Summary Extracellular stimulation over the dorsal funiculus in the spinal cord of lampreys was found to selectively activate prolonged episodes of fictive arousal respiration (Figs. 1, 3). The induced episodes showed comparable increases in cycle frequency and motoneuron burst duration to the spontaneous arousal pattern observed in isolated brain preparations (Fig. 2). Intracellular stimulation of primary sensory neurons with axons in the dorsal funiculus, called dorsal cells, also elicited the arousal pattern (Fig. 4). Mechanoreceptive dorsal cells respond to cutaneous stimulation. When mechanical stimuli were applied to the skin of intact lampreys (Fig. 6) or to lampreys with ipsilateral vagotomy, arousal respiration was induced (Figs. 7, 8). Bilateral, but not unilateral, trigeminal lesion blocked dorsal cell induction of the arousal response (Fig. 5). Spontaneous arousal respiration was recorded from intact, unrestrained lampreys (Fig. 9). These results suggest that fictive arousal respiration is the in vitro correlate of natural arousal respiration in lampreys, and that one mechanism leading to arousal respiration may be the activity of sensory dorsal cells. A model for respiratory motor pattern switching in lamprey is proposed. The model suggests that the normal and arousal patterns are produced by separately engaging rostral or caudal pattern generators in the medulla, rather than by modifying one pattern generator (Fig. 10).  相似文献

Synopsis Evidence is presented which suggests that the nonparasitic lamprey, Lampetra (Eudontomyzon) gracilis Kux, 1965, is conspecific with the parasitic lamprey Eudontomyzon danfordi Regan, 1911. The diagnostic characters of the holotype and of the non-type material of E. gracilis are features found in E. danfordi specimens in their second and final year of adult life, thereby making the former a junior synonym of the latter.  相似文献

Based on protochordates and extant fish, the earliest Palaeozoic vertebrates were microphagous suspension-feeding animals that pumped food-carrying water very slowly and thus required highly concentrated suspensions. Such conditions exist in benthic (not open water) aquatic environments. Feeding modes which on the basis of extant fish are closely related to benthic microphagous suspension feeding include deposit feeding, epilithic algal scraping, and macrophagous suspension feeding; early jawless vertebrates are predicted to have included all these feeding types. The gnathostome condition is predicted to have followed an initial switch from feeding on suspensions to taking tiny individual food particles (microphagous suspension-feeding → microphagous particulate-feeding → macrophagous particulate-feeding).  相似文献

Synopsis Sex ratios of least brook lamprey,Lampetra aepyptera, larvae varied widely among 12 geographically-diverse streams of the eastern United States. The extremes were 29 and 71% male, and the proportion of males increased significantly with relative population density, which was estimated among the streams from the number of larvae collected per m2 of substrate. The skewed sex ratios were not likely due to differential mortality between the sexes or differential recruitment to the adult stock, since they were established at the time of gonadal differentiation (at ca. 2 years of age) and remained relatively constant over the subsequent 2–3 years of larval life. Furthermore, although females seemed to predominate in the oldest larval age class, thus appearing to metamorphose later than males, their numbers were small and were omitted from the overall sex ratio. Sex ratio did not vary significantly with water hardness, pH, annual thermal units, or latitude. The possible adaptive significance of density-dependent sex determination in lampreys, however, remains elusive. It has been proposed that growth-promoting conditions might yield female-biased sex ratios as a tactic for ensuring that relatively large individuals become females, thereby increasing their fecundity. As predicted, larval size at a given age was generally greater in low-density populations, but there was no relationship between sex ratio and larval size, and female larvae were not consistently larger than the males.  相似文献

Summary Myoglobin has been identified in the myocardium of the lampreyPetromyzon marinus, one of the most primitive of all vertebrates. This protein was isolated by ammonium sulphate fractionation and purified by successive chromatography on Ultrogel AcA 54, DEAE-Sephadex and CM-23 cellulose. The molecule differs substantially from the monomeric hemoglobins found in the lamprey as evidenced by its elution profile on DEAE-Sephadex and the fingerprint pattern of its enzymically-produced peptides. The functional significance of this protein in Agnatha is discussed.  相似文献

Genetic evidence for a trimeric structure for purine nucleoside phosphorylase in the brook lamprey is presented. This enzyme is encoded by a single locus with two alleles segregating at frequencies of 0.98 and 0.02 in a Welsh population. Ammocoete larvae of the sea lamprey Petromyzon marinus, a member of the primitive vertebrate class Agnatha, were tested for thermoregulatory behavior in an electronic shuttlebox (ichthyotron). The final preferendum derived from pooled data for 24 individually tested ammocoetes was characterized by a mean of 13.6 ± 0.17 (s.e.m.)°C, a mode and median of 140°C, and a range of voluntarily occupied temperatures from 10–19°C over a 3-day period.  相似文献

Conchodontus, Mitrellataxis and Fungulodus are phosphatic microfossils from the Late Devonian of China and North America, alternatively interpreted as conodont elements or fish scales. The histology and microornament of these sclerites have been studied in an attempt to resolve their affinity, and to determine characters for distinguishing between conodont elements and the ichthyoliths of other lower vertebrates. The histology of all three genera is directly comparable to conodont elements, dispelling the notion that conodonts are histologically indistinguishable from the teeth and scales of other vertebrates. Microornament is found not to be useful in discriminating between high-level taxonomic groupings. White matter and thickness of prismless enamel are suggested as apomorphies of the Conodonta.  相似文献

Using the hagfish, Eptatretus burgeri, the fine structure of formation of the micropylar region in hagfish eggs during the late stages of oogenesis was investigated for the first time, focusing on the bottom region of the micropyle and the egg surface. During these stages, many cells penetrated through the chorion and reached a pit of the egg surface, forming a shovel-like structure in two-dimensional sections. The cells, which we called micropylar cells, were separated from the chorion by a wall of amorphous material. In the pit, another fibrous layer filled the space between the egg surface and the anterior portion of the shovel-like structure. Microvilli coming from the egg surface were embedded in this layer. In later stages, the stack of micropylar cells loosened, and a space appeared between the anterior region of the shovel-like structure and the layer on the egg surface. Microvilli decreased in length and number. The pit region appeared likely to have a role in fertilization. The structures associated with the forming micropyle were markedly different from those observed in the same region of teleost fishes. A hypothesis that hagfish might show transitional structures in gametes from protochordates to teleosts is suggested.  相似文献
