The migratory direction in young passerine migrants is based on innate information, with the geomagnetic field and celestial rotation as references. To test whether the direction of celestial rotation is of importance, hand-raised pied flycatchers in Latvia were exposed during the premigratory period to a planetarium rotating in different directions. During autumn migration, when their orientation behavior was recorded in the local geomagnetic field in the absence of celestial cues, birds that had been exposed to a sky rotating in the natural direction showed a unimodal preference of their south-westerly migratory direction. Birds that had been exposed to a sky rotating in the reversed direction, in contrast, showed a bimodal preference of an axis south-west-north-east. Their behavior was similar to that of pied flycatchers that had been raised without access to celestial cues. In Latvia, the magnetic field alone allows only orientation along the migratory axis, and celestial rotation enables birds to select the correct end of this axis. Our findings show that the direction of rotation is of crucial importance: celestial rotation is effective only if the stars move in the natural direction.  相似文献

Traditionally, people have inhabited places with ready access to fresh water. Today, over 50% of the global population lives in urban areas, and water can be directed via tens of kilometres of pipelines. Still, however, a large part of the world''s population is directly dependent on access to natural freshwater sources. So how are inhabited places related to the location of freshwater bodies today? We present a high-resolution global analysis of how close present-day populations live to surface freshwater. We aim to increase the understanding of the relationship between inhabited places, distance to surface freshwater bodies, and climatic characteristics in different climate zones and administrative regions. Our results show that over 50% of the world''s population lives closer than 3 km to a surface freshwater body, and only 10% of the population lives further than 10 km away. There are, however, remarkable differences between administrative regions and climatic zones. Populations in Australia, Asia, and Europe live closest to water. Although populations in arid zones live furthest away from freshwater bodies in absolute terms, relatively speaking they live closest to water considering the limited number of freshwater bodies in those areas. Population distributions in arid zones show statistically significant relationships with a combination of climatic factors and distance to water, whilst in other zones there is no statistically significant relationship with distance to water. Global studies on development and climate adaptation can benefit from an improved understanding of these relationships between human populations and the distance to fresh water.  相似文献

Blooms of the toxic dinoflagellate, Karenia brevis, have had detrimental impacts on the coastal Gulf of Mexico for decades. Detection of Karenia brevis blooms uses an ecological approach based on anomalies derived from ocean color imagery. The same anomaly product used in Florida produces frequent false positives on the Texas coast. These failures occurred during wind-driven resuspension events. During these events resuspension of benthic algae significantly increases chlorophyll concentrations in the water, resulting in confusion with normal water column phytoplankton, such as Karenia. A method was developed to separate the resuspended chlorophyll from the water column chlorophyll, decreasing the false positives used with the detection method.  相似文献

Several explanations have been presented for the formation of lacustrine cyanobacteria blooms. These include elevated water temperature, nutrient enrichment, low N/P ratios, low light energy requirements, high pH and/or low carbon dioxide concentration, selective zooplankton grazing, excretion of compounds which suppress the growth of competing algae, and migration. The impact of the first four were studied in Lake Tuusulanjärvi, a eutrophic Finnish lake, using deterministic simulation. The study, which covered 15 years, included a sequence of cases on the recovery of the lake after the implementation of two restoration measures: aeration of the hypolimnion, and termination of municipal waste discharge, both of which were done during the study period. The focus was on Microcystis and Oscillatoria, and on the N-fixing cyanobacteria, Anabaena and Aphanizomenon. Eukaryotic phytoplankton were also included in the study. Monitoring data were used. The roles of the hypotheses were discussed, from the point of view of the utility of the information in water resources management.  相似文献

Somatic embryogenesis has already been used for Norway spruce (Picea abies (L.) Karst) embling production on a laboratory scale, but automation is needed to increase efficiency and reduce costs. One option to scale up production is mass production in bioreactors. In a series of experiments, a pro-embryogenic mass was propagated using Plantform temporary immersion system bioreactors, and the effect of different aeration cycles, support pad materials, and post-maturation treatments (rinsing and desiccation) on the embryo yield and embling survival after 4 to 6 mo in a greenhouse was tested. Three genotypes were used to test each treatment. The best aeration frequency was 20 min every 4 h, while a lower or higher frequency did not generally improve embryo production. Filter paper on plastic netting was the best support pad material in terms of usability and embryo production (varying from 177 ± 20 to 696 ± 109 per g pro-embryogenic mass). The separation of the embryos from the undeveloped cell mass by rinsing with sterile water resulted in reduced survival of the emblings. Desiccation treatment on nested plates with the embryos on the inner plate with or without filter paper improved their survival. Bioreactors were laborious to prepare, load, and clean. Improvements in embryo production can be achieved by optimizing the process, but bioreactors based on the requirements of somatic embryogenesis are needed to enable their use in the mass production of Norway spruce emblings.

