The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of Sahelian rainfall on the central European Sand Martin Riparia riparia population for the period 1986–1992. The studied population breeds along the River Tisza in Hungary and is one of the largest in central Europe. The changes in the population size did not show a significant relationship to Sahelian rainfall, but a large decrease in 1991 coincided with the drought in three Sahelian areas. The survival rates of adults had a significant relationship to the rainfall of the southern Sahel but not to the other two studied areas (northern Sahel, central Sudan). The model selection included this relationship and raised the possibility of predicting the adult survival rate in autumn for the following wintering season, using African rainfall data. The analysis showed a significant difference in the survival rates between the sexes, with that of the female being lower. Differences in the changes of the population size and adult survival rate showed the importance of the recruitment of adults, and this may depend mainly on the survival of juveniles.  相似文献

1. The increase of species richness with the area of the habitat sampled, that is the species–area relationship, and its temporal analogue, the species–time relationship (STR), are among the few general laws in ecology with strong conservation implications. However, these two scale‐dependent phenomena have rarely been considered together in biodiversity assessment, especially in freshwater systems. 2. We examined how the spatial scale of sampling influences STRs for a Central‐European stream fish assemblage (second‐order Bernecei stream, Hungary) using field survey data in two simulation‐based experiments. 3. In experiment one, we examined how increasing the number of channel units, such as riffles and pools (13 altogether), and the number of field surveys involved in the analyses (12 sampling occasions during 3 years), influence species richness. Complete nested curves were constructed to quantify how many species one observes in the community on average for a given number of sampling occasions at a given spatial scale. 4. In experiment two, we examined STRs for the Bernecei fish assemblage from a landscape perspective. Here, we evaluated a 10‐year reach level data set (2000–09) for the Bernecei stream and its recipient watercourse (third‐order Kemence stream) to complement results on experiment one and to explore the mechanisms behind the observed patterns in more detail. 5. Experiment one indicated the strong influence of the spatial scale of sampling on the accumulation of species richness, although time clearly had an additional effect. The simulation methodology advocated here helped to estimate the number of species in a diverse combination of spatial and temporal scale and, therefore, to determine how different scale combinations influence sampling sufficiency. 6. Experiment two revealed differences in STRs between the upstream (Bernecei) and downstream (Kemence) sites, with steeper curves for the downstream site. Equations of STR curves were within the range observed in other studies, predominantly from terrestrial systems. Assemblage composition data suggested that extinction–colonisation dynamics of rare, non‐resident (i.e. satellite) species influenced patterns in STRs. 7. Our results highlight that the determination of species richness can benefit from the joint consideration of spatial and temporal scales in biodiversity inventory surveys. Additionally, we reveal how our randomisation‐based methodology may help to quantify the scale dependency of diversity components (α, β, γ) in both space and time, which have critical importance in the applied context.  相似文献

Abstract.  1. Data in Braun et al .'s (2004) recent paper on size trends in ground beetles (Carabidae) are re-analysed, after re-classifying the species according to feeding categories.
2. When ground beetles are classified as predatory species, mixed feeders or herbivores, and evaluated separately, the size trends indicate group-specific differences. Most of these do not support the efficiency-specialisation hypothesis.
3. Taxonomic groups rarely fit into one ecological category and ecological analyses should explicitly consider this hurdle.  相似文献

