Annual monitoring of the apron Zingel asper in the Durance River, a tributary of the Rhône in which the fish is endemic, indicated its narrow diet range. Three types of prey made up the basic diet: Diptera (Simulidae and Chironomidae), mainly in winter, and Ephemeroptera (Baetidae) and Trichoptera (Hydropsychidae), during the rest of the year. Although some potential prey (Coleoptera and Gammaridae) were present in the substratum, they were not found in the stomach contents of the apron. In spring specific food items (Heptageneidae) appeared to be actively searched for as indicated by stomach contents. This period coincided with the renewal of growth. More than 80% of the annual occurred before the beginning of autumn. 相似文献

According to theories on cave adaptation, cave organisms are expected to develop a lower metabolic rate compared to surface organisms as an adaptation to food scarcity in the subterranean environments. To test this hypothesis, we compared the oxygen consumption rates of the surface and subterranean populations of a surface‐dwelling species, the newt Calotriton asper, occasionally found in caves. In this study, we designed a new experimental setup in which animals with free movement were monitored for several days in a respirometer. First, we measured the metabolic rates of individuals from the surface and subterranean populations, both maintained for eight years in captivity in a natural cave. We then tested individuals from these populations immediately after they were caught and one year later while being maintained in the cave. We found that the surface individuals that acclimated to the cave significantly reduced their oxygen consumption, whereas individuals from the subterranean population maintained in the cave under a light/dark cycle did not significantly modify their metabolic rates. Second, we compared these metabolic rates to those of an obligate subterranean salamander (Proteus anguinus), a surface aquatic Urodel (Ambystoma mexicanum), and a fish species (Gobio occitaniae) as references for surface organisms from different phyla. As predicted, we found differences between the subterranean and surface species, and the metabolic rates of surface and subterranean C. asper populations were between those of the obligate subterranean and surface species. These results suggest that the plasticity of the metabolism observed in surface C. asper was neither directly due to food availability in our experiments nor the light/dark conditions, but due to static temperatures. Moreover, we suggest that this adjustment of the metabolic level at a temperature close to the thermal optimum may further allow individual species to cope with the food limitations of the subterranean environment. 相似文献

Predation can promote divergence between prey populations and contribute to ecological speciation. In theory, predators can also constrain prey population divergence. In coastal British Columbia, Canada, Gasterosteus aculeatus (three‐spined stickleback) species pairs only occur in lakes with a single species of predatory fish: Oncorhynchus clarkii (the cutthroat trout). Similar lakes containing additional predatory fish species (Cottus asper, prickly sculpins; Oncorhynchus mykiss, rainbow trout) contain only single species of morphologically intermediate stickleback, suggesting that these predators prevent the coexistence of stickleback species pairs. We conducted a mesocosm experiment to investigate how prickly sculpins might constrain divergence, by quantifying their impact on survival and natural selection on antipredator (armour) traits in F2 stickleback from a cross between ecologically divergent populations. We tested three hypotheses: (1) sculpin predation on sticklebacks reduces survival in a way that could result in their exclusion from certain niches; (2) sculpins compete with stickleback; (3) sculpins respond to prey vulnerabilities in similar ways to cutthroat trout, tending to constrain rather than to enhance divergence. We found that sculpins significantly reduce stickleback survival, that their presence per se does not reduce growth in stickleback, and that predation did not result in selection on any of the armour traits measured, or on gill raker length, which is an important trophic trait. An efficient and reproducible procedure for the large-scale propagation of Dendrocalamus asper is described. High-frequency direct shoot proliferation was induced in aseptic seed cultures of D. asper on modified Murashige and Skoog's (1962) medium supplemented with 1.0–10.0 mg/l benzyladenine (BA). Multiple shoots (1–25)
were formed within 5 weeks of seed culture without root formation. The shoot-forming capacity of seeds was influenced by the
BA concentration in the medium. Proliferating shoot cultures were established by repeatedly subculturing shoots in propagules
of 3 shoots each. A multiplication rate of 15–16 fold was achieved on MS medium +3.0 mg/l BA. Roots were formed on excised
propagules of 3–5 shoots when transferred to MS medium containing 10.0 mg/l indole-3-butyric acid (IBA) or 3.0 mg/l 1-naphthaleneacetic
acid (NAA). Plantlets were hardened, acclimatized and established in soil, where they exhibited normal growth.

