Summary Evaluation of formaldehyde and fifteen biocides in formaldehyde sensitive (S) and resistant (R) strains ofPseudomonas aeruginosa revealed a pattern of response that allowed a comparison of the mode of action of these biocides. The response of these strains to the various biocides, as well as the induction of transient resistance or cross-resistance in the (S) strain, allowed a grouping of biocides based on this pattern of response. Group 1 biocides acted in a manner indistinguishable from formaldehyde for both the (S) and (R) strains. Group 2 biocides were not effective against either the (S) or (R) strains at concentrations calculated to release equimolar concentrations of formaldehyde. However, treatment of the (S) strain with formaldehyde or Group 2 biocides resulted in the development of cross-resistance. Group 3 biocides were equally effective against the (S) and (R) strain, but the (S) strain survivors of treatment with Group 3 biocides were resistant to formaldehyde. Group 4 biocides (controls) had no presumed connection to formaldehyde mode of action. These four groupings, based on pattern of response, also resulted in groupings of biocides based on chemical structure.

Essential oils of fennel, peppermint, caraway, eucalyptus, geranium and lemon were tested for their antimicrobial activities against some plant pathogenic micro-organisms (Fusarium oxysporum, Alternaria alternate, Penicilium italicum Penicilium digitatum and Botyritus cinerea). Essential oils of fennel, peppermint, caraway were selected as an active ingredient for the formulation of biocides due to their efficiency in controlling the tested micro-organisms. Successful emulsifiable concentrates (biocides) were prepared from these oils using different emulsifiers (Emulgator B.L.M. Tween20 and Tween80) and different fixed oils (sesame, olive, cotton and soybean oils). Physico-chemical properties of the formulated biocide (spontaneous emulsification, emulsion stability test, cold stability and heat stability tests as well as viscosity, surface tension and pH) were measured. The prepared biocides were ready to be tested for application in a future work as a safe pesticide against different pathogens.

Changes in microbial biomass and activity were determined in a sandy-loam soil treated with successive dosages of oxytetracycline
(a bactericide) or captan (a fungicide) throughout 98 days of incubation under laboratory conditions. The numbers of culturable
bacteria and fungi, total bacterial and fungal biomass (as amounts of phospholipid fatty acids, PLFA), the fungal/bacterial
ratio, activities of acid and alkaline phosphatases and urease as well as concentrations of N-NH4
+ and N-NO3
− were assessed. Both oxytetracycline and captan significantly decreased numbers of culturable bacteria whereas total bacterial
biomass (bactPLFA) was not affected. Oxytetracycline did not effect on the fungal biomass, however their numbers were reduced
after the first and second time of soil amendment with the bactericide. Conversely, fungal numbers and biomass (PLFA 18:2ω6,9)
significantly decreased in response to soil treatment with the fungicide. Compared to oxytetracycline, captan significantly
decreased activities of acid and alkaline phosphatases. For urease activity, the decreased activity was only observed in the
soil after the third dosage of captan. Both biocides significantly increased concentrations of N-NH4
+ and decreased concentrations of N-NO3
− after the soil treatments. The results of this study indicate that successive soil treatment with oxytetracycline or captan
dosages may negatively affect non-target soil microorganisms and their activities.

The morphology, and the number and concentration of thiophene-like compounds were studied in leaves, roots and calli of Tagetes species grown with different nutrient solutions. The type of nutrient solution exerted no effect on the number of thiophene-like compounds, but altered the type of morphological differentiation and thiophene content of calli. Calli of T. minuta L. showed little differentiation and resulted in suspensible callus after two passages. Calli of T. erecta L. cv. Rose d'Inde differentiated rapidly and turned dark brown after one passage. The morphology of calli from T. patula L. cv. Nana furia was intermediate. Tertiary callus of T. patula contained more thiophene-like compounds and higher concentrations than did the corresponding calli of T. minuta . The content of thiophene-like compounds decreased after various callus passages, but the relative decrease varied between species.

1,2,3-Benzothiazole-7-thiocarboxylic acid-S-methylester (commercially known as Actigard® AM-87) was utilized to impart cotton fabric durable antimicrobial properties. Finishing treatment was carried out under a variety of conditions. The latter were included, effect of pH, concentration of antibacterial agents, curing temperature and curing time. The effect of fabric construction, mercerization, and dyeing with different dyestuff were also investigated. The study was also extended to investigate the technical feasibility of combining antimicrobial finishing treatment in question with other finishing treatment generally carried out on cotton fabric, like soft finishing and crease recovery finishing. The treated fabrics were monitored for antimicrobial properties before and after washing. The treated fabrics were also evaluated for the physio-mechanical properties like fabric tensile strength, elongation at break (or bursting strength for knitted fabric), wettability, crease recovery angle, whiteness index and roughness. Results obtained show that, the most appropriate conditions for treatment cotton fabric with Actigard® are: padding the cotton fabric in aqueous solution containing 6% Actigard® at pH 5 (adjusted using formic acid) then squeezed to wet pick up of 100%, dried at 80 °C for 5 min then cured at 100 °C for 150 s. The untreated cotton fabric did not show any antimicrobial activity towards Staphylococcus aureus or Escherichia coli. Treatment of cotton fabric with Actigard® improves its antimicrobial properties towards S. aureus or E. coli. It is also observed that, treatment of cotton fabric with Actigard® marginally decreases fabric tensile strength, elongation at break, roughness and WI, whereas; both wettability and crease recovery angle remain practically intact. This was observed whether the fabric was pre-mercerized or not.

