The vegetative growth of Ulva lactuca was studied to determine if the growth rate of the alga is driven by infradian rhythmicity. The influence of temperature on the infradian rhythm of growth was also investigated. Discs of Ulva were grown in controlled laboratory conditions at different combinations of temperature (5, 10, 15, 20°С) and irradiance (40 and 60 μmol photons m?2 s?1) under 12 : 12 h light : dark cycles. The growth rates exhibited a rhythmic pattern with one major peak every 2 or 3 days. Growth at 5 or 10°С increased the prevalence of 3-day cycles and maintained U. lactuca in the vegetative growth stage. In contrast, growth at 15 or 20°С provoked a predominance of the 2-day cycle and induced reproduction. The 2- or 3-day cycles were combined in longer cycles having a period close to 6 days. We suppose that the 2-, 3- and 6-day rhythms of physiological processes are related to large-scale Rossby and Kelvin waves, which produce oscillations in the geomagnetic field and seawater temperature with the same periods. The predominance of 2-day or 3-day fluctuations of the geomagnetic field and temperature probably determine the prevalence of reproduction and vegetative growth, respectively, in Ulva.  相似文献

Fatty acid variations in symbiotic dinoflagellates from Okinawan corals   总被引:5,自引:0,他引:5
The fatty acid composition of polar lipids and triacylglycerols was determined in different morphophysiological types of symbiotic dinoflagellates (SD) isolated from the hydrocoral Millepora intricata and the scleractinian corals Pocillopora damicornis, Seriatopora caliendrum, Seriatopora hystrix and Stylophora pistillata from a fringing reef of Sesoko Island, Okinawa, Japan. The distribution of the fatty acids among the morphophysiologically distinct types of SD reported in these corals makes it possible to readily distinguish one type of SD from the other. Moreover, differences were found both in polar lipids and triacylglycerols. The polar lipids of SD from M. intricata showed a very distinctive fatty acid profile. A combination of large proportions of 18:4 (n-3), 18:5 (n-3), 22:5 (n-6), and 22:6 (n-3) and negligible amounts of 20:4 (n-6), and 20:5 (n-3) in SD from M. intricata was particularly noteworthy. The fatty acid profiles of SD from P. damicornis and SD isolated from S. caliendrum and S. hystrix differed in the proportion of 18:4 (n-3) and 22:6 (n-3). It is suggested that fatty acids might provide useful information on possible taxonomic differences among symbiotic dinoflagellates. It is assumed that biochemical differences can reflect the genetic diversity of the morphophysiological types of SD associated with several species of hermatypic corals from this region.  相似文献

The cell division and vegetative growth of the thalli of simply differentiated macroalgae with a diffuse growth type—Ulva pseudocurvata (Chlorophyta) and Porphyra umbilicalis (Rhodophyta)-have been studied under natural and laboratory conditions. For this purpose the mitotic index and growth rate of algae were measured over 18 days. A diurnal rhythm of the mitotic index was revealed: the minimal mitotic index was registered in morning and daylight hours (for U. pseudocurvata 1–4%, for P. umbilicalis 0.5–2%), in the afternoon the index grew and reached its maximum 1 hour before dark (for U. pseudocurvata 12%, for P. umbilicalis 7%), then it slowly decreased during the night. In the studied algal species 2–3-and 6-day rhythms of mitotic index and growth rate were found for the first time both under natural and laboratory conditions. With constant white light these rhythms persisted for 9 days, this confirms the endogenous regulation of these rhythmic variations.  相似文献

Ways, mechanisms, and responses of ontogenetic adaptation of reef-building corals to light are discussed on the basis of original and literature data. The possible ways of photoacclimation of corals within the range of tolerance to light are shown: (1) adaptation to bright light (>70% incident photosynthetic active radiation, PARs), (2) adaptation to moderate shade (50–10% PARs), and (3) adaptation to extremely low light (<5% PARs). In each of the ways, general and specific mechanisms and reactions are involved in photoacclimation of corals. Adaptive changes take place in plant (zooxanthellae) and animal (polyps) components of the symbiotic organism. They involve morphology, physiology, and biochemistry of colonial polyps and their zooxanthellae. During changes of the light regime, some adaptive reactions last several months and others occur within a few days. Some physiological and biochemical alterations occur as early as the next day after the light regime changes. The wide range of light tolerance of corals and a great number of mechanisms and reactions of photoacclimation allowing corals to adapt to bright and low light with minimum losses in their metabolic activity give grounds to classify them as a single ecological group of light- and shade-tolerant organisms.  相似文献

For the first time somatic spotlike formations of 1.5 mm in diameter and height up to 0.5 mm were revealed in thalli of the red alga Palmaria palmata reared in an aerated stirred culture. It was determined that some cortical cells of the thallus are able to divide in the periclinal and anticlinal directions forming spots. Deep freezing and subsequent thawing of thalli showed that the cortical cells of spots were meristematic cells. In certain conditions they enabled the formation of prolifications, which germinated plantlets. These clusters of meristem tissue in the cortical layer of cells of the thallus of P. palmata, which were formed in the culture as in nature, function as growth cells facilitating growth of thalli in thick and natural “planting material” formed upon thalli fragmenting after their freezing in the winter season.  相似文献

Modern data on competitive relationships and their role in the succession of natural and artificial algal communities are reviewed. The mechanisms of macroalgae competition and the factors that affect the competitive outcomes are considered. The conception of competitive interactions between seaweeds in the field and culture is suggested. (1) Competitive relationships are possible only between seaweeds which live together and are able to exchange signals. (2) Success in the competition for light is the basis for wins in the competition for space. (3) The competition for nutrients never results directly in the exclusion of the competitor from the community. It inhibits the competitor and allows the winner to overgrow, shade, act allelopathically, and to displace the inferior competitor in the community. (4) People, creating an artificial monodominant community, either increase the competitive potential of cultivated species by selection of growth conditions or exclude the competitors.  相似文献

The species composition and structure of algal fouling communities on the underwater artificial substrates at lobster farms in Nha Trang Bay (Vietnam) were studied for the first time. In total, 126 taxa (species and forms) of macroalgae (24% green, 16% brown, and 60% red), as well as eight species of cyanobacteria, were found. Depending on the area and quality of the substrate, fouling algae form polydominant turf communities, mono- and bidominant communities of crustose algae, or no specific communities. The flora of macroalgal fouling at lobster farms in Nha Trang Bay was similar in terms of its diversity and species composition to that of coral reefs in areas of the Indo-Pacific with a low level of pollution. This similarity might be due to the diversity and cleanness of the substrates (the absence of sediment on the surface of the underwater structures).  相似文献
