Abstract. Nutrient conservation in vegetation affects rates of litter decomposition and soil nutrient availability. Although resorption has been traditionally considered one of the most important plant strategies to conserve nutrients in temperate forests, long leaf life‐span and low nutrient requirements have been postulated as better indicators. We aimed at identifying nutrient conservation strategies within characteristic functional groups of NW Patagonian forests on Andisols. We analysed C‐, N‐, P‐, K‐ and lignin‐concentrations in mature and senescent leaves of ten native woody species within the functional groups: broad‐leaved deciduous species, broad‐leaved evergreens and conifers. We also examined mycorrhizal associations in all species. Nutrient concentration in mature leaves and N‐ resorption were higher in broad‐leaved deciduous species than in the other two functional groups. Conifers had low mature leaf nutrient concentrations, low N‐resorption and high lignin/N ratios in senescent leaves. P‐ and K‐resorptions did not differ among functional groups. Broad‐leaved evergreens exhibited a species‐dependent response. Nitrogen in mature leaves was positively correlated with both N resorption and soil N‐fertility. Despite the high P‐retention capacity of Andisols, N appeared to be the more limiting nutrient, with most species being proficient in resorbing N but not P. The presence of endomycorrhizae in all conifers and the broad‐leaved evergreen Maytenus boaria, ectomycorrhizae in all Nothofagus species (four deciduous, one evergreen), and cluster roots in the broad‐leaved evergreen Lomatia hirsuta, would be possibly explaining why P is less limiting than N in these forests. 相似文献

The Australian desert ant Melophorus bagoti often follows stereotypical routes through a cluttered landscape containing both distant panoramic views and obstacles (plants)
to navigate around. We created an artificial obstacle course for the ants between a feeder and their nest. Landmarks comprised
natural objects in the landscape such as logs, branches, and tussocks. Many ants travelled stereotypical routes home through
the obstacle course in training, threading repeatedly the same gaps in the landmarks. Manipulations altering the relations
between the landmarks and the surrounding panorama, however, affected the routes in two major ways. Both interchanging the
positions of landmarks (transpositions) and displacing the entire landmark set along with the starting position of the ants
(translations) (1) reduced the stereotypicality of the route, and (2) increased turns and meanders during travel. The ants
might have used the entire panorama in view-based travel, or the distal panorama might prime the identification and use of

Although neural activity often reflects the processing of external inputs, intrinsic fluctuations in activity have been observed throughout the brain. These may relate to patterns of self-generated thought that can occur while not performing goal-driven tasks. To understand the relationship between self-generated mental activity and intrinsic neural fluctuations, we developed the New York Cognition Questionnaire (NYC-Q) to assess the content and form of an individual''s experiences during the acquisition of resting-state fMRI data. The data were collected as a part of the Nathan Kline Rockland Enhanced sample. We decomposed NYC-Q scores using exploratory factor analysis and found that self-reported thoughts clustered into distinct dimensions of content (future related, past related, positive, negative, and social) and form (words, images, and specificity). We used these components to perform an individual difference analysis exploring how differences in the types of self-generated thoughts relate to whole brain measures of intrinsic brain activity (fractional amplitude of low frequency fluctuations, regional homogeneity, and degree centrality). We found patterns of self-generated thoughts related to changes that were distributed across a wide range of cortical areas. For example, individuals who reported greater imagery exhibited greater low frequency fluctuations in a region of perigenual cingulate cortex, a region that is known to participate in the so-called default-mode network. We also found certain forms of thought were associated with other areas, such as primary visual cortex, the insula, and the cerebellum. For example, individuals who reported greater future thought exhibited less homogeneous neural fluctuations in a region of lateral occipital cortex, a result that is consistent with the claim that particular types of self-generated thought depend on processes that are decoupled from sensory processes. These data provide evidence that self-generated thought is a heterogeneous category of experience and that studying its content can be helpful in understanding brain dynamics. 相似文献

The hallmark of fibrotic disorders is a highly cross-linked and dense collagen matrix, a property driven by the oxidative action of lysyl oxidase. Other fibrosis-associated proteins also contribute to the final collagen matrix properties, one of which is fibromodulin. Its interactions with collagen affect collagen cross-linking, packing, and fibril diameter. We investigated the possibility that a specific relationship exists between fibromodulin and lysyl oxidase, potentially imparting a specific collagen matrix phenotype. We mapped the fibromodulin-collagen interaction sites using the collagen II and III Toolkit peptide libraries. Fibromodulin interacted with the peptides containing the known collagen cross-linking sites and the MMP-1 cleavage site in collagens I and II. Interestingly, the interaction sites are closely aligned within the quarter-staggered collagen fibril, suggesting a multivalent interaction between fibromodulin and several collagen helices. Furthermore, we detected an interaction between fibromodulin and lysyl oxidase (a major collagen cross-linking enzyme) and mapped the interaction site to 12 N-terminal amino acids on fibromodulin. This interaction also increases the activity of lysyl oxidase. Together, the data suggest a fibromodulin-modulated collagen cross-linking mechanism where fibromodulin binds to a specific part of the collagen domain and also forms a complex with lysyl oxidase, targeting the enzyme toward specific cross-linking sites. 相似文献

Summary [3H]-20-hydroxyecdysone ([3H]-20E) injected intoAmblyomma hebraeum females 7 days before the beginning of oviposition,viz. at the beginning of vitellogenesis, was converted to 3 polar peaks of unknown nature called 1, 2 and 3, and to apolar conjugates AP1, AP2 and AP3. AP2 have the same retention times as the esters of 20E with long chain fatty acids described inOrnithodoros moubata (Diehl et al. 1985). However, principally unmetabolized 20E was incorporated into the ovaries, and 16% of the injected labelling was recovered in the eggs, 3/4 being free 20E. When 20E was injected during oviposition, it was not converted to the polar products but only to the apolar products. At this time, 76% of the total radiolabel injected accumulated in the egg-batch, principally in the form of free unmetabolized 20E.After injection of [3H]-ecdysone (3H]-E), the three polar metabolites 1, 2 and 3, probably 20-deoxy homologues of 1, 2 and 3 described above were always produced irrespective of the time of injection. In addition, E was metabolized to 20E and to the apolar conjugates AP1, AP2, and AP3. E, 20E and peak 2 were incorporated into the ovary within the first day after injection. These 3 compounds were found in freshly laid eggs in variable proportions, the quantity of E decreasing with time while 20E and peak 2 increased. At the end of oviposition, ca. 60% of the injected radiolabel had been incorporated into the eggs. Apolar products and polar metabolites accumulating in the body were apparently not used as a source of free hormone for the eggs.Our results with tritiated ecdysteroids confirm our data concerning endogenous ecdysteroids of the eggs ofA. hebraeum (Connat et al. 1985). This species, in contrast to 2 other female ticks,Ornithodoros moubata andBoophilus microplus, incorporates free E and 20E instead of ecdysteroid conjugates into its eggs. We estimate the active part of cytochrome P-450, which is involved in a special substrate transformation, by measuring the initial change of the production rate as a function of the relaxation transitions between two different steady states of the reaction cycle of cytochrome P-450 using the light-reversibility of the carbon monoxide inhibition. The kinetic data of such relaxations are interpreted within a model cycle, which reduces the reaction cycle to three steps. The estimation of the rate constant of the first reduction step, derived from model simulation of the production rate, is confirmed by independent experimental study of the reduction kinetics.An application of our model to the O-deethylation of 7-ethoxycoumarin reveals that — in a time average — 10%–15% of the spectroscopically detectable cytochrome P-450 is involved in that transformation.Abbreviations Cyt.
