Evaluation of the relationships between muscle structure and digging function in fossorial species is limited. Badgers and other fossorial specialists are expected to have massive forelimb muscles with long fascicles capable of substantial shortening for high power and applying high out‐force to the substrate. To explore this hypothesis, we quantified muscle architecture in the thoracic limb of the American badger (Taxidea taxus) and estimated the force, power, and joint torque of its intrinsic musculature in relation to the use of scratch‐digging behavior. Architectural properties measured were muscle mass, belly length, fascicle length, pennation angle, and physiological cross‐sectional area. Badgers possess hypertrophied shoulder flexors/humeral retractors, elbow extensors, and digital flexors. The triceps brachii is particularly massive and has long fascicles with little pennation, muscle architecture consistent with substantial shortening capability, and high power. A unique feature of badgers is that, in addition to elbow joint extension, two biarticular heads (long and medial) of the triceps are capable of applying high torques to the shoulder joint to facilitate retraction of the forelimb throughout the power stroke. The massive and complex digital flexors show relatively greater pennation and shorter fascicle lengths than the triceps brachii, as well as compartmentalization of muscle heads to accentuate both force production and range of shortening during flexion of the carpus and digits. Muscles of most functional groups exhibit some degree of specialization for high force production and are important for stabilizing the shoulder, elbow, and carpal joints against high limb forces generated during powerful digging motions. Overall, our findings support the hypothesis and indicate that forelimb muscle architecture is consistent with specializations for scratch‐digging. Quantified muscle properties in the American badger serve as a comparator to evaluate the range of diversity in muscle structure and contractile function that exists in mammals specialized for fossorial habits. We sequenced the small subunit rDNA and internal transcribed spacer region of Gracilariaceae from the tropical Atlantic and Pacific, with emphasis on flattened or compressed species. Sequence comparisons confirmed three main lineages of Gracilariaceae: Curdiea/Melanthalia, Gracilariopsis/Gracilariophila, and Gracilaria. The Curdiea/Melanthalia diverged early in the family. Gracilariopsis was paraphyletic, because at least one Gracilariophila species evolved from it. The Atlantic Gracilariopsis were monophyletic and separated from the Pacific lineages. The Gracilaria included all species referable to its own species and to Hydropuntia, which was paraphyletic, formed by distantly related lineages. The new combination Gracilaria pauciramosa (N. Rodríguez Ríos) Bellorin, M. C. Oliveira et E. C. Oliveira is proposed for Polycavernosa pauciramosa N. Rodríguez Ríos. Recognition of subgenera within Gracilaria, based on spermatangial arrangement, was not supported. Instead, infrageneric groups were delineated by geographic origins and combinations of reproductive characters. Most Pacific species with either “textorii” or “verrucosa” type spermatangia were deeply separated from Atlantic species. Within the Atlantic Gracilaria, a lineage encompassing mostly tropical cylindrical species with “henriquesiana” type spermatangia and distinctive cystocarp anatomy was recognized. A lineage was also retrieved for cold water stringy species with verrucosa type spermatangia. Several species from the western Atlantic are closely related to Gracilaria tikvahiae McLachlan with nearly identical morphology. On the other hand, most flattened species from the tropical Atlantic were closely related despite their diverse morphologies. The interpretation of our data in addition to the literature indicates that more populations from the Indo‐Pacific must be studied before a general picture of Gracilariaceae evolution can be framed.

Zusammenfassung
Chilonycteris rubiginosa erzeugt in allen Orientierungsituationen dreiteilige Ortungslaute.
Echolocation by the bat Chilonycteris rubiginosa
Summary Chilonycteris rubiginosa (CR) produces tripartite ultrasonic sounds in all orientation situations. During the first part the frequency rises by 1–2 kHz. The following middle part has a constant frequency of about 57–57,6 kHz. In the terminal part the frequency decreases by about 8 kHz. The sounds are emitted as a sequence of groups of sounds. In flight they produce per wingbeat one group of sounds at a repetition rate of 10–11 Hz. In free flight CR emits groups of 2 sounds of about 17–23 msec duration. During the approach landing bats emit groups consisting of an increasing number of sounds of decreasing duration. During the terminal phase the group is longer in duration and consists of many short sounds.Flying CR lower the frequency of the middle part by an amount which compensates for Doppler shifts caused by the flight velocity. The frequency heard by the bats is, thus, always kept constant and equal to a frequency which is about 100–150 Hz above the medium frequency emitted before the flight. CR shows head and ear movements. The ear movements are correlated to the sound emission.

