Marsh vegetation plays an important role in trophic ecology of estuaries. Once broken down to detritus, it is an important food source for manyorganisms. In Atlantic Coast marshes, the reed Phragmites australis hasbeen invading many areas once dominated by smooth cordgrass, Spartina alterniflora. In this study we evaluated the growth of and trophictransfer of metals to estuarine invertebrates when fed diets of detritus fromthese different plant species. Decaying leaves from populations of Phragmites, natural Spartina, and restored Spartina from boththe Hackensack Meadowlands, New Jersey, and the more pristineAccabonac Harbor of East Hampton, New York, were collected from themarsh surface in the spring. Decaying leaves were pureed and fed to thefiddler crabs Uca pugnax and U. pugilator, and to the grassshrimp Palaemonetes pugio. In fiddler crabs we monitored limbregeneration, molting and weight. U. pugilator regenerated limbs andmolted equally well on all six diets. Most of the U. pugnax arrestedgrowth midway through regeneration on all 6 diets. A repeat experimentwith smaller crabs, which did complete the process, found no consistentdifferences among the six diets and control food, although control food andPhragmites detritus had higher N concentrations than the Spartinadetritus. Grass shrimp fed all six diets did not survive beyond 3 weeks. Inanother experiment using HM sediments from each vegetation type(containing detritus, meiofauna, and microflora), survival was equally highamong treatments and the shrimp fed sediments from the restored Spartina site or control food grew better than those fed sediments fromthe Phragmites or natural Spartina sites. Although metalconcentrations in detritus varied between sites and plant species, the crabsof each group did not differ in metal concentrations after the feedingexperiment. Our data do not support the general assumption that Phragmites leaf detritus is of poorer nutritional quality than Spartinaalterniflora leaf detritus to estuarine consumers.  相似文献

Fish use of a mangrove habitat was studied in a small mangrove forest on the West coast of Madagascar. A sand bar near the inlet retains water in parts of the channel (pools) at low tide. Fishes in four of these pools were examined daily at all phases of the tidal cycle for 3 weeks using underwater visual census. During week 1, fishes were diverse and abundant in all pools: the dominant species were cardinalfish (related to Apogon lateralis); monos, Monodactylus argenteus; black spotted snappers, Lutjanus ehrenbergi; double bar bream, Acanthopagrus bifasciatus; emperors, Lethrinus lentjan and L. sp., surgeon fish, Acanthurus nigricauda; red-lined sweetlips, Plectorhinchus plagiodesmis; and butterflyfish, Chaetodon kleini. Some species were more abundant in shaded pools; others in more open pools. During week 2 a dramatic difference was noted: the only fishes found were schools of cardinalfish and one moray eel. This week had neap tides, with high tides in the morning and low tides in the afternoon. As the week progressed and during week 3 (spring tides), fishes slowly repopulated the habitat and diversity increased. Monos, absent in week 2, now had increasing numbers of small individuals. While large emperors were scarce, small individuals appeared. The larger butterflyfish and surgeonfish seen in week 1 were replaced by small ones during week 3. Species that had been rare in week 1 were more abundant, including pipefish and small barracudas. While species richness increased during week 3, the community was strikingly different from that seen 2 weeks earlier. Only Pool 1, closest to the entrance, recovered its original species richness. Abundance was much lower than in week 1. Our snapshot study apparently captured a time when older juveniles left the mangrove forest and smaller fishes recruited into it. Utilization of this habitat will likely vary throughout the year depending on the reproductive cycle of the different species whose juveniles utilize it. Longer studies are needed to learn about cycles in fish use of the mangroves.  相似文献

Invasion by Phragmites australis into tidal marshes previously dominated by Spartina alterniflora is viewed as a serious environmental threat along the Atlantic coast of the US, but little is known about the relative habitat value of the two plants for most estuarine species. This study was designed to investigate behavioral responses, in the laboratory, of three species to the two plants. Fiddler crabs, Uca pugnax, grass shrimp, Palaemonetes pugio, and larval mummichogs (killifish), Fundulus heteroclitus were introduced into aquaria with a bare area, an area with dead Phragmites stems, and an area with dead Spartina stems. All species distributed themselves equally between the Spartina and the Phragmites. The behavior of larval mummichogs in the tanks with predators was observed. In the presence and absence of stems, they utilized the surface of the water as a refuge, as well as the stems, when present. This behavior was equally as effective as being among the stems in promoting larval survival. In microcosms with blocks of marsh with living plants, fiddler crabs and grass shrimp again did not show a preference for either species of plant, while juvenile and adult mummichogs were not consistent. Small fish chose Spartina when in the small microcosm and had no preference in the large one. Large fish chose Spartina in the small microcosm and Phragmites in the large one. Predation by adult mummichogs on grass shrimp was comparable in Spartina and Phragmites microcosms, and predation on tethered shrimp was equivalent in adjacent Spartina and Phragmites marshes in the field.  相似文献