Cyanobacteria are considered to be a rich source of novel metabolites of a great importance from a biotechnological and industrial point of view. Some cyanobacterial secondary metabolites (CSMs), exhibit toxic effects on living organisms. A diverse range of these cyanotoxins may have ecological roles as allelochemicals, and could be employed for the commercial development of compounds with applications such as algaecides, herbicides and insecticides. Recently, cyanobacteria have become an attractive source of innovative classes of pharmacologically active compounds showing interesting and exciting biological activities ranging from antibiotics, immunosuppressant, and anticancer, antiviral, antiinflammatory to proteinase-inhibiting agents. A different but not less interesting property of these microorganisms is their capacity of overcoming the toxicity of ultraviolet radiation (UVR) by means of UV-absorbing/screening compounds, such as mycosporine-like amino acids (MAAs) and scytonemin. These last two compounds are true ‘multipurpose’ secondary metabolites and considered to be natural photoprotectants. In this sense, they may be biotechnologically exploited by the cosmetic industry. Overall CSMs are striking targets in biotechnology and biomedical research, because of their potential applications in agriculture, industry, and especially in pharmaceuticals.

This review article discusses the use of nanotechnology in combination with botanical insecticides in order to develop systems for pest control in agriculture. The main types of botanical insecticides are described, together with different carrier systems and their potential uses. The botanical insecticides include those based on active principles isolated from plant extracts, as well as essential oils derived from certain plants. The advantages offered by the systems are highlighted, together with the main technological challenges that must be resolved prior to future implementation of the systems for agricultural pest control. The use of botanical insecticides associated with nanotechnology offers considerable potential for increasing agricultural productivity, while at the same time reducing impacts on the environment and human health.

The non-tuberculous mycobacterium Mycobacterium immunogenum colonizes industrial metalworking fluids (MWFs) presumably due to its relative resistance to the currently practiced biocides
and has been implicated in occupational respiratory hazards, particularly hypersensitivity pneumonitis. With an aim to understand
its inherent biocide susceptibility profile and survival potential in MWF, five different genotypes of this organism, including
a reference genotype (700506) and four novel test genotypes (MJY-3, MJY-4, MJY-10 and MJY-12) isolated in our recent study
from diverse MWF operations were evaluated. For this, two commercial biocide formulations, Grotan (Hexahydro-1,3,5-tris(2-hydroxyethyl)-s-triazine) and Kathon (5-chloro-2-methyl-4-isothiazolin-3-one) currently practiced for the control of microorganisms, including
mycobacteria, in MWF operations were tested. Effect of the fluid matrix on the biocide susceptibility was investigated for
the synthetic (S) and semi-synthetic (SS) MWF matrices. In general, the minimum inhibitory concentration values were higher
for the HCHO-releasing biocide Grotan than the isothiazolone biocide Kathon. All genotypes (except the reference genotype)
showed lower susceptibility in SS as compared to S fluid matrix for Grotan. However, in case of Kathon, a greater susceptibility
was observed in SS fluid for majority of the test genotypes (MJY-3, 4 and 10). The test genotypes were more resistant than
the reference genotype to either biocide in both fluid types. Furthermore, the individual genotypes showed differential biocidal
susceptibility, with MJY-10 being the most resistant. These observations emphasize the importance of using the resistant genotypes
of M. immunogenum as the test strains for formulation or development and evaluation of existing and novel biocides, for industrial applications.

Natural gypsum (NG) and phosphogypsum (PG) were tested for resistance to fungal growth based on standard test ASTM D 3273-86, with the recommended mixture of three fungal species, and using the same test modified by the use of a Cladosporium sp. A, isolated from a gypsum plaster ceiling. In the standard test little growth occurred on any of the test specimens. However, abundant fungal growth was produced by the Cladosporium sp. A on phosphogypsum, which was much more susceptible than natural gypsum. Phosphogypsum heated to 600°C to destroy organic residues was resistant to growth of Cladosporium sp. A, as well as other fungi isolated from phosphogypsum panels stored in the environment for 2 years: Cladosporium sp. B, Aspergillus niger and Trichoderma sp. Phosphogypsum moulded in Petri dishes was susceptible to growth of a wide range of fungi, although Fusarium sp. and Rhizopus sp. caused practically no discoloration of the substrate. Six biocides were separately incorporated into the phosphogypsum at concentrations recommended by the suppliers and test specimens incubated on Sabouraud agar inoculated with various fungal isolates. The biocide 2-N-octyl-4-isothiazolin-3-one was the most efficient compound. It prevented the growth of the fungi most likely to cause health problems in buildings, but not that of Helminthosporium sp., isolated from powdered phosphogypsum in the factory. This was the most resistant fungus showing growth on all biocide-containing specimens.

Environmental chemicals in eggs of inland and Wadden Sea breeding Oystercatchers (Haematopus ostralegus)
Summary Due to the international importance of the Wadden Sea for waders and waterfowl a long-term programme to monitor contamination of birds breeding in the Wadden Sea has been established in the early 1980s. One of the species selected is the Oystercatcher. Comparatively little is known about contamination of birds breeding inland. Therefore, we collected eight eggs of Oystercatchers breeding at the Lower Rhine (district of Kleve) and analysed their contamination with biocides (DDT, DDE, HCH) and industrial chemicals (PCB, HCB, Hg) in comparison to birds breeding on the Wadden Sea islands of Griend (NL) and Mellum (D), where ten eggs were collected in 1994/95. We found distinctive differences between inland and Wadden Sea breeding Oystercatchers. Eggs from the Lower Rhine had significantly higher residues of all organochlorines, whereas concentration of mercury was significantly lower than in those from birds breeding on the Wadden Sea islands. In general, eggs collected on Griend held lower concentrations than those collected on Mellum island, except pp'-DDT and PCB. The high PCB contamination in Ostercatcher eggs from the Lower Rhine nowadays reflects the extreme pollution in the past. However, concentrations of the parameters studied obviously had no embryotoxic effects in Oystercatchers.
