In this article, I review the major characteristics of different types of appendage‐like processes that develop at the abdominal segments of many immature insects, and I discuss their controversial morphological value. The main question is whether the abdominal processes are derived from segmental appendages serially homologous to thoracic legs, or whether they are “secondary” outgrowths not homologous with true appendages. Morphological and embryological data, in particular, a comparison with the structure and development of the abdominal appendages in primitive apterygote hexapods, and data from developmental genetics, support the hypothesis of appendicular origin of many of the abdominal processes present in the juvenile stages of various pterygote orders. For example, the lateral processes, such as the tracheal gills in aquatic nymphs of exopterygote insects, are regarded as derived from lateral portions of appendage primordia, homologous with the abdominal styli of apterygotan insects; these processes correspond either to rudimentary telopodites or to coxal exites. The ventrolateral processes, such as the prolegs of different endopterygote insect larvae, appear to be derived from medial portions of the appendicular primordia; they correspond to coxal endites. These views lead to the rejection of Hinton's hypothesis (Hinton [1955] Trans R Entomol Soc Lond 106:455–545) according to which all the abdominal processes of insect larvae are secondary outgrowths not derived from true appendage anlagen. The temporal variation of stoichiometry between consumed oxygen and oxidized carbon was investigated for the aerobic mineralization of leachates from aquatic macrophytes. Seven species of aquatic plants, viz. Cabomba piauhyensis, Cyperus giganteus, Egeria najas, Eichhornia azurea, Salvinia auriculata, Scirpus cubensisand Utricularia breviscapa, were collected from Òleo lagoon located in the floodplain of Mogi-Guacu river (São Paulo State, Brazil). After being collected, the plants were washed, oven-dried and triturated. In order to obtain the leachate, the fragments were submitted to an aqueous extraction (cold). Mineralization chambers were incubated at 20 °C containing leachates dissolved in water samples from Òleo lagoon to a final concentration of ca. 200 mg l–1on carbon basis. The chambers were maintained under aerobic conditions; the concentrations of the organic carbon (particulate and dissolved) and the dissolved oxygen were measured during approximately 80 days. Elemental analysis of the detritus and the concentrations of the remaining material (DOC and POC) were used to determine the amounts of mineralized organic carbon. The data were analyzed with first-order kinetics models, from which the daily rates of consumption (carbon and oxygen) and the stoichiometry (O/C) were determined. In the early phase of mineralization the O/C rates increased before reaching a maximum, after which they tended to decrease. For the mineralization of leachates from C. giganteus, S. auriculata and U. breviscapa, the decrease was relatively slow. For all substrata the initial values were smaller than 1, and ranged from 0.42 (S. cubensis) to 0.81 (C. piauhyensis). The maximum values were within the range from 0.58 (U. breviscapa) to 23.1 (E. najas) and at their highest 26th (C. piauhyensis) and 106th (C. giganteus) days. These variations are believed to be associated with the chemical composition of the leachates, with their transformations and alterations of metabolic pathways involved in the mineralization. 相似文献

The non‐toxic compound N‐acetyl‐L‐phosphinothricin (N‐Ac‐L‐PPT) is used in a so‐called deacetylation system to induce male sterility in transgenic plants by tapetum specific deacetylation to the herbicide L‐phosphinothricin (L‐PPT). A procedure was developed to produce pure racemic and L‐isomeric N‐Ac‐PPT containing less than 30 ppm residual PPT. Experiments applied to wild type tobacco and PPT‐resistant tobacco showed that the maximal tolerated N‐Ac‐PPT concentration would be less than 45 mM of the L‐isomer. Otherwise unspecific deacetylation by several acylases, as well as by environmental conditions like higher temperatures or pHs beyond neutrality, increased the residual L‐PPT content to toxic concentrations. In contrast, N‐acetyl‐L‐phosphinothricyl‐alanyl‐alanine (N‐Ac‐L‐PPTT), a substance also occurring during the biosynthesis of phosphinothricyl‐alanyl‐alanine (PPTT) by some Streptomyces species, was tolerated up to 274 mM by wild type tobacco plants. However, the ArgE deacatylase from Escherichia coli originally used in the deacetylation system, as well as some other acylases, showed no activity towards N‐Ac‐L‐PPTT. 相似文献

