Synopsis This paper describes the magnitude and geographic dispersion of adult steelhead trout, Salmo gairdneri, diverted from Columbia River tributaries which were impacted by the 1980 volcanic eruption of Mount St. Helens. Compelling circumstantial evidence suggests that for 1–3 yr after the eruption, large numbers of adult steelhead migrating toward affected tributaries entered two non-affected tributaries flowing into the Columbia River upstream of natal streams. Streams downstream of affected tributaries did not appear to receive substantial numbers of displaced fish. I estimated that the percentage of non-natal steelhead migrating into the lower portions of the nearest upstream river increased from 16% pre-eruption to 45% post-eruption. Winter-run steelhead strays probably originated from both the Cowlitz and Toutle rivers, whereas summer-run strays originated predominantly from the Toutle River. Increased natural production in tributaries resulting from the infusion of large numbers of strays was of insufficient magnitude to be detected by the methods of this study.  相似文献

Illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) Fishing is considered a major threat to high seas fish stocks. Each of the the international regional fishery management organizations (RFMOs) are combating some form of IUU fishing and this led the Food and Agriculture Oranization of the United Nations (FAO) to adopt the International Plan of Action to Deter, Prevent and Eliminate IUU Fishing (IPOA-IUU). This article will analyze the issues involved with IUU fishing, examine the recommendations in the IPOA, and consider examples of successful management and enforcement measures in use by states and RFMOs. Finally, recent developments in China will be viewed as an example of how international cooperation is contagious.  相似文献

Recent investigations into the nutrient cycling of coastal ecosystems have suggested that migratory or anadromous fish could be important vectors of marine nutrients. Anadromous fish have assimilated marine nutrients that would contribute to the nutrient budgets of freshwater systems by excretion, gamete release, or the decay of post-reproductive carcasses. However, the extent to which freshwater predators utilize marine material is not well understood. In systems where anadromous fish temporarily constitute a major portion of the fish community, they may contribute substantially to the diet of piscivorous fish and other predators. Here we show the contribution of anadromous blueback herring, shad, and alewife (Alosa) to diets of large, non-indigenous piscivorous catfish (Ictalurus furcatus) using δ34S and δ13C. The spawning anadromous Alosa, captured in tidal freshwater, had enriched δ34S and δ13C values compared to resident, native freshwater species. As a result of consuming the anadromous Alosa, the I. furcatus isotope signature shifted towards the marine signal. The isotope analysis revealed that anadromous fish contribute substantially to the diet of most captured I. furcatus. The percentage of anadromous Alosa carbon and sulfur that was incorporated into I. furcatus (≥38 cm total length) ranged from 0 to 84% and 10 to 69%, and had means (±SD) of 42 (±24) and 43 (±16)%, respectively. Although the δ15N signal of marine-derived biomass is enriched by approximately 3‰ relative to terrestrial or freshwater biomass, it was not as useful as δ34S and δ13C for nutrient source owing to trophic fractionation. 溯江产卵洄游中的刀鲚是目前长江最为名贵的水产品之一。本文分析了2009年4~5月采自长江九段沙、靖江和芜湖3个江段的299尾洄游型刀鲚样本。结果显示,3个群体的体长范围为15.8~32.8(平均23.32?3.49)cm,18~24cm体长组占总数的52.51%。体重范围为11.83~143.8 (平均48.19?24.89) g,10~50g体重组占总数的59.53%。芜湖群体的体长和体重均显著小于九段沙和靖江群体(ANOVA, p=0.000<0.001)。299尾个体包括1~4龄4个年龄组,其中51.28%的九段沙个体和53.97%的靖江个体均为3龄;而多达85.26%的芜湖个体则为2龄。不论体长、体重还是年龄结构,已较上世纪70年代同江段渔获物有明显下降。结果还显示,研究样本的雌雄性比为1:1.57,九段沙、靖江和芜湖群体的性比分别为1:1.28、1:1.46和1:1.97,显示出沿长江往上性比逐渐增加的现象。3个群体的平均丰满度为0.35?0.049,但即使是在同龄组间,靖江群体的丰满度也显著高于芜湖和九段沙群体,这可作为大个体刀鲚在这一江段最名贵高价的一种解释。  相似文献

Juvenile anadromous river herring (alewives, Alosa pseudoharengus, and blueback herring, Alosa aestivalis) spend 3–7 months in freshwater before migrating to the ocean, often exhibiting waves of early and late migrations. Migratory patterns and associated abiotic and biotic factors were examined for both species migrating in 2003 from Herring River in Bourne Massachusetts. Migrating herring were grouped into two temporal periods and separated by species. Relationships between abiotic (water temperature, lunar phase, and precipitation) and biotic (size, age, growth rate, and hatch date) factors and the timing of out-migration (transition to seawater) were examined. Blueback herring migration coincided with a sharp decrease in temperature consistent with the time of year. Peaks in alewive migration may reflect adaptive traits maximizing likelihood of survival through seasonal marginal stream habitats and also avoiding lethal water temperatures in winter. Migrating bluebacks exhibited a single migratory period (late September–October) which occurred between the early and late migratory pulses of the alewives. These patterns may also represent distinct migration strategies between early and late migrating alewives and between the two species of river herring. Early migration may be a mechanism by which factors such as competition and low food availability are mitigated. In contrast, environmental conditions during the post hatching time of late migrators may allow for a size maximizing strategy that promotes migration from the nursery area as late as possible.  相似文献