The sessile (Quercus petraea [Matt.] Liebl.) and pedunculate (Quercus robur L.) oaks are two closely related species having a wide sympatric distribution over Europe. Under natural conditions, they frequently form mixed forests, where hybridization is suspected to occur. In this paper, two different approaches have been applied to the study of the mating system and the interspecific gene flow in a mixed stand formed by the two species. The mating systems of both species have been studied separately by means of the mixed-mating model. The relative contribution of the parental species to the progenies have been estimated with two different methods. The first uses the admixture model. The second is an extension of the mixed-mating model and subdivides the outcrossing rate into intra- and interspecific components. The two species were almost completely outcrossing. This high level of outcrossing and interspecific gene flow could play an important role in the maintenance of the genetic diversity in these long-lived forest tree species. The contribution of the sessile oak to the pedunculate oak progenies varied from 17% to 48%. In contrast, ovules of sessile oak trees appear to be preferentially fertilized by other extreme sessile genotypes. We suggest that interspecific and directional gene flow was responsible for such patterns. Pedunculate oak is considered as a pioneer species and is progressively replaced by sessile oak. Our present findings add a further genetic component to this succession scheme, suggesting that unidirectional gene flow reinforces succession between the two species.

Abstract. 20 alluvial forest stands of different ages along the river Rhine in central Alsace, France, are described. A natural complex landscape occurs which is formed by erosion activity of the river. Recent human impact (canal construction, cutting) has affected river hydrology: flooding is eliminated over large areas and the underground water levels are stabilized. The forest vegetation varies in species diversity and structure, from young pioneer to older, mid-successional forests. The forests were classified into four associations: Salici-Populetum nigrae, Ligustro-Populetum nigrae, Fraxino-Populetum albae and Querco-Ulmetum minoris. The first three communities are ‘softwood’ because of the dominance of Salix and Populus, the fourth, dominated by Quercus robur, Fraxinus excelsior and Ulmus minor, is ‘hardwood’. Differences in structure, species composition and diversity in 10 widely varying stands in 30-yr and 150-yr old forests are quantified and interpreted in relation to the processes and gradients (moisture and texture) involved. A model of forest succession is developed as follows:
- 1 Whatever the topographic level, Salix and Populus species are the most competitive in colonizing bare sediments.
- 2 Under natural conditions, pioneer softwoods are generally replaced by hardwoods in less than 100 yr.
- 3 Old Querco-Ulmetum is basically the terminal stage of the alluvial succession.
- 4 Old softwood forests result from an interruption of the natural course of succession. Softwoods may be an intermediate or late-successional phase depending on the interruption.
- 5 Successional processes change according to hydrological and edaphic gradients.
- 6 Allogenic processes of flooding are fundamental in the space-time species pattern.
- 7 Allogenic processes are responsible for the high species and community diversity.

1. | Echolocating bats (Eptesicus fuscus) were trained to discriminate between simulated targets consisting of one or two echo-wavefronts with internal time delays of up to 100 s. Spectral and temporal properties and total signal energy of the targets were evaluated and predictions for performances of bats derived from receiver models were compared with measured performances. |
2. | Eptesicus fuscus was able to discriminate a one-wavefront target from two-wavefront targets with distinct internal time delays (12 s, 32–40 s and 52–100 s). Performance was not affected by changes in total signal energy. Bats also successfully discriminated between two-wavefront targets with different internal time delays. |
3. | Performance predicted from differences in total energy between targets did not match the measured performance, indicating that bats did not rely on total echo energy. This finding is also supported by the behavioral data. Performance predicted from spectral and temporal receiver models both matched the measured performance and, therefore, neither one of these models can be favored over the other. |
4. | The behavioral data suggest that Eptesicus fuscus did not transform echo information into estimates of target range separation and, therefore, did not perceive the two wavefronts of each simulated two-wavefront echo as two separate targets. |

Population dynamics can be influenced by physical and biological factors, particularly in stressful environments. Introduced species usually have great physiological plasticity, resulting in populations with different traits. Undaria pinnatifida, a macroalga originally described from northeast Asia, was introduced in Northern Patagonia, Argentina (San Matías Gulf) around 2010. To describe the spatio-temporal variability in population structure and morphometry of U. pinnatifida, we conducted monthly field samplings for 2 years at the intertidal area of two contrasting sites in the San Matías Gulf. Individuals of U. pinnatifida were classified by developmental stage, and their morpho-gravimetric variables were measured. In both intertidal sites juveniles were found in higher proportion during austral autumn and grew and matured during the autumn-winter months (from May onwards), and individuals senesced during early austral summer (December and January). Conversely, density and biomass were largely different between sites, and individuals showed slight morphological variability between sites. Environmental (e.g., nutrient concentration, available substrate) and biological factors (e.g., facilitation, competition) may explain the observed differences. Since there is not a macroalga with U. pinnatifida morphometrical characteristics in the intertidal environments of San Matías Gulf, studying this recent introduction gives us a better understanding of its potential ecological effects.
