A new specimen of an araucarian cone,Araucaria nihongii, was found attached to the vegetative organs ofYezonia vulgaris, and is described asAraucaria vulgaris comb. nov. Thick branches show characteristic bark structure with lenticular patches. Secondary wood is usually araucarioid. Leaves are arranged helically on shoots, which are imbricate, appressed and fused to surface of the stem. External and anatomical features of leaves closely resembleBrachyphyllum. The seed cone is spherical with winged bracts and thin ovuliferous scales. One seed is borne per cone-scale complex. The seed coat and nucellus wall show typical araucarian structure. An araucarian plant that boreBrachyphyllum-like foliage and aEutacta-like seed cone was predicted by Harris in 1979. This reconstructed plant,Araucaria vulgaris, supports this theory and proves the presence of an extinct characteristic-form of the genus. A new section of the genus was proposed forAraucaria vulgaris. The polysaccharide component of the stigmatic exudate from Lilium longiflorum has the composition, arabinose (26%), rhamnose (6%), galactose (57%) and glucuronic acid (11%). The highly branched polysaccharide bears a striking resemblance to the acidic polysaccharide exudate from Araucaria bidwillii in belonging to the galactan group and in carrying outer chains terminated by arabinofuranose, rhamnopyranose, galactopyranose and glucuronic acid residues. Both polysaccharides contain the sequence O-rhamnopyranosyl-(1→4)-glucopyranosyluronic acid-(1→6)-galactopyranose in some of the outer chains.  相似文献

Habitat fragmentation has resulted in many species becoming geographically restricted, as dispersal among subsequent isolates becomes compromised. This study investigated the effects of historical fragmentation on the genetic diversity and differentiation of Australia's Bunya Pine (Araucaria bidwillii) using random amplified DNA (RAPD) markers. High diversity characterises all Bunya populations sampled, regardless of population size or degree of isolation, which may be either due to similar effective population size among populations, or the lagging effects of the detection of contemporary genetic signal in long-lived conifer species. Large genetic differentiation characterises the northern and southern populations, although all sampled populations are significantly differentiated from each other. The northern population, at Mt Lewis, is responsible for the majority of variation detected among populations, and as such represents a significant genetic reservoir. The conservation of the genotypes of the Mt Lewis population may be imperative for the future of the species, given predicted models of accelerated climate change over the coming decades.  相似文献

Habitat fragmentation and a decrease in population size may lead to a loss in population genetic diversity. For the first time, the reduction in genetic diversity in the northernmost limit of natural occurence (southeastern Brazil) of Araucaria angustifolia in comparison with populations in the main area of the species continuous natural distribution (southern Brazil), was tested. The 673 AFLPs markers revealed a high level of genetic diversity for the species (Ht = 0.27), despite anthropogenic influence throughout the last century, and a decrease of H in isolated populations of southeastern Brazil (H = 0.16), thereby indicating the tendency for higher genetic diversity in remnant populations of continuous forests in southern Brazil, when compared to natural isolated populations in the southeastern region. A strong differentiation among southern and southeastern populations was detected (AMOVA variance ranged from 10%-15%). From Bayesian analysis, it is suggested that the nine populations tested form five "genetic clusters" (K = 5). Five of these populations, located in the northernmost limit of distribution of the species, represent three "genetic clusters". These results are in agreement with the pattern of geographic distribution of the studied populations.  相似文献

The cuticle micromorphology of the leaves of the monospecific genus Saxegothaea (Podocarpaceae) was studied by scanning electron microscopy. The external and internal features of the adaxial and abaxial surfaces were characterized. The leaves are hypostomatic. The external adaxial cuticle is rugose with irregular ridges and shallow trench‐like structures that do not correspond to any feature of the inner cuticle surface. The external abaxial cuticle has densely crowded stomata arranged in two bands. The stomata are sunken with pronounced, interrupted Florin rings. Stomatal plugs were not observed. Internally, the adaxial epidermal cells are usually rectangular to square; the abaxial epidermal cells are mainly restricted to the midrib and margins and narrowly rectangular; any among the stomata are irregularly shaped. The stomata are nearly all in direct contact. They show unusual features, including an extra pair of cuticular flanges between the guard cell flanges and those of the lateral subsidiary cells, and ‘bridges’ of lateral subsidiary cell tissue extending polewards above the polar extensions to unite with those at their tips. Neither of these features has been reported previously in Podocarpaceae. The results are discussed in the light of recent phylogenetic studies.