The relationship between feather quality, estimated through the prevalence and intensity of feather holes, and the breeding performance and survival of the Barn Swallow Hirundo rustica was studied over a 5-year period. In addition, we present some indirect data on the role of chewing lice in producing the feather holes. The balanced distribution of feather holes (high prevalence, low aggregation) corresponds with the pattern of distribution of lice on colonial birds, and in the Barn Swallow. Feather holes were significantly and positively associated with the arrival dates of the birds, as both males and females with an increased number of feather holes started laying later. Females that survived the winter had significantly fewer holes than non-surviving females, whereas there was no difference in feather hole number between surviving and non-surviving males. Given that there was no association between the number of feather holes and body condition indices, except for the tail length of male Barn Swallows, we suggest that the negative effect of feather holes on the fitness of the birds is mainly apparent during periods of intensive locomotor activity, such as migration. Alternatively, if feather holes are an indicator of quality, those birds with a high intensity of feather holes may have been of poor quality. These birds may have been less able to cope with the environmental conditions, resulting in the lower survival and later arrival of the birds to the breeding grounds. The negative relationship between the length of the outermost tail feathers of males and the incidence of feather holes suggests that the tail is a condition-dependent secondary sexual characteristic.  相似文献

Effects of 3–15 krad 60Co gamma radiation on cereal seeds were investigated with regard to the frost hardiness of leaves of 5–7-day-old seedlings. Comparative studies were carried out on the gas-chromatographically determined distribution patterns of fatty acids in different pools (total fatty acid, total lipid, polar lipids) of a cold-resistant (cv. Mironowskaya 808) and a cold-sensitive (cv. Penjamo 62) cultivar of wheat (Triticum aestivum L.). Parallelism between fatty acid distribution pattern, empirical parameters suggested for quantitative measures of cold tolerance (the ratio unsat/sat and double-bond index), and the low-temperature behaviour of shoots grown from radiation treated seeds of ‘Penjamo 62’, was also examined. To monitor differences in the fatty acid syntheses of ‘Mironowskaya 808’and ‘Penjamo 62’, and to demonstrate radiation-induced changes in fatty acid turnover a [1–14C]-acetate incorporation technique was employed. The results of practical importance are: 1. A significant improvement in the frost-resistance of the cold-sensitive ‘Penjamo 62’variety could be achieved with 6–9 krad irradiation, the half-freeze-killing temperature dropping from ?6 to about ?18°C. 2. Freeze-hardiness, no matter whether inherited or gained, could be abolished by gamma irradiation with higher dose. The following conclusions of theoretical interest can be drawn: 1. Low-temperature behaviour of plant tissues is a dynamic property rather than a static one, not only the formation but also the breakdown of certain hydrocarbon chains may be of paramount relevance in cold-tolerance. 2. Not the linolenic (18:3) component, but rather the overall distribution pattern of the C18 family seems to correlate with low-temperature-responses of shoots. 3. Empirical parameters investigated do not provide reliable quantitative measures of the susceptibility to freeze (and cold-) injuries. 4. Changes in the syntheses of some key proteins (e.g. peroxidase, water-soluble proteins, etc.) may also be important in adaptation to low-temperature conditions.  相似文献

Genetic Control of Chromosome Pairing in Hexaploid Oats   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3
THE common oat, Arena sativa, is a hexaploid (2n=6x=42) whose chromosomes form exclusively bivalents during meiosis. The bivalents are formed by the pairing of exact homologues resulting in disomic inheritance. Gene duplications and triplications were revealed by early inheritance studies1 and homoeologous relationships of the three genomes were later supported by the good tolerance of deficiency for single and for pairs of chromosomes2.  相似文献

1. Habitat loss is a major driver of biodiversity decline worldwide. Temporary waterbodies are especially vulnerable because they are sensitive both to human impact and to climatic variations. Pond‐breeding amphibians are often dependent on temporary waterbodies for their reproduction, and hence are sensitive to loss of temporary ponds. 2. Here we present the results of a 5‐year study regarding the use of temporary aquatic habitats by amphibians in a hydrologically modified area of Eastern Europe (Romania). The annual number of aquatic habitats varied between 30 and ~120. Each aquatic habitat was characterised by a number of variables such as: ‘type’ (pond, drainage ditch and archaeological ditch), ‘hydroperiod’ (number of weeks the ponds were filled in a given year), ‘depth’ (cm), ‘area’ (m2) and the density of predatory insects (‘predation’). The turnover rate for each amphibian species for each wetland was calculated based on the pond occupancy. 3. Eight amphibian species were recorded from the aquatic habitats. Hydroperiod was the most important variable, positively influencing wetland use by amphibians and their reproductive success. Most species preferred drainage ditches for reproduction, and the reproductive success was highest in this habitat type every year. For most of the species, the local extinction rate was higher than the colonisation rate in the first 4 years, but the situation reversed in the last year of the study when wetland use by amphibians sharply increased because of high rainfall. 4. This study confirms the importance for amphibians of maintaining and managing aquatic habitat diversity at small spatial scales. Man‐made aquatic habitats such as drainage ditches may be important habitats for amphibians, and this should be considered in restoration activities.  相似文献