The Paranoplocephla arctica complex (Cyclophyllidea, Anoplocephalidae), host-specific cestodes of collared lemmings Dicrostonyx, include two morphospecies P. arctica and P. alternata, whose taxonomical status now must be considered ambiguous. The genetic population structure and phylogeography of the P. arctica complex was studied from 83 individuals sampled throughout the Holarctic distribution range using 600 bp of the mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit I gene (COI). The mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) phylogeny divides the species complex into one main Nearctic and one main Palaearctic phylogroup, corresponding to the main phylogenetic division of the hosts. In the Palearctic phylogroup, the parasite clades correspond to the host clades although the parasites from Wrangel Island form an exception as the host on this island, D. groenlandicus, belongs to the Nearctic phylogroup. In the Nearctic, northern refugia beyond the ice limit of the Pleistocene glaciations are proposed for the hosts. All reconstructions of parasite phylogeny show a genetically differentiated population structure that in the Canadian Arctic lacks strict congruence between phylogeny and geography. The parasite phylogeny does not show complete congruence with host relationships, suggesting a history of colonization and secondary patterns of dispersal from Beringia into the Canadian Arctic, an event not proposed by the host phylogenies alone.  相似文献

Achieving global food security is one of the major challenges of the coming decades. In order to tackle future food security challenges we must understand the past. This study presents a historical analysis of global food availability, one of the key elements of food security. By calculating national level dietary energy supply and production for nine time steps during 1965–2005 we classify countries based on their food availability, food self-sufficiency and food trade. We also look at how diets have changed during this period with regard to supply of animal based calories. Our results show that food availability has increased substantially both in absolute and relative terms. The percentage of population living in countries with sufficient food supply (>2500 kcal/cap/d) has almost doubled from 33% in 1965 to 61% in 2005. The population living with critically low food supply (<2000 kcal/cap/d) has dropped from 52% to 3%. Largest improvements are seen in the MENA region, Latin America, China and Southeast Asia. Besides, the composition of diets has changed considerably within the study period: the world population living with high supply of animal source food (>15% of dietary energy supply) increased from 33% to over 50%. While food supply has increased globally, food self-sufficiency (domestic production>2500 kcal/cap/d) has not changed remarkably. In the beginning of the study period insufficient domestic production meant insufficient food supply, but in recent years the deficit has been increasingly compensated by rising food imports. This highlights the growing importance of food trade, either for food supply in importing countries or as a source of income for exporters. Our results provide a basis for understanding past global food system dynamics which, in turn, can benefit research on future food security.  相似文献

We have compared bacteriorhodopsin-based (alpha(2A)-AR(BR)) and rhodopsin-based (alpha(2A)-AR(R)) models of the human alpha(2A)-adrenengic receptor (alpha(2A)-AR) using both docking simulations and experimental receptor alkylation studies with chloroethylclonidine and 2-aminoethyl methanethiosulfonate hydrobromide. The results indicate that the alpha(2A)-AR(R) model provides a better explanation for ligand binding than does our alpha(2A)-AR(BR) model. Thus, we have made an extensive analysis of ligand binding to alpha(2A)-AR(R) and engineered mutant receptors using clonidine, para-aminoclonidine, oxymetazoline, 5-bromo-N-(4, 5-dihydro-1H-imidazol-2-yl)-6-quinoxalinamine (UK14,304), and norepinephrine as ligands. The representative docked ligand conformation was chosen using extensive docking simulations coupled with the identification of favorable interaction sites for chemical groups in the receptor. These ligand-protein complex studies provide a rational explanation at the atomic level for the experimentally observed binding affinities of each of these ligands to the alpha(2A)-adrenergic receptor.  相似文献
