Promiscuous mating systems provide the opportunity for females to bias fertilization toward particular males. However, distinguishing between male sperm competition and active female sperm choice is difficult for species with internal fertilization. Nevertheless, species that store and use sperm of different males in different storing structures and species where females are able to expel all or part of the ejaculates after copulation may be able to bias fertilization. We report a series of experiments aimed at providing evidence of female sperm choice in Euxesta eluta (Hendel), a species of ulidiid fly that expels and consumes ejaculates after copulation. We found no evidence of greater reproductive success for females mated singly, multiply with the same male, or mated multiply with different males. Female E. eluta possesses two spherical spermathecae and a bursa copulatrix for sperm storage, with a ventral receptacle. There was no significant difference in storing more sperm in spermathecae 24 h after copulation than immediately after copulation. Females mated with protein-fed males had greater reproductive success than similar females mated to protein-deprived males. Protein-fed females prevented to consume the ejaculate, retained more sperm when mated to protein-fed males than when mated to protein-deprived males. Our results suggest that female E. eluta can exert control of sperm retention of higher quality males through ejaculate ejection.  相似文献

Previous in vitro research from our laboratory has demonstrated the existence of a protein purified from the chicken bursa of Fabricius, with potent antisteroidogenic and antiproliferative action on granulose cells and lymphocytes, respectively called Bursal anti-steroidogenic peptide (BASP). This protein is heat-labile, basic, and amino- and carboxy-terminus blocked. In highly purified form, the protein presents as a doublet on SDS-PAGE electrophoresis with an apparent MW of approximately 29 and approximately 32 kDa. Recently, Nanoflow Q-TOF Mass Spectrometry amino acid sequencing allowed determination of a convincing partial amino acid sequence, strongly suggesting a probable relationship of BASP with histone H1. Bursal cDNA expression library screening, using an antibody produced against BASP, also identified a clone with a sequence matching histone H1. Presently, we have demonstrated that SDS-PAGE electrophoresis of highly purified and bioactive BASP, and commercially-available calf thymus derived histone H1, produced similar doublets at approximately the same apparent MW, and that the electrophoretic profile of these 2 preparations were strikingly similar following 2 dimensional gel electrophoresis. The BASP doublet produced on SDS-PAGE was recognized by a commercially available monoclonal antibody recognizing a highly conserved region of histone H1. Furthermore, calf thymus histone H1 was found to suppress mitogen-stimulated chicken B-cell proliferation in a concentration-related manner, similar to the action of BASP. These data indicate that BASP shares substantial structural homology with, and may be identical to, histone H1.  相似文献

研究LY株禽呼肠孤病毒(ARV)感染1日龄SPF鸡后对法氏囊发育影响,对传染性法氏囊病毒(IBDV)、禽流感病毒(AIV)、新城疫病毒(NDV)疫苗免疫诱发的抗体的影响,及对强毒株IBDV致病作用的影响。结果表明,LY株ARV感染1日龄SPF鸡可引起法氏囊萎缩和部分淋巴细胞减少,但对增重及AIV和NDV疫苗免疫后抗体滴度却没有显著影响。ARV感染可降低弱毒IBDV疫苗免疫后的抗体反应,但对随后IBDV强毒株攻毒的抵抗力却与对照鸡无显著差异。经IBDV弱毒疫苗免疫后,再接种强毒株IBDV,不会引起死亡,但却仍能显著抑制对AIV、NDV疫苗免疫后的抗体滴度。然而,对于1~7日龄经ARV感染的鸡,IBDV强毒的这种免疫抑制作用又显著低于未经ARV感染的对照鸡。  相似文献

