Enterotoxigenic reference strains of Staphylococcus aureus were cultivated in sterile whole and skim milk for 18 h at 37°G. Staphylococcal enterotoxin A, B, and C were detected directly in the milk by an enzyme linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA), sensitive down to 1 ng/ml. Enterotoxins in the range of 1 ng–20 µg/ml milk were detected without any concentration or extraction. Skim and whole milk were almost identical as medium for enterotoxin production. 相似文献

During the Norwegian Antarctic Expedition of 1984–1985, land parties worked in the area of Mühlig-Hofmannfjella and Gjelsvikfjella in Queen Maud Land (5° 20E, 1° 37W, 1000–1600 m a.s.l.). The nunataks in this area, which represents one of the climatic limits for terrestrial life on earth, is among those areas absorbing the highest quantity of shortwave radiation during a period of 24 h in summer. In spite of this the air temperature never, or very seldom, exceeds 0° C. The limiting factor for photosynthesis over most of the summer was water availability. Melt-water plays an important role in spring. During rest of the growth season, water from condensation is probably the most important water source for plants. On calm nights the rate of condensation during 6 h may reach 0.5 mm, which constitutes only 10%–30% of daily potential evapotranspiration. Plants situated in narrow clefts or shielded by stone blocks have the highest rate of potential photosynthesis. These locations are shielded from direct solar radiation most of the time, but the radiation from surrounding stone surfaces is higher than from the atmosphere and heat loss by turbulence is smaller than for exposed locations. Population densities and total phosphorus concentrations in samples from different lakes of south-eastern Norway were determined. In addition some transplant experiments with dilute phytoplankton populations were carried out. A laboratory batch culture method was used.The diatoms studied may be divided into three ecological groups based on their cell densities and total phosphorus concentrations in the samples. This classification was supported by the experimental results.
Cyclotella spp., Asterionella formosa and Tabellaria fenestrata did not grow or had low growth rates above pH 9. Synedra cf. acus and Fragilaria crontonensis had often high growth rates within the pH 9–10 range, but were not able to grow at pH values above 10. High pH-values had no effect on the growth rate of Oscillatoria.
Oscillatoria, Synedra and Stephanodiscus were severely growth-limited in filtered water from oligotrophic lakes. Maximum growth rates of all the populations studied were often obtained after addition of phosphate and chelated iron (FeEDTA) in combination to filtered water samples from oligotrophic/mesotrophic lakes. 相似文献

Such heterogeneity of ChAc is of particular interest in the context of its ultrastructural localization. A computer model of body mass and composition in relation to gross energy balance is constructed. The model is built using
conventional empirical physiological formulae rather than statistical or analytical mathematical techniques. The model is
applied to the Minnesota and other experiments and produces as good or better simulations of observed values of changes in
body weight than reported for other formulae or models. Alternative physiological mechanisms concerning metabolic adaptions
to starvation, changes in time activity budgets and the energy equivalents of weight loss offer equally good simulations of
experimental results. The present analysis highlights the survival value of a basal metabolic depression during starvation
and indicates an optimal body composition of 10% mobilizable fat for starvation survival for a 70 kg man. Proper quantification
of the effects of the physiological mechanisms involved depends on new experimental data, however. Long term continuous monitoring

Summary The development of somatic embryos in an embryogenic suspension culture ofPicea sitchensis was followed every day for two weeks after thawing from liquid nitrogen (LN2). Only a few cells, primarily located at the periphery of the embryonic region of the embryos, survived cryopreservation in LN2. Surviving cells were classified into two groups: embryogenic cells (EC) and non-embryogenic cells (NEC), based on their morphology and embryogenic competence. The dense cytoplasmic EC underwent organized growth and differentiation with first divisions occurring after 24 h, and embryo formation 6–8 days after thawing from LN2. No evidence of asymmetrical divisions or free-nuclear stages was found during somatic embryo formation. NEC had less dense cytoplasm with numerous small vacuoles. One to five days after thawing the NEC became progressively more vacuolated and elongated. Histological examination revealed no mitotic activity in NEC, and six days after thawing NECs were seen as single cells or unorganized cell aggregates. Two weeks after thawing the appearance of the cryopreserved cultures was comparable to that of the untreated cultures.Abbreviations EC

Primary Schistosoma mansoni single-sex infections in mice, i.e., either male only or female only, did not stimulate any detectable level of heterologous resistance to challenge with Fasciola hepatica after 22 to 76 days, while statistically significant resistance to a challenge with F. hepatica was demonstrated in the presence of patent mixed-sex S. mansoni infections. Simultaneous infections with S. mansoni and F. hepatica induced a statistically significant reduction in the number of schisto-some worms established, i.e., the burden being reduced by 40.1 and 43.9%, respectively. There was no reduction of the F. hepatica worm burden. Similar features could be observed with a time interval of 48 hr between the S. mansoni infection and the F. hepatica challenge, i.e., the schistosome burden being reduced by 34.2 and 45.6%, respectively. Furthermore, simultaneous infections with S. mansoni and F. hepatica induced a statistically significant reduction of the egg production capacity per paired female schistosome worm as compared with that of the S. mansoni control group.
