Age-related decline in muscle strength can compromise shoulder function, which could increase the effort needed to perform activities of daily living (ADLs). The purpose of this cross-sectional study was to determine for the first time the relative shoulder effort during ADLs in healthy young and older adults.Ten healthy young adults and ten healthy older adults were tested for maximal isokinetic torque and on a set of ADL tasks. Using inverse dynamics, the shoulder torques during ADLs were referenced to the maximal isokinetic torque and relative effort was determined.Older compared to younger adults had >40% lower isokinetic shoulder abduction strength. The ratio of peak joint torque during six ADLs over the maximal isokinetic torque, i.e., relative effort, was higher in old (∼52%) compared with young adults (∼22%, p < 0.05). Relative effort in older adults was over 40% in overhead activities and particularly high in abduction and reaching tasks, over 60%.Healthy older compared with younger adults perform most ADL tasks involving the shoulder joint with nearly twice the level of relative effort. The concomitant reductions in maximal shoulder isokinetic torque and increases in relative effort may be related to the high prevalence of musculoskeletal pain and shoulder dysfunction in old age reported in epidemiological studies.  相似文献

Accurate estimates of diving metabolic rate are central to assessing the energy needs of marine mammals. To circumvent some of the limitations inherent with conducting energy studies in both the wild and captivity, we measured diving oxygen consumption of two trained Steller sea lions ( Eumetopias jubatus ) in the open ocean. The animals dived to predetermined depths (5–30 m) for controlled periods of time (50–200 s). Rates of oxygen consumption were measured using open-circuit respirometry before and after each dive. Mean resting rates of oxygen consumption prior to the dives were 1.34 (±0.18) and 1.95 (±0.19) liter/min for individual sea lions. Mean rates of oxygen consumption during the dives were 0.71 (±0.24) and 1.10 (±0.39) liter/min, respectively. Overall, rates of oxygen consumption during dives were significantly lower (45% and 41%) than the corresponding rates measured before dives. These results provide the first estimates of diving oxygen consumption rate for Steller sea lions and show that this species can exhibit a marked decrease in oxygen consumption relative to surface rates while submerged. This has important consequences in the evaluation of physiological limitations associated with diving such as dive duration and subsequent interpretations of diving behavior in the wild.  相似文献

The present study was conduced at two sites (Tembien and Wukro) in the semi-arid region of Tigray in northern Ethiopia to investigate the seasonal dynamics in the chemical composition and dry matter digestibility of grass and browse species of exclosures. The browse species studied in Tembien and Wukro had a mean crude protein (CP) value of 166 and 117 g/kg dry matter (DM), respectively. The mean in vitro dry matter digestibility (IVDMD) coefficient and predicted metabolizable energy (ME) density of the browse species were 0.72 and 9.83 MJ/kg DM, respectively at Tembien, 0.62 and 8.38 MJ/kg DM, respectively, at Wukro. Neutral detergent fibre (NDF) and acid detergent fibre (ADF) values of the browse species varied from 192 to 437 and 127 to 391 g/kg DM, respectively. Acid detergent lignin (ADL) values ranged from 36 to 190 g/kg DM. The mean CP of the grass species in Tembien and Wukro during the long rainy season was 76 and 73 g/kg DM, respectively and values declined below a critical maintenance level during the dry and short rain seasons. Mean IVDMD and ME values for the two sites were 0.41 and 0.47, and 5.38 and 6.11 MJ/kg DM, respectively. The NDF, ADF, and lignin values of the grass species were generally above 700, 400, and 70 g/kg DM, respectively. The CP, IVDMD and ME values of the mixed grass samples differed (P<0.05) among harvesting months and values ranged from 20 to 103 g/kg DM, 0.47 to 0.72 MJ/kg DM, and 6.16 to 9.91 MJ/kg DM, respectively. The browse species could be used as useful dry season protein supplements to the N deficient native grass species. Especial emphasis should be given to propagate Maerua angolensis and Cadaba farinosa at community nursery sites. Harvesting in September, rather than the current extended harvest period that took place in October and November, can considerably improve the feeding value of native grass hay for smallholder ruminant production systems.  相似文献

