The awareness of the importance of plant biodiversity has been considerably raised in both developed and developing countries over the last decade. Some of the debate has not been helpful in fostering collaboration or progress towards a more rational support network. The paper attempts to identify and categorize existing efforts in operation in a wide range of institutions and bodies ranging from essentially environmentally orientated to crop-based organizations. The influence of short day and low temperature on cold acclimation of A. crispa (Ait.) Pursh, A. glutinosa (L.) Gaertn. and A. rubra Bong, was investigated. Two clones of each species originating from in vitro propagation were exposed to three daylength/temperature treatments. Periodically plantlets were exposed to controlled freezing temperature in order to evaluate their level of frost hardiness.
Short day (SD) and cold temperature (CT) and long day (LD) and cold temperature (CT) were the most effective treatments for the development of frost hardiness in shoots and roots of the three species tested. Short day (SD) and warm temperature (WT) induced a significant increase in hardiness in shoots of all three species. However, this treatment did not trigger root hardening. A. crispa was found to be the hardiest species followed by A. glutinosa and A. rubra . Intraspecific variation was observed between the two A. glutinosa clones. A glutinosa clone AG8, a Russian provenance, showed a greater freezing resistance than A. glutinosa clone AG2, a German provenance.  相似文献

The effects of repeated exposures to resting cold air (10°C) on the shivering and thermogenic responses of women to standard cold stress were investigated. Ten women, aged 18 to 34 years, were divided into two groups of five women each. One group, the acclimated (A) was exposed ten times within 2 weeks, the first and the last exposures being the pre-and post-tests respectively. The second group, the control (C) was exposed twice within 18 days. Measurements of rectal and skin temperatures, oxygen uptake, time to onset of shivering (TOS), and perceived cold were performed during all exposures. Shivering responses were evaluated by electromyography and visually. A significant (P<0.05), increase was seen in TOS (from 26.2 min to 55.6 min), and a significant decrease was seen in thermoregulatory heat production (from 14.78 kcal/h to –2.64 kcal/h) in group A; these changes were evident after about five exposures. It is concluded that the women became cold acclimated as a result of the repeated short-term resting cold air exposures.Research supported by Capes/Brazil, and by the Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais/Brazil  相似文献

Twenty-four women completed a 20-week heavy-resistance weight training program for the lower extremity. Workouts were twice a week and consisted of warm-up exercises followed by three sets each of full squats, vertical leg presses, leg extensions, and leg curls. All exercises were performed to failure using 6-8 RM (repetition maximum). Weight training caused a significant increase in maximal isotonic strength (1 RM) for each exercise. After training, there was a decrease in body fat percentage (p less than 0.05), and an increase in lean body mass (p less than 0.05) with no overall change in thigh girth. Biopsies were obtained before and after training from the superficial portion of the vastus lateralis muscle. Sections were prepared for histological and histochemical examination. Six fiber types (I, IC, IIC, IIA, IIAB, and IIB) were distinguished following routine myofibrillar adenosine triphosphatase histochemistry. Areas were determined for fiber types I, IIA, and IIAB + IIB. The heavy-resistance training resulted in significant hypertrophy of all three groups: I (15%), IIA (45%), and IIAB + IIB (57%). These data are similar to those in men and suggest considerable hypertrophy of all major fiber types is also possible in women if exercise intensity and duration are sufficient. In addition, the training resulted in a significant decrease in the percentage of IIB with a concomitant increase in IIA fibers, suggesting that strength training may lead to fiber conversions.  相似文献