Synopsis The question of how (and why) the ureosmotic strategy, characteristic of Latimeria chalumnae and the chondrichthians evolved is addressed. There are three requirements for ureosmotic regulation: urea synthesis via the ornithine-urea cycle, urea tolerance involving biochemical and physiological adjustments, and urea retention that requires renal, branchial, metabolic and reproductive adaptations. Several examples of lower vertebrates in which urea plays a physiological role are considered to see whether they might provide insight into the origin of ureosmotic regulation. The guppy shows high urea synthesis and retention during embryonic development, and it is possible that a developmental role of urea is a general phenomenon in fishes. The toadfish, thought to be an enigma with high urea synthesis in the absence of an obvious physiological role of urea, is ureotelic under some conditions. Its urea excretion is likely related to renal function and/or parental care. In lungfish high ureogenesis is associated with estivation in periodically dry habitats. The resultant hyperuremia prevents ammonia toxicity, inhibits water loss and may repress metabolism. Latimeria is a classic marine ureosmotic regulator in which urea is used as an osmolyte that allows osmotic equilibrium with sea water while maintaining low ion levels. Adults of the frog, Rana cancrivora, are also ureosmotic regulators in brackish water. A scenario is proposed that suggests how ureosmotic regulation could have evolved in Latimeria and other fishes. The ornithine-urea cycle (composed of an arginine synthetic pathway and a second pathway that splits arginine into urea) occurred in fossil anadromous agnathans. Here the first pathway functioned in the ammocoete-like larvae for the generation of arginine to supplement a protein-deficient diet of algae, whereas the arginase pathway was important in the embryo for vitellin catabolism. Gnathostome evolution was associated with trends towards large eggs and prolonged development, requiring a complete ornithine-urea cycle for ammonia detoxification in embryos. Retention of a complete ornithine-urea cycle throughout adult life (via paedomorphosis) would preadapt any relatively large, sluggish, euryhaline fish for ureosmotic regulation when it was exposed to sea water. It is suggested that ureosmotic regulators evolved from freshwater or anadromous ancestors that entered the marine habitat. Once early ureosmotic regulators were established in the sea there would have been strong selection for internal fertilization and development, as is seen in Latimeria and many elasmobranchs. It is suggested that ureosmotic regulation was a common strategy in Paleozoic marine gnathostomes.  相似文献

Anadromy was documented in 16 lake trout, Salvelinus namaycush, from Canada's central Arctic using capture data and otolith microchemistry. For the first time, estuarine/marine habitat use was described for five individuals using acoustic telemetry. Age-at-first-migration to sea was variable (10–39 years) among individuals and most S. namaycush undertook multiple anadromous migrations within their lifetime. Telemetry data suggested that S. namaycush do not travel far into marine habitats and prefer surface waters (<2 m). These results further our collective understanding of the marine ecology of Arctic S. namaycush.  相似文献

Spawning migration patterns were compared between sympatric populations of the anadromous Japan Sea (JS) form and Pacific Ocean (PO) form of the threespine stickleback Gasterosteus aculeatus in the Lake Akkeshi–Bekanbeushi River system, eastern Hokkaido, Japan. In Akkeshi Bay and Lake Akkeshi, the JS form had longer collecting peak periods and more collection peaks than the PO form. Furthermore, although the PO form migrated upstream in freshwater habitats, the greater part of the JS form stayed in brackish waters before breeding. These findings suggest that the 2 forms have distinctly different spawning migration patterns and breeding grounds.  相似文献

Synopsis Migratory fishes should exhibit higher growth rates and larger body size than nonmigrants. To test this hypothesis, laboratory reared threespine sticklebacks,Gasterosteus aculeatus, representing three populations from a single drainage in northern California, U.S.A. were compared. These populations differ in their migratory patterns, ranging from highly migratory anadromous forms to nonmigratory freshwater residents. The nonmigratory inland population was significantly smaller in standard length at most ages, with correspondingly reduced growth rates compared to the more migratory upstream and estuary populations. Von Bertalanffy growth functions described the growth trajectories of these fish well, accounting for approximately 99% of the variance in body size exhibited by these populations. Broad sense heritability estimates for body size were significant for all three populations at age 60 days but were significant only for the inland population at later ages. The results of this study provide evidence of genetically-based variation in growth rate and body size among these stickleback populations, and these differences are consistent with the hypothesis that adaptation to different migratory lifestyles has occurred.  相似文献