Objectives: To evaluate the association between high‐level functional capacity and chewing in a middle‐old community‐based population. Background: Although basic and instrumental activities of daily living are known to be associated with chewing ability in the elderly, an association between higher levels of competence and chewing ability has not been evaluated in the elderly. Materials and methods: The association between chewing ability using a number of different foods and high‐level functional capacity by the Tokyo Metropolitan Institute of Gerontology was evaluated in 694, 80‐year‐old people residing in Fukuoka Prefecture, Japan. Results: A significant correlation was found, using multiple regression or logistic regression analyses adjusted for various confounding factors, between the number of total chewable foods, hard foods or moderately hard foods, and total functional capacity, instrumental activity, intellectual activity or social role ability. In contrast, the number of slightly hard foods, easily chewable foods and remaining teeth were only partly related to total functional capacity and intellectual activity. Conclusion: High‐level functional capacity including intellectual activity and social role in middle‐old elderly was associated with the ability to chew hard foods than to chew easily chewable foods. Maintenance of chewing ability in elderly might result in better intellectual activity and social role.  相似文献

Diving animals offer a unique opportunity to study the importance of physiological constraint in their everyday behaviors. An important component of the physiological capability of any diving animal is its aerobic dive limit (ADL). The ADL has only been measured in a few species. The goal of this study was to estimate the aerobic dive limit from measurements of body oxygen stores and at sea metabolism. This calculated ADL (cADL) was then compared to measurements of diving behavior of individual animals of three species of otariids, the Antarctic fur seal, Arctocephalus gazella, the Australian sea lion, Neophoca cinerea, and the New Zealand sea lion, Phocarctos hookeri. Antarctic fur seals dove well within the cADL. In contrast, many individuals of both sea lion species exceeded the cADL, some by significant amounts. Australian sea lions typically dove 1.4 times longer than the cADL, while New Zealand sea lions on average dove 1.5 times longer than the cADL. The tendency to exceed the cADL was correlated with the dive pattern of individual animals. In both Antarctic Fur Seals and Australian sea lions, deeper diving females made longer dives that approached or exceeded the cADL (P<0.01, r(2)=0.54). Australian and New Zealand sea lions with longer bottom times also exceeded the cADL to a greater degree. The two sea lions forage on the benthos while the fur seals feed shallow in the water column. It appears that benthic foraging requires these animals to reach or exceed their aerobic dive limit.  相似文献

摘要 目的:研究西比灵联合神经生长因子(NGF)对脑出血患者的NIHSS、ADL评分及血肿体积影响。方法:研究对象选取我院2015年9月到2016年10月间收治的脑出血98例,采用随机数字法分为2组,每组各49例。对照组接受常规基础性治疗,在此基础上,研究组患者口服西比灵联合肌肉注射NGF治疗。比较两组患者的治疗总有效率,同时比较血肿、水肿带体积、神经功能缺损量表(NIHSS)、日常生活能力量表(ADL)评分、神经源性营养因子(BDNF)、单核细胞趋化蛋白-1(MCP-1)、神经元特异性烯醇化酶(NSE)水平变化情况及不良反应发生情况。结果:治疗后,两组总有效率比较差异显著(P<0.05);治疗前,研究组和对照组血肿体积、水肿带体积比较无显著差异;治疗后,研究组和对照组血肿体积、水肿带体积随着时间的推移而降低,且研究组均低于对照组,差异显著(P<0.05);治疗前,研究组和对照组NIHSS、ADL评分比较无显著差异;治疗后,研究组和对照组NIHSS随着时间的推移而降低,且研究组均低于对照组,ADL评分随着时间的推移而升高,且研究组高于对照组,差异显著(P<0.05);治疗前,研究组和对照组BDNF、MCP-1、NSE比较无显著差异;治疗后,研究组和对照组MCP-1、NSE随着时间的推移而降低,且研究组均低于对照组,BDNF随着时间的推移而升高,且研究组高于对照组,差异显著(P<0.05);两组不良反应比较无效显著差异(P>0.05)。结论:脑出血患者应用西比灵联合NGF效果可靠,可明显减少继发性损伤,且治疗安全性较高,值得在临床推广。  相似文献