Effect of high-intensity endurance training on isokinetic muscle power   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of high-intensity endurance training on isokinetic muscle power. Six male students majoring in physical-education participated in high intensity endurance training on a cycle ergometer at 90% of maximal oxygen uptake (VO2max) for 7 weeks. The duration of the daily exercise session was set so that the energy expenditure equalled 42 kJ.kg-1 of lean body mass. Peak knee extension power was measured at six different speeds (30 degrees, 60 degrees, 120 degrees, 180 degrees, 240 degrees, and 300 degrees.s-1) with an isokinetic dynamometer. After training, VO2max increased significantly from mean values of 51.2 ml.kg-1.min-1, SD 6.5 to 56.3 ml.kg-1.min-1, SD 5.3 (P less than 0.05). Isokinetic peak power at the lower test speeds (30 degrees, 60 degrees and 120 degrees.s-1) increased significantly (P less than 0.05). However, no significant differences in muscle peak power were found at the faster velocities of 180 degrees, 240 degrees, and 300 degrees.s-1. The percentage improvement was dependent on the initial muscle peak power of each subject and the training stimulus (intensity of cycle ergometer exercise).  相似文献

Self-management of insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (IDDM) is dependent on a negative feedback loop of blood glucose (BG) fluctuations, which in turn directs treatment decisions to maintain normal BG. Although this feedback is typically accomplished by self-monitoring of blood glucose (SMBG), SMBG has limitations, and patients often rely on what their BG feels like. Two studies were performed to evaluate whether patients could learn to more accurately feel/discriminate their BG on the basis of internal cues or internal plus external BG cues. In Study I, BG Awareness Training significantly improved pre- to posttreatment BG estimation accuracy, relative to a control group. Study II replicated BG Awareness Training efficacy in improving BG estimation accuracy. Improvement in estimation accuracy was related only to initial accuracy; those who were initially less accurate improved the most. This improvement was represented in a 31% reduction in dangerous BG estimation errors and a 9% increase in accurate estimates. Resulting estimations were, however, still significantly less accurate than SMBG at the end of training.This research was supported by NIH grants AM282880, AM24177, AM22125, and RR00847 and by the Ames Company. Recently, we have shown that an untrained respiratory system does limit the endurance of submaximal exercise (64% peak oxygen consumption) in normal sedentary subjects. These subjects were able to increase breathing endurance by almost 300% and cycle endurance by 50% after isolated respiratory training. The aim of the present study was to find out if normal, endurance trained subjects would also benefit from respiratory training. Breathing and cycle endurance as well as maximal oxygen consumption (VO2max) and anaerobic threshold were measured in eight subjects. Subsequently, the subjects trained their respiratory muscles for 4 weeks by breathing 85-160 l.min-1 for 30 min daily. Otherwise they continued their habitual endurance training. After respiratory training, the performance tests made at the beginning of the study were repeated. Respiratory training increased breathing endurance from 6.1 (SD 1.8) min to about 40 min. Cycle endurance at the anaerobic threshold [77 (SD 6) %VO2max] was improved from 22.8 (SD 8.3) min to 31.5 (SD 12.6) min while VO2max and the anaerobic threshold remained essentially the same. Therefore, the endurance of respiratory muscles can be improved remarkably even in trained subjects. Respiratory muscle fatigue induced hyperventilation which limited cycle performance at the anaerobic threshold. After respiratory training, minute ventilation for a given exercise intensity was reduced and cycle performance at the anaerobic threshold was prolonged. These results would indicate the respiratory system to be an exercise limiting factor in normal, endurance trained subjects.  相似文献

本实验在体力锻炼与脱锻炼过程中观察了五条成年雄性杂种狗的无氧阈(AT)、骨骼肌毛细血管密度(cap/mm~2)、毛细血管数与肌纤维数之比(C:F)、肌纤维组成——慢肌纤维百分比(%ST)以及毛细血管弥散距离(弥散距离)的变化。结果表明:锻炼前AT与cap/mm~2、C:F,%ST及弥散距离均分别有显著相关。锻炼后第五周,AT、cap/mm~2、C:F和%ST分别增加了40.9%、12.2%、22.9%和2.4%,弥散距离降低6.3%,其中只有AT的增加有显著意义,锻炼十周后,AT增加68.2%(P<0.001)、cap/mm~2增加37.8%(P<0.05)、C:F增加78.1%(P<0.001),弥散距离降低17.0%(P<0.01)而%ST无显著变化。停止锻炼后第五周,AT等各指标都有降低的趋势,但无显著意义,停止锻炼后第12周,AT、cap/mm~2,C:F,%ST分别降低了18.9%、10.9%、10.5%、2.9%,弥散距离增加5.1%,其中除AT的降低有显著意义外,其余指标的变化均无显著意义。与锻炼前相比,这些指标的变化。除%ST外,仍有显著变化。在锻炼与脱锻炼的过程中,AT与cap/mm~2、C:F、弥散距离在各期或整个过程中均呈显著相关,但与%ST相关不显著。实验结果提示,骨骼肌的毛细血管供应状况是决定无氧阈的重要因素之一。  相似文献

