In vivo synthesis of stigmasterol in Nicotiana tabacum

Six-day-old tobacco seedlings rapidly incorporated and metabolized exogenously supplied [4-¹⁴C]-sitosterol, but none of the radioactivity was recovered from stigmasterol. However, exogenously supplied [2-¹⁴C]-mevalonic acid was incorporated into both sitosterol and stigmasterol. Based on these results it is suggested that the biosynthetic pathway of stigmasterol is not via sitosterol but that both sterols have a common precursor.     

Visible fibrinolysis by endothelial cells: Effect of vitamins and sterols

We have succeeded in corroborating the enhancing effect of vitamin A, vitamin C, sitosterol and fucosterol on the fibrinolytic activity of endothelial cells. The assay system consisted of anin situ dissolution of a fibrin layer coated onto a culture dish, over which endothelial cells were grown in a culture medium containing 10 % serum. The dissolution was enhanced by the addition of these vitamins and phytosterols to the culture medium.To whom correspondence should be addressed.     

Heptatriacontan-4-one,tetratriacontanyl octacosanoate and other constituents from Pedalium murex

Two new compounds isolated from the fruits of Pedalium murex are characterized as heptatriacontan-4-one and tetratriacontanyl octacosanoate by spectral studies. Pentatriacontane, sitosterol, hexatriacontanoic acid, hentriacontanoic acid, ursolic acid and vanillin have also been isolated and identified.     

A reappraisal of sterol biosynthesis and metabolism in aphids

Aphids of Schizaphis graminum (Rondani) (biotype C) reared on its host-plant, Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench, sequestered campesterol, stigmasterol and sitosterol. Aphids reared for 72 hr on holidic diets supplemented with [4-¹⁴C]-sitosterol contained both [¹⁴C]-sitosterol and [¹⁴C]-cholesterol, indicating that these aphids are capable of dealkylation at C-24. When aphids were reared on artificial diets containing [2-¹⁴C]-mevalonic acid, no detectable amounts of radioactively labelled desmethyl sterols, nor metabolic intermediates in sterol synthesis (i.e. squalene, 2,3-oxidosqualene, 4,4-dimethyl and 4-monomethyl sterols) were found to accumulate in their tissues. The relevance of these findings to previous research suggesting the ability of aphids, via their symbiotes, to synthesize sterols is discussed.     

Dehydrodieugenol and its monomethyl ether from Virola carinata

The constituents of Virola carinata were established as dehydrodieugenol, its monomethyl ether and sitosterol.     

Three triterpenes and other terpenoids from Catha cassinoides

The investigation of stems and leaves of Catha cassinoides afforded, in addition to sitosterol, β-amyrin, ursolic acid, lup-20(29)-en-3β,30-diol and friedelin, three new pentacyclic triterpenes: 30-hydroxyfriedelan-3-one, 29-hydroxyfriedelan-3-one and 3-oxo-friedelan-29-oic acid. The structures ofthese were determined by spectral studies and correlations, and were confirmed by X-ray analysis of 29-hydroxyfriedelan-3-one acetate.     

A new compound, 21α-hydroxyfriedel-4(23)-en-3-one and other triterpenoids from Phyllanthus reticulatus

The petrol extracts of the stems and leaves of Phyllanthus reticulatus both gave friedelin and sitosterol, and that of the former also friedelan-3β-ol, glochidonol, 21α-hydroxyfriedelan-3-one and a new compound, which was proved to be 21α-hydroxyfriedel-4(23)-en-3-one. The ethanol extract of the stems yielded betulinic acid.
