The response of a bumblebee goby,Brachygobius sabanus,to chemical stimuli from injured conspecifics 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Synopsis
Brachygobius sabanus move less often and spend less time swimming when they detect chemicals released from injured conspecifics. This resembles the alarm response found in ostariophysan fishes, darters, and at least one other gobiid. Chemicals from injured Poecilia reticulata do not induce an alarm response in B. sabanus. 相似文献

Summary We studied interspecific alarm communication between two species of social wasps in a nesting association in northwestern Costa Rica by testing the alarm responses ofPolybia occidentalis andMischocyttarus immarginatus to venom of both species. This is the first investigation of alarm pheromone in the genusMischocyttarus. M. immarginatus did not respond with alarm behavior to the venom of either species.P. occidentalis, which responds to its own venom with alarm behavior (Jeanne, 1981), also responded with alarm behavior to the venom ofM. immarginatus, but with much less intensity. Since heterospecific venoms did not release species-typical levels of alarm behavior, we conclude that interspecific alarm signalling plays no role in the nesting association. 相似文献

The winter cherry bug, Acanthocoris sordidusThunberg , lives in aggregation especially in their early larval instars. Using the 1st-instar larvae of this species, the author tried to clarify both the processes and the mechanisms of the breakup and later re-formation of colony in relation to the defence against their enemies. The results obtained were summarized as follows.
- In the field population, there is a high possibility of dispersal of the 1st-instar larvae from a colony possibly through the disturbance by some predators but they can re-form a colony with each other or join, with colonies of different instar larvae.
- The individuals in a colony immediately disperse through the attack of predatory coccinellid beetle, Harmonica axyridis but tend to re-form a colony in a short time.
- The breakup of colony is caused by the secretion from the attacked individual.
- The formation of colony is attributed to the habit closely related with the senses of smell and/or contact.

The use of chemical information in assessment of predation risk is pervasive across animal taxa. However, by its very nature, chemical information can be temporally unreliable. Chemical cues persist for some period of time after they are released into the environment. Yet, we know surprisingly little about the rate of degradation of chemical cues under natural conditions and hence little about how they function in temporal risk assessment under natural conditions. Here, we conducted an experiment to identify a concentration of fresh alarm cues that evoke a strong antipredator response in coral reef damselfish, Pomacentrus ambonensis. We then tested the rate at which these alarm cues degraded under natural conditions in ocean water, paying attention to whether the rate of degradation varied throughout the day and whether the temporal pattern correlated with physicochemical factors that could influence the rate of degradation. Fresh alarm cues released into ocean water evoke strong avoidance responses in juvenile fish, while those aged for 30 min no longer evoke antipredator responses. Fish exposed to cues aged for 10 or 20 min show intermediate avoidance responses. We found a marked temporal pattern of response throughout the day, with much faster degradation in early to mid‐afternoon, the time of day when solar radiation, temperature, dissolved oxygen, and pH are nearing their peak. Ecologists have spent considerable effort elucidating the role of chemical information in mediating predator–prey interactions, yet we know almost nothing about the temporal dynamics of risk assessment using chemical information. We are in dire need of additional comparative field experiments on the rate of breakdown of chemical cues, particularly given that global change in UV radiation, temperature, and water chemistry could be altering the rates of degradation and the potential use of this information in risk assessment. 相似文献

An alarm pheromone released from stressed conspecifics evokes behavioral and autonomic responses in rats. We have previously reported that male Wistar rats show behavioral changes including increased sniffing, walking and rearing, and decreased resting as well as exaggerated response of body temperature to a novel environment [known as stress-induced hyperthermia (SIH)] when they are exposed to an alarm pheromone released from other male rats receiving foot shocks. The purpose of the present study was to examine the role of testosterone in the production and release of the alarm pheromone using these behavioral and autonomic responses in recipient rats. Three groups of alarm pheromone donors were presented, namely, intact males, castrated males, and testosterone-implanted castrated males. The effects of the alarm pheromone on the autonomic responses did not differ among the three groups, regardless of the donor's steroidal milieu, whereas behavioral responses were altered by castrating the donor males and the effects were restored by testosterone implantation. These results suggest that the alarm pheromone released from stressed male rats can be classified into at least two categories according to the androgen dependency of their production and/or release. 相似文献

When animals receive stimuli associated with incompatible responses, they either show behaviour patterns relevant to just one input (hierarchical model) or show levels of responses intermediate in intensity (summation model). When animals have alternative responses to one category of input, the summation model can be followed.
Individuals of the porcellanid crab Petrolisthes elongates were exposed to food odours and then to alarm odours and the intensity of feeding behaviours recorded. With their chelipeds intact, crabs exposed to food and alarm odours showed intermediate levels of feeding. Following the induction of cheliped autotomy (thereby eliminating autotomy as an alternative response to predation risk), the crabs exposed to food and alarm odours showed a complete cessation of feeding responses. Thus elimination of an alternative response to elevated predation risk led to a switch from the summation model to the hierarchical model, as predicted. 相似文献

Is there any evidence that aphid alarm pheromones work as prey and host finding kairomones for natural enemies? 下载免费PDF全文
1. The aphid alarm pheromone (E)‐β‐farnesene (EBF) is often considered to be used by natural enemies as a prey/host finding kairomone. However, studies show opposing results, some appear to confirm an attraction of aphid natural enemies by EBF whereas others do not provide any evidence for the kairomone function of EBF. 2. To clarify if aphid natural enemies are attracted by the amounts of EBF naturally emitted by aphids, the existing literature was reviewed about EBF attractiveness to aphid natural enemies with consideration of the amounts of EBF used in the studies. 3. Thirty‐one publications that investigated the ability of EBF, aphid cornicle secretion, and attacked aphids, to attract aphid natural enemies were found. Several studies showed an attraction by EBF, but these used much higher amounts of EBF than usually emitted by aphids during a predator attack. Studies investigating EBF amounts similar to what is emitted by aphids are rare and failed to show attraction. Only two studies document an attraction of natural enemies by attacked aphids. 4. As EBF is emitted in very low amounts, not very stable, and only present after an attack, we suggest that aphid‐derived EBF is not a suitable kairomone for most natural enemy species, especially when they are able to use alternative cues. As EBF, amongst other volatiles, is also emitted by herbivore‐induced plants, we propose that natural enemies might use plant‐derived EBF as a synomone to identify aphid‐infested plants via an altered plant volatile bouquet. 相似文献

The production of diapausing eggs by Daphnia magna stimulated by fish exudates can be explained as an anti-predator defence ensuring genome protection in periods of high risk
from fish predation. The combined effects on the induction of D. magna diapause of an “alarm” chemical originating from injured conspecific prey and fish kairomones were tested. The results of
the experiment showed that the cues when present together promote both the production of ephippial eggs and male formation,
indicating their role in the synchronization of the entire mode of Daphnia sexual reproduction. Ephippial eggs were only produced in the presence of both fish kairomone and conspecific alarm chemicals,
while male offspring occurred in the treatments where both, one or none of the cues were present. However, production of males
was the highest when both cues were provided. D. magna responded similarly to the tested cues whether or not the hypothetical alarm substance associated with predator odour came
from Daphnia specimens actually eaten by fish or from crushed conspecific individuals. However, chemicals from crushed chironomid larvae
combined with fish kairomones did not induce a similar response in D. magna. The relative advantage of utilization of alarm cues or predator kairomones in the induction of defence responses in prey
organisms is discussed.