The influence of acute temperature change and temperature acclimation on the sensitivity of contracture development to ryanodine were examined in the rainbow trout myocardium using two preparations: in vitro isolated ventricular strips and in situ working perfused hearts. Ryanodine effects in vitro were dependent on test temperature (8 and 18 °C), pacing frequency (0.2–1.5 Hz) and acclimation temperature (8 and 18 °C). At a pacing frequency of 0.2 Hz and a test temperature of 18 °C, ryanodine depressed isometric tension development in ventricular strips both from trout acclimated to 8 and 18 °C but the decrease was significantly greater in strips from 8 °C-acclimated trout. No ryanodine effect was observed in either acclimation group at a test temperature of 8°C. The effect of ryanodine in vitro was reduced or lost at pacing frequencies greater than 0.2 Hz and at 0.6 Hz ryanodine depressed tension development at 18 °C only in strips from 8 °C-acclimated trout. Ryanodine did not affect tension development at stimulation rates above 0.6 Hz in any test group. Likewise, ryanodine did not significantly impair cardiac performance of in situ working perfused heart preparations which operated at intrinsic beat frequencies in excess of 0.6 Hz. These results suggest that the sarcoplamic reticulum calcium release channel of the trout myocardium is expressed but is not functionally involved in beat-to-beat regulation of contractility at either (1) low temperature (8 °C), or (2) at routine physiological heart rate (>0.6 Hz). However, under conditions in which involvement of the sarcoplasmic reticulum is observed (18 °C and a heart rate < 0.6 Hz), prior acclimation to low temperature results in either a greater capacity of the sarcoplasmic reticulum to store releasable calcium or an increase in the amount of calcium that is in releasable form.Abbreviations bm body mass - E-C coupling, excitation-contraction coupling - IVS isometric ventricular strip - SR sarcoplasmic reticulum - TES N-tris[hydroxy-methyl]methyl-2-aminoethane sulfonic acid - WPH in situ working perfused heart  相似文献

The effects of heavy resistance training and jumping exercise were examined during the 1989–1990 season in 12 international level alpine skiers. The athletes were tested before, during, immediately after training and during the period off training (June, July, October 1989, April 1990). Their mechanical behaviour was investigated using firstly squat jumps performed without (SJ) or with low extra loads (20 kg, SJ20kg) and high extra loads (equivalent to body mass on the shoulders, SJbm) and secondly 15–30 s continuous jumping. These tests allowed the assessment of explosive dynamic strength production (SJ and SJ20kg), slow dynamic strength (SJbm) and maximal mechanical power (continuous jumping). The training adopted resulted in specific changes in neuromuscular performance; in fact all the variables studied showed a significant improvement (P<0.01) from the beginning compared to the end of training. The range of improvement was between 55.4% (SJbm) and 12.5% (average power during 15-s continuous jumping). The enhancement of SJ had become significant by July. Surprisingly, even when no strength or jumping training was performed during the competition period (November-April), no deterioration in the neuromuscular performance was observed, there being no significant difference between the test values obtained in October 1989 and April 1990. It was concluded that the demanding competition programme of alpine skiers may provide a training stimulus adequate to maintain the neuromuscular improvement induced by training throughout the competition season.  相似文献