Zusammenfassung Die Bursae Fabricii von Hühnern im Alter von 1 Tag bis zu 1 Jahr werden histologisch untersucht. Dabei sind nach dem histologischen Bild Postembryonal-, Ausreifungs-, Reife-, frühes und spätes Involutions- sowie Reliktstadium zu unterscheiden. Postembryonal-, Ausreifungs- und Reifestadium weichen im wesentlichen hinsichtlich Gesamtgröße, Follikelgröße und Zellzusammensetzung voneinander ab. Die Involution kann im Alter von 14 Wochen bis 5 Monaten beginnen. Während der Involution verschmelzen die Bursafalten, das Lumen verschwindet. Die Bursafollikel verlieren an der Lumenseite zunächst die Rinde, dann das Mark. Die Restfollikel lagern sich zusammen und werden nekrotisch, ein Teil bildet Zysten. Als Reliktstadien finden sich bis zum Alter von 1 Jahr fibrotische, muskel- und gefäßreiche Gebilde, die Bursafollikel, Keimzentren oder Lymphozytenhäufchen enthalten.
Post-hatching development and involution of the bursa Fabricii in the chicken (Gallus domesticus)
Summary Bursae Fabricii were histologically examined in chickens 1 day to 1 year old. They were divided into 6 stages based on their histological appearance: the post-hatching, maturation, maturity, early involution, late involution, and residual stages. The post-hatching, maturation, and maturity stages differ with regard to bursal size, follicle size, and cellular composition. Involution may begin at 14 weeks to five months of age. During the course of involution, the bursal plicae grow together and the bursal cavity disappears. Near the luminal surface epithelium, the bursal follicles at first lose their cortex and then later their medulla. The remnant follicles join and undergo regressive and cystic changes. Residual stages are present up to 1 year of age; they are composed of fibrous connective tissue with smooth muscle and blood vessels and contain single bursal follicles, germinal centers, or lymphatic nodules.

1. Glutathione peroxidase activity and serum malondialdehyde of heat-stressed broilers were increased in the early period of heat exposure, and then these parameters decreased.
2. The lesion scores of bursa of Fabricius in heat-stressed broilers were increased and decreased in accordance with the activity of glutathione peroxidase and serum malondialdehyde.
3. High environmental temperature had not affected relative bursa of Fabricius weight and NDV-HI titer of heat-stressed broilers.
4. We concluded that heat-stressed broilers could adapt to oxidative stress, and environmental temperature set at 38±2 °C had not affected humoral immunity.

The sterile insect technique (SIT) potentially provides a socially acceptable approach for insect eradication of new pest incursions. The light brown apple moth, Epiphyas postvittana (Walker) (Lepidoptera: Tortricidae), was discovered in Berkeley (CA, USA) in 2006, leading to an incursion response that included this technology. In this study, we assessed factors affecting mating success from a bisex release of irradiated moths: effects of radiation dose on male multiple mating, male flight competition, female sex pheromone titre and attractiveness of irradiated females to males, and identification of successful mating in vineyards of either irradiated or wild males (identified by isotope analysis of spermatophores from sentinel females). There was a significant negative relationship between male radiation dose and mating frequency. In head‐to‐head flights of irradiated males against non‐irradiated males to a pheromone lure in a wind tunnel, irradiated males reached the lure first only 31% of the time. With increasing radiation dose, the production of the major sex pheromone component in females, (E)‐11‐tetradecenyl acetate, dropped, from 0.7 ± 0.1 ng per female in non‐irradiated females to 0.2 ± 0.07 ng per female when irradiated at 300 Gy. Male catch was reduced to 11% of control females in traps containing females irradiated at 300 Gy. Isotope analysis of spermatophores found in the bursa copulatrix of females indicated that mating success of irradiated males inside the live (entry‐only) traps containing virgin females was lower (13.1 ± 3.3%) than suggested by male catch (21.2 ± 3.8%) in pheromone traps, the current standard for assessing field competitiveness. Impacts of irradiation on male and female moth fitness should be taken into account to improve estimates of irradiated to wild male E. postvittana overflooding ratios needed for population suppression.  相似文献