Historical factors (colonization scenarios, demographic oscillations) and contemporary processes (population connectivity, current population size) largely contribute to shaping species’ present‐day genetic diversity and structure. In this study, we use a combination of mitochondrial and nuclear DNA markers to understand the role of Quaternary climatic oscillations and present‐day gene flow dynamics in determining the genetic diversity and structure of the newt Calotriton asper (Al. Dugès, 1852), endemic to the Pyrenees. Mitochondrial DNA did not show a clear phylogeographic pattern and presented low levels of variation. In contrast, microsatellites revealed five major genetic lineages with admixture patterns at their boundaries. Approximate Bayesian computation analyses and linear models indicated that the five lineages likely underwent separate evolutionary histories and can be tracked back to distinct glacial refugia. Lineage differentiation started around the Last Glacial Maximum at three focal areas (western, central and eastern Pyrenees) and extended through the end of the Last Glacial Period in the central Pyrenees, where it led to the formation of two more lineages. Our data revealed no evidence of recent dispersal between lineages, whereas borders likely represent zones of secondary contact following expansion from multiple refugia. Finally, we did not find genetic evidence of sex‐biased dispersal. This work highlights the importance of integrating past evolutionary processes and present‐day gene flow and dispersal dynamics, together with multilocus approaches, to gain insights into what shaped the current genetic attributes of amphibians living in montane habitats. 相似文献

Intraguild predation is a common ecological interaction that occurs when a species preys upon another species with which it competes. The interaction is potentially a mechanism of divergence between intraguild prey (IG‐prey) populations, but it is unknown if cases of character shifts in IG‐prey are an environmental or evolutionary response. We investigated the genetic basis and inducibility of character shifts in threespine stickleback from lakes with and without prickly sculpin, a benthic intraguild predator (IG‐predator). Wild populations of stickleback sympatric with sculpin repeatedly show greater defensive armor and water column height preference. We laboratory‐raised stickleback from lakes with and without sculpin, as well as marine stickleback, and found that differences between populations in armor, body shape, and behavior persisted in a common garden. Within the common garden, we raised stickleback half‐families from multiple populations in the presence and absence of sculpin. Although the presence of sculpin induced trait changes in the marine stickleback, we did not observe an induced response in the freshwater stickleback. Behavioral and morphological trait differences between freshwater populations thus have a genetic basis and suggest an evolutionary response to intraguild predation. 相似文献

目的:研究五鹤续断(WHDA)注射液对D-半乳糖所致小鼠衰老模型的抗衰老作用及其机制。方法:昆明种小鼠(雌雄各半)48只,随机分为对照组、模型组、阳性WHDA组、7.2g/kgWnDA组、3.6g/kgWHDA组及1.8g/kgWHDA组,每组8只。腹腔注射D-半乳糖造模,Morris水迷宫测量小鼠学习和记忆能力。检测各组小鼠皮肤羟脯氨酸、脑组织MDA、LP、SOD及GSH-Px含量,采用双抗体夹心ELISA法检测小鼠血清中IL-2及IL-6含量。结果:Morris水迷宫实验结果表明WHDA各组潜伏期与模型组相比较明显减少(P〈0.05),模型组小鼠穿越平台的次数比其它各组小鼠少(P〈0.05)。脑组织氧化性指标(SOD、MAD、LP及GSH.Px)检测,对照组及WHDA各组MAD与LP含量低于模型组(P〈0.05)。对照组及WHDA各组SOD与GSH-Px的活性明显高于模型组(P〈0.05)。注射过D-半乳糖小鼠皮肤羟脯氨酸含量都明显低于对照组(P〈0.05),WHDA组小鼠皮肤中羟脯氨酸的含量明显高于模型组(P〈0.05)。WHDA组小鼠血清中IL-2、IL-6含量显著高于对照组和模型组(P〈0.05),模型组小鼠血清中的IL-2、IL-6比对照组要低(P〈0.05)。结论:WHDA能改善D.半乳糖所致的衰老小鼠的学习记忆能力,消除其体内自由基,增强机体免疫能力,具有较好的抗衰老作用。 相似文献

The need for a healthy diet and a renewed interest towards the rediscovery of old culinary traditions has determined a new attention to alimurgic plants. The aim of this work was to evaluate chemical and biological variability in relation to harvest time and site of collection of three wild edible Cichorioideae (Asteraceae) belonging to Calabrian folk tradition: Cichorium intybus L., Sonchus asper L. and Picris hieracioides L. Twelve hydroalcoholic extracts were prepared and evaluated for their total phenolic and flavonoid content. In vitro biological activity was assessed by means of DPPH and β-carotene bleaching test. The abundance of phenolics was significantly affected by the month of collection, being samples collected on November richer in phenolic compounds, and by the site of collection, as samples from lower altitude showed the highest content. The same samples showed also the highest radical scavenging activity. Also the ability to inhibit lipid peroxidation was influenced, being samples collected at lower altitude in November the most active ones. Within the framework of a valorisation of wild edible plant species, this work evidenced that harvest time and site of collection significantly affected phytochemical content and biological activity of investigated species. 相似文献
