In laboratory experiments, 11 selected carboxylic acids were tested to determine which part of the sinapic acid molecule is responsible for deterring cabbage root fly from laying its eggs on otherwise-acceptable cauliflower host-plants. The deterrent effect was only obtained with compounds containing at least one carboxylic group in the molecule. Hence, the aliphatic acids were as deterrent as the aromatic acids to the fly and all the carboxylic acids were as deterrent as sinapic acid, reducing oviposition by > 50%. The inclusion of two carboxylic groups in the molecule, (e.g. phthalic acid and oxalic acid) did not increase the deterrent effect observed with sinapic acid. Some of the long chain fatty acids, with low volatility, low water solubility and thus greater persistence, offer practical opportunities for deterring Delia radicurn from laying its eggs on plants in the field.  相似文献

The effects of first generation carrot fly larval damage on chlorogenic acid concentration in carrots was investigated in a field experiment at Wellesbourne in 1985. In a separate experiment carrots grown in the absence of a resident population of carrot fly were also analysed for chlorogenic acid; these carrots maintained low concentrations of chlorogenic acid through the summer and autumn until low ground temperatures occurred from November to January. The relationship between chlorogenic acid concentration and damage by the first generation of carrot fly was described by a similar model to the one derived previously for late-generation damage but without the cultivar dependence. This may have been because first generation damage takes place in mid-summer when soil temperature is not sufficiently low for differential chlorogenic acid production by carrot cultivars. The model supports the hypothesis that carrot fly damage increases chlorogenic acid production which subsequently encourages further attack. The increase in acid production due to the low winter temperature may be the mechanism which, in turn, induced a differential cultivar response in carrots harvested during the winter.  相似文献

Growth and production of the temperate C4 species Cyperus longusL. was measured throughout a growing season in an establishedplot in Eastern Ireland. The maximum standing live biomass reachedwas 2·5 kg m–2. Estimates of unit leaf rate (ULR)and leaf area index (LAI) were made. The product of these quantitiesgave the crop growth rate (CGR) each week. C. longus was foundto maintain high values of LAI throughout the summer, with amaximum value of about 13 in early August. CGR reached a peakin early July. The optimum LAI was 11·6. Temperaturesat five levels in the plant canopy, and the amount of solarradiation intercepted by the canopy were measured continuouslyduring the summer. The mean daily rate of leaf extension waspositively correlated with the mean daily air temperature abovethe canopy but the temperature coefficient of the process waslow compared with other temperate species. The percentage ofsolar radiation intercepted by the canopy increased rapidlyin early summer, and canopy closure had occurred by mid-June.Rates of net photosynthesis were measured on young and old leafmaterial in situ at the time of peak LAI. In young leaves themaximum rates of net photosynthesis were higher than those publishedfor a range of temperate C3 species, but similar to those foundin another temperate C4 species, Spartina townsendii. Regulation of Electrogenic Pumping in Barley by pH and ATP   总被引:4,自引:1,他引:3  
The relationship of the electrogenic pump to the ATP concentrationin barley roots was examined. Excision, salt accumulation andchanges in temperature produced changes in the ATP concentrationwhich did not correlate with changes in membrane potential (m).Illumination of seedlings prior to excision of the root elevatedthe ATP level and caused m to hyperpolarize. Metabolic inhibitionby sodium azide resulted in a fall in ATP concentration andmembrane depolarization. With treatment in azide for longerthan 10 min there was a linear relationship between ATP concentrationand m. Time-courses of the effects of azide and carbon monoxideshowed that this relationship did not hold at short treatmenttimes because the ATP concentration fell more rapidly than thedecay of m. Application of butyrate or fusicoccin produced littleor no change in the ATP concentration but both caused significantchanges in m. The effects on m of butyrate, fusicoccin, external pH and metabolicinhibitors were considered to be consistent with regulationof electrogenic pumping by cytoplasmic pH. ABSTRACT.
  • 1 Emergence of cabbage root fly, Delia radicum (L.), from overwintering populations of puparia collected from twenty-one sites in south-west Lancashire, was extremely variable.
  • 2 The patterns of emergence indicated that there were two extreme biotypes, one with early- and the other with late-emerging flies. There was also evidence of an intermediate biotype, tending more to early than to late emergence.
  • 3 This gradient of biotypes, or clinal divergence, was maintained by populations breeding at different times and by females mating close to their sites of emergence. Non-dispersive females then perpetuated their genotype within their own locality.
  • 4 The time of emergence was not obviously associated with the type of host-crop on which larvae had developed.
  • 5 The late-emerging biotype was most prevalent around Halsall. The minimum distance between populations of the late- and the early-emerging biotypes was 16 km. 20 km south-east from Halsall only half of the fly population was early-emerging, possibly a result of a displacement of the Halsall biotype by the prevailing NW wind.
  • 6 Regional-based forecasts will need to take into account the emergence characteristics of the populations to predict the peak periods of cabbage root fly activity adequately in south-west Lancashire and other areas where emergence patterns differ.

Eleven growth substances were tested for their bud producing capacity in Funaria hygrometrica. IAA and gibberellic acid showed no response, neither did inositol, abscisic acid and adenine. The cytokinins: benzylaminopurine, kinetin and mercaptopurine showed a quantitative relationship while methylaminopurine did not. When different amounts of abscisic acid were added together with 10 μg kinetin (which gave maximal production of buds), there existed a linear relationship between reduction in buds and abscisic acid added. Results are obtained in two weeks and it is therefore a fairly quick method for assaying certain cytokinin and also abscisic acid.  相似文献

SYNOPSIS. Tetrahymena pyriformis syngen 1, mating type II, (optimal growth temperature ∼ 37 C) ordinarily dies out in 5-14 days at 0-5 C. Dying cells were lumpy, suggesting membrane damage. By supplying crude soy lecithin, survival at 0-5 C was prolonged (after growth in peptone-yeast-dextrin) to at least 22 weeks. Crude soy sterols or sitosterol or stigmasterol, and antioxidant, e.g., Ionox 330 or ascorbylpalmitate, permitted survival of cells in suspension or in growth media for at least 16-22 weeks. These sterols are known to protect against triparanol toxicity, which suggested that triparanol, which blocks cholesterol synthesis in higher animals, might enhance cold-induced injury. Triparanol was more toxic at 0–5 than at 28 C for cell suspensions and cells in growth medium; this toxicity was annulled by crude soy lecithin or β-sitosterol, the only phytosterol tested. The synthetic medium intended as a control on the crude media became toxic at 0–5 C. Protection against cold damage is discussed as a means of elucidating the role of sterols—especially phytosterols—and other lipids in maintaining the integrity of the ciliate cell membrane.  相似文献