Aniline Blue containing Yeast and Mold agar, or Candida Isolation Agar (CIA, DIFCO) was evaluated and found successful in presumptive identification of 8 strains of laboratory cultures of Candida albicans based on the ability of C. albicans to grow and give characteristic fluorescence at 365 nm UV light. C. tropicalis (3 strains) was able to grow but did not fluoresce. The CIA medium was also useful for the recovery of C. albicans from inoculated milk and orange juice. The recovery was complete when peptone water was used as the diluent, however, when milk or orange juice were used as the diluent of the respective food, recovery was reduced to about 40%. No C. albicans was recovered in this study from hands of factory workers (dairy, brewery and canning) or from 12 types of foods tested as well as from food processing environment. More samplings are needed to further ascertain the role of C. albicans in Food Microbiology.  相似文献

1. Characterisation of biodiversity is typically based on taxonomic approaches, while much less is known about other related aspects. Functional trait diversity is one such component of biodiversity that has not been addressed rigorously in ecological research until recently. We tested the congruence between taxonomic‐ and trait‐based approaches, and examined how spatial configuration, local abiotic environmental factors and biotic effects interact to influence taxonomic‐ and trait‐based characterisation of freshwater fish assemblages. 2. Fish assemblage data were compiled for 124 lakes in southern Finland. Variance partitioning in both linear regression analyses and redundancy analysis was used to quantify the relative contribution of spatial and environmental variables to taxonomic and functional trait diversity and structure. Additionally, a null model analysis was used to test for the potential effects of interspecific segregation and biotic interactions on the co‐occurrence of species. 3. The species pool was relatively poor. However, trait‐based classification of species indicated that most species belonged to unique functional entities, which suggested low redundancy in species composition. Correlation analysis indicated a very strong relationship between species richness (SR) and the number of unique trait combinations (UTC). Ecoregion‐level heterogeneity in SR and UTC were well represented in a relatively small group of randomly selected lakes (c. 30 lakes). Multiple regressions indicated moderate roles for abiotic environmental variables (i.e. lake surface area, depth, total phosphorous, colour and pH) in determining SR, UTC and the distribution of single trait categories, whereas geographical location was not generally influential. 4. Redundancy analysis revealed similar patterns to those of diversity analyses for taxonomic and associated trait‐based structure, emphasising the effect of abiotic environmental variables and the negligible effect of geographical position. 5. Co‐occurrence analysis indicated significant checkerboard distribution at the whole assemblage level, but interspecific segregation proved to be of relatively minor importance in the constrained analyses, where species pair combinations within trait category groups were evaluated. 6. Our results suggest that taxonomic‐ and trait‐based patterns of boreal lake fish assemblages are strongly interrelated. Environmental filtering through the effects of local abiotic variables seems to have the most prominent role in determining trait‐based assemblage patterns among lakes, which may also be secondarily shaped by biotic interactions. 7. From the applied perspective, it may not necessarily matter whether traditional taxonomic or more novel trait‐based approaches are used in characterising spatial patterns in boreal fish assemblages. However, trait‐based approaches may provide complementary information which cannot be directly revealed by taxonomic data.  相似文献