1. Termites are one of the most important invertebrate ecosystem engineers in tropical regions, which may be quantified using termite biomass data. However, biomass data are particularly difficult to collect as they rely on termites being weighed in the field, which may neither be possible nor convenient. Local scale linear regression models, based on termite head widths (mm) and body masses (mg), have been used in the past to estimate termite biomass using head width and abundance data. However, these models represent very limited numbers of termite taxa from single sites. In the present study, I provide one of the most representative linear regression models available based on 90 samples from three different countries (Peru, Kenya, and Malaysia). 2. Although the linear regression model under‐ or overestimated body weights of taxa with characteristic features (e.g. large heads of Odontotermes workers or elongated abdomens of Kalotermitidae) it provides a robust method for estimating termite biomass at the community level. Additionally, while there are limitations related to the general model, which may be solved by focusing on taxa specific data and the use of higher accuracy equipment, it is the first model to facilitate termite biomass estimates using the head with and abundance data only. 3. This study encourages the use of termite biomass data to gain a better understanding of termites in ecosystem processes and calls for comparative data to be gathered for the purpose of creating models that may be representative of the variability among termite taxa. 相似文献

Sedimentation in rivers is dominated by a complex set of physical processes, associated with the unidirectional flow of water.
Variations in these processes give rise to different fluvial channel types, whose character can commonly be recognised in
the ancient record. Chemical and biological processes are comparatively unimportant in fluvial sedimentation.
In contrast, physical, chemical or biological processes can each dominate sedimentation in lakes. Physical (clastic) deposition
dominates in high-latitude and mountain lakes (in which chemical and biological activity are low), and in lakes with high
relief of the drainage basin and lake floor. Its variety reflects a range of processes influenced by river inflow, wave and
current action, thermal and density effects.
Economic benefits from the study of lake and river sedimentation include both resource and environmental aspects. An example
is given of a mercury pollution study in a fluvial ecosystem. It shows that return to background levels can take place within
a relatively short interval after cessation of pollutant input. 相似文献

In soil micromorphology fissures are considered in vertical sections. To get information about the properties of the soil the joint distribution of spatial direction and width of these fissures is of interest. The fissures are mathematically generalized to flat bodies which are defined as stationary weighted surface processes with the weight “thickness”. In a typical point of the surface process suitable, joint parametric distributions of direction and thickness are assumed. The parameters have to be estimated from measurements on vertical sections which are taken from the soil. On these sections only a visible thickness and a visible angle can be observed. The joint distribution of these variables can be expressed by the joint distribution of spatial direction and thickness with the same parameters and in this indirect way the parameters can be estimated. The paper describes how to randomize the vertical section and how to measure the visible variables on the sections. The Chi-Square method is proposed for the parameter estimation. Further it is discussed how to derive good starting values for the numerical procedure. All this is demonstrated in a simulation study using the Bingham-Mardia distribution for the direction and the lognormal distribution for the thickness including a way to correlate the mean thickness and the direction. Finally an application in soil micromorphology is demonstrated for one soil horizon. 相似文献

Nitrosation activity was measured in Escherichia coli isolates and a range of nitrite reductase (nir) mutants. Activity was only detected in intact cells and could be inhibited by a number of treatments such as sonication and osmotic shock. Aerobically-grown cells had highest nitrosation activity compared to oxygen-limited ones. Inclusion of nitrite in growth media induced high activities of nitrite reductase and for some isolates, nitrosation. Analysis of nir mutants identified two which were unable to nitrosate. This result suggested that NADH-dependent nitrite reductase was implicated either directly or indirectly in nitrosation. 相似文献