Pollen collected by honeybees foraging in the region of Bursa, Turkey was analysed for a whole year. Pollen loads were collected from the hives of Apis mellifera anatoliaca once a week and were classified by colour. Forty‐one taxa were identified from the pollen analyses of the loads and 14 of these had percentages higher than 1%. Only 2.05% of the total pollen could not have been identified. Dominant taxa include; Brassicaceae (11.19%), Helianthus annuus L. (10.84%), Cichorioideae (8.93%) Salix spp. (7.99%), Rosaceae (7.37%), Centaurea spp. (7.56%), Papaver spp. (7.41%), Knautia spp. (6.99%), Fabaceae (6.01%), Asteraceae (5.73%), Xanthium spp. (2.65%), Chrozophora spp. (2.45%), Plantago spp. (1.56%) and Acer spp. (1.54%) representing 88.23% of the total. Distinct variations in plant usage are seen through the year with initial use of Rosaceae, Salix, and to a lesser extent Brassicaeae. As these groups finish flowering the bees move onto Helianthus annuus, Centaurea through the summer followed by Asteraceae in the late summer and Fabaceae in the autumn. There is a strong reliance on crop species for pollen forage but a number of indigenous species are also seen within the samples. The most productive period for collecting various pollen types, and the ideal period to determine pollen preferences of honey bees was June‐August.  相似文献

Mating in the redbanded leafroller moth, Argyrotaenia velutinana, causes a permanent decline in pheromone titers. Three hours following the termination of mating, phermone titers were significantly decreased from premating levels, and titers remained low for at least four days after mating. Pheromone titers were similar in females that had been decapitated or mated for twenty-four hours. In the redbanded leafroller moth, two peptides control pheromone production. The pheromone biosynthesis activating neuropeptide is produced in the brain and the pheromonotropic bursa peptide is produced in the corpus bursae. Both peptides stimulated pheromone biosynthesis in mated females and extracts prepared from brains and bursae of mated females contained pheromonotropic activity. However, severing the ventral nerve cord before mating prevented the decline in pheromone titer that occurred in mated females. Hemolymph collected during scotophase from mated females did not have pheromonotropic activity, whereas hemolymph collected during scotophase from virgin females contained activity. These results indicate that mating produces a signal sent by the ventral nerve cord to the brain to stop the release of pheromone biosynthesis activating neuropeptide. © 1993 Wiley-Liss, Inc.  相似文献

Summary A pair of multipolar stretch-receptive neurons were found in the bursa copulatrix of the female cabbage white butterfly, Pieris rapae crucivora. The cell body of each neuron, about 10 m in diameter, lies on the edge of the muscular region in the antero-lateral wall of the corpus bursae. No special accessory structure, such as a receptor muscle, is associated with the neuron. The several dendrites extend radially into the muscle layer. The dendrites are ensheathed except for their terminal tips, and, on their course, they anchor repeatedly on the epithelial cells or the muscle fibers in such a manner that their basement membranes fuse together. While the ensheathed dendrite is usually 0.1–0.2 m in diameter, it often forms 1–2 m varicosities especially at anchor sites, so that it looks like a varicose, or beaded, chain. The varicosities contain a number of mitochondria, but only microtubules are found in the fine interconnecting parts of the dendrite. The naked dendritic tips terminate in the basement membrane of the epithelial cell. The varicosities, as well as naked tips, seem to be important for stimulus transduction in the sensory cell of this type.  相似文献

The regulation of post-mating decline of sex-pheromone in the gypsy moth, Lymantria dispar, was studied. An initial, transient suppression of pheromone production was found to be caused by the introduction of male genitalia into the bursa copulatrix, which results in mechanical pressure being transmitted via innervation of the bursa. However, if sperm was not transferred during mating, pheromone production resumed and females returned to calling behavior. Permanent suppression of pheromone production resulted from an adequate supply of sperm in the spermatheca and could be prevented in females from which spermatheca was removed. During the initial period of suppression of pheromone production females were sexually receptive and could remate. They became nonreceptive only when pheromone production was terminated and oviposition begun.  相似文献