The adaxial-abaxial axis in leaf primordia is thought to be established first and is necessary for the expansion of the leaf lamina along the mediolateral axis. To understand axis information in leaf development, we isolated the adaxialized leaf1 (adl1) mutant in rice, which forms abaxially rolled leaves. adl1 leaves are covered with bulliform-like cells, which are normally distributed only on the adaxial surface. An adl1 double mutant with the adaxially snowy leaf mutant, which has albino cells that specifically appear in the abaxial mesophyll tissue, indicated that adl1 leaves show adaxialization in both epidermal and mesophyll tissues. The expression of HD-ZIPIII genes in adl1 mutant increased in mature leaves, but not in the young primordia or the SAM. This indicated that ADL1 may not be directly involved in determining initial leaf polarity, but rather is associated with the maintenance of axis information. ADL1 encodes a plant-specific calpain-like cysteine proteinase orthologous to maize DEFECTIVE KERNEL1. Furthermore, we identified intermediate and strong alleles of the adl1 mutant that generate shootless embryos and globular-arrested embryos with aleurone layer loss, respectively. We propose that ADL1 plays an important role in pattern formation of the leaf and embryo by promoting proper epidermal development.  相似文献

Adenylosuccinate lyase (ADL) catalyzes the breakdown of 5-aminoimidazole- (N-succinylocarboxamide) ribotide (SAICAR) to 5-aminoimidazole-4-carboxamide ribotide (AICAR) and fumarate, and of adenylosuccinate (ADS) to adenosine monophosphate (AMP) and fumarate in the de novo purine biosynthetic pathway. ADL belongs to the argininosuccinate lyase (ASL)/fumarase C superfamily of enzymes. Members of this family share several common features including: a mainly alpha-helical, homotetrameric structure; three regions of highly conserved amino acid residues; and a general acid-base catalytic mechanism with the overall beta-elimination of fumarate as a product. The crystal structures of wild-type Escherichia coli ADL (ec-ADL), and mutant-substrate (H171A-ADS) and -product (H171N-AMP.FUM) complexes have been determined to 2.0, 1.85, and 2.0 A resolution, respectively. The H171A-ADS and H171N-AMP.FUM structures provide the first detailed picture of the ADL active site, and have enabled the precise identification of substrate binding and putative catalytic residues. Contrary to previous suggestions, the ec-ADL structures implicate S295 and H171 in base and acid catalysis, respectively. Furthermore, structural alignments of ec-ADL with other superfamily members suggest for the first time a large conformational movement of the flexible C3 loop (residues 287-303) in ec-ADL upon substrate binding and catalysis, resulting in its closure over the active site. This loop movement has been observed in other superfamily enzymes, and has been proposed to be essential for catalysis. The ADL catalytic mechanism is re-examined in light of the results presented here.  相似文献

This study aims at the optimisation of a microwave pretreatment for wheat straw solubilisation and anaerobic biodegradability. The maximum yield of methane production was obtained at 150 °C with an improvement of 28% compared to an untreated sample. In addition, at this temperature, the time to reach 80% of the methane volume obtained from untreated straw was about 35%. The study of ramp time and holding time at targeted temperature showed that they had no improvement effect. Thus, the best conditions are the highest heating rate for a final temperature 150 °C without any holding time. The reading of energy consumed by pretreatment and energy overproduced by pretreated samples showed that increasing tVS amount and heating rate led to a saving of energy consumption. Nevertheless, to obtain a positive energy balance, a microwave device should consume less than 2.65 kJ/gtVS.  相似文献
