are not monophyletic, highlighting (1) the repeated radiation of shell forms, and (2) that the current higher taxonomy is unacceptable. Here we provide a phylogenetic and biogeographically condign arrangement as the basis for future elaborations. © 2011 The Linnean Society of London, Zoological Journal of the Linnean Society, 2011, 161 , 531–572.  相似文献

Camaenid land snails are often the focus of targeted biodiversity surveys in Australia, but can be difficult to locate because they hibernate for most of the year. Searches would be more effective if the density of live snails could be predicted from features of the habitat, or from the abundance of empty shells from long dead individuals. In 53 populations of Rhagada, the dominant genus of land snail in the Pilbara bioregion of Western Australia, the density of live snails is not correlated with the cover or height of spinifex (Triodia), the main habitat plant occupied by Rhagada. On the other hand, the density of empty shells on the soil surface does explain snail population density, but the relationship is weak (r2=0.209). Nevertheless, the data suggest that searches for live Rhagada are more likely to succeed in areas where empty shells are most abundant.  相似文献

The present study deals with four Chinese camaenid species based on museum collections and newly obtained materials. Pseudiberus liuae Wu, n. sp., diagnosed by two long mucous glands and the smallest shell size in the genus and inhabiting bare rock like other congeneric members, is described from southern Gansu. Aegista (Plectotropis) wardi (Preston, 1912) is conchologically re-described and moved out of Aegista Alber, 1860 to Pseudiberus Ancey, 1887 based on the keeled periphery and the absence of hairs, scales or their scars on the teleoconch, which are present in Aegista but partially absent in Pseudiberus. The first Chinese fluorescent snail Bradybaena qixiaensis Wu & Asami n. sp. is reported from Nanjing, Jiangsu. The species shares many characters with the Japanese fluorescent snail Bradybaena pellucida Kuroda & Habe, 1953 but is distinct in the pattern of microsculpture on the internal surface of the penis. Nesiohelix yeni Wu & Asami n. sp., sympatric with N. moreletiana (Heude, 1882), is distinguished from its congener by possession of a bubble-shaped penial caecum.