The distribution of radioactive RNA and RNA precursors in the goldfish optic tecta following intraocular injection of 3H-uridine has been studied during various stages of optic nerve regeneration. 3H-uridine was injected into the posterior chamber of the right eye 17, 30, or 60 days after both optic nerves were crushed. Fish were sacrificed at time intervals ranging from 0.5 to 21 days after injection. One day prior to sacrificing, 14C-proline was also injected into the right eye as a marker of fast axonal protein transport. Seventeen to 23 days after crushing, the approximate time of nerve reconnection, the amount of radioactive RNA appearing in the left optic tectum was increased by more than ten times control values. Approximately 30 days after crushing the nerve, when the reconnected nerve is maturing, RNA values were still elevated, but significantly decreased from the earlier stage. By 60 days after crushing the optic nerve, the amounts of RNA in the left tectum was close to normal. Evidence suggesting that, at least, some of the radioactive RNA in the tectum originated from RNA transported along optic axons rather than from RNA synthesized locally in the tectum was provided by autoradiographic experiments. Autoradiograms of paraffin sections taken from the goldfish optic tecta after the intraocular injection of 3H-uridine showed a distribution of grains in a linear pattern, suggesting a distribution over the incoming fibers during the reconnection stage of regeneration. Electron microscopic autoradiography of glutaraldehyde fixed epoxy sections confirmed that a significant number of grains (shown to be 3H-RNA) were, in fact, over regenerating optic axons. Intracranial injection of 3H-uridine, during the same stage of regeneration, on the other hand, resulted in a distribution of grains, specifically over cell perikarya. These experiments suggest that during the reconnection phase of nerve regeneration, large amounts of RNA may be carried within regenerating optic axons as they enter the optic tectum.  相似文献

We studied the behaviors of four species of sympatric fiddler crabs on Kaledupa Island, Indonesia. Species differences in activity level, grooming, burrowing and feeding were related to their habitat and food. Uca chlorophthalmus, living in muddy mangrove areas, were inactive and spent most of the time feeding in place. Females fed 50% faster than males and spent more time feeding. U. vocans was the dominant species at the beach in silty sand and was very active. Its feeding rate was about twice that of the former species, females fed more rapidly than males, and many crabs of both sexes fed in droves at the water’s edge during ebb tides. During ebb tides, they spent most of their time feeding, while at flood tide they engaged in a greater variety of activities, including burrow maintenance. They frequently walked while feeding and interacted aggressively. U. tetragonon lived in a pebbly band along one edge of the beach, by a quay. Their feeding rate was comparable in both sexes and slower than that of U. vocans; they fed largely on filamentous algae growing on the quay, which provides better food, and fed faster during flood tide than ebb tide. They spent more time in waving and other sex-related activities, and were seldom aggressive, except during the week of the full moon. Burrowing activities included placing excavated mud balls some distance away from their burrows and re-arranging them. U. dussumieri inhabited the other end of the beach in muddier substrate. They did not have sex differences in feeding rates and their rate of scooping food into their mouths was slow, but feeding claws made multiple pinches of the substrate, thus accumulating more material in each clawful of food.  相似文献

When F. heteroclitus embryos were exposed to inorganic mercury at concentrations of 0.03 or 0.1 mg/1 at the early blastula stage, the percentage of successful axis formation was reduced and a significant proportion of embryos developed cyclopia or intermediate conditions leading to cyclopia. Treatment at the late blastula stage reduced the severity of the defects. Embryos which developed in lead at concentrations of 1 and 10 mg/1 were normal in appearance until hatching, at which time they exhibited lordosis or were unable to uncurl from the position they had while still inside the chorion. No significant effects of cadmium at concentrations up to 10 mg/1 were noted.  相似文献
