- Assemblages of insect herbivores are structured by plant traits such as nutrient content, secondary metabolites, physical traits, and phenology. Many of these traits are phylogenetically conserved, implying a decrease in trait similarity with increasing phylogenetic distance of the host plant taxa. Thus, a metric of phylogenetic distances and relationships can be considered a proxy for phylogenetically conserved plant traits and used to predict variation in herbivorous insect assemblages among co‐occurring plant species.
- Using a Holarctic dataset of exposed‐feeding and shelter‐building caterpillars, we aimed at showing how phylogenetic relationships among host plants explain compositional changes and characteristics of herbivore assemblages.
- Our plant–caterpillar network data derived from plot‐based samplings at three different continents included >28,000 individual caterpillar–plant interactions. We tested whether increasing phylogenetic distance of the host plants leads to a decrease in caterpillar assemblage overlap. We further investigated to what degree phylogenetic isolation of a host tree species within the local community explains abundance, density, richness, and mean specialization of its associated caterpillar assemblage.
- The overlap of caterpillar assemblages decreased with increasing phylogenetic distance among the host tree species. Phylogenetic isolation of a host plant within the local plant community was correlated with lower richness and mean specialization of the associated caterpillar assemblages. Phylogenetic isolation had no effect on caterpillar abundance or density. The effects of plant phylogeny were consistent across exposed‐feeding and shelter‐building caterpillars.
- Our study reveals that distance metrics obtained from host plant phylogeny are useful predictors to explain compositional turnover among hosts and host‐specific variations in richness and mean specialization of associated insect herbivore assemblages in temperate broadleaf forests. As phylogenetic information of plant communities is becoming increasingly available, further large‐scale studies are needed to investigate to what degree plant phylogeny structures herbivore assemblages in other biomes and ecosystems.

The development of spinal cord supports (bony thickenings which extend into the vertebral canal of vertebrae) in primitive (Salamandrella keyserlingii) and derived (Lissotriton vulgaris) salamanders were described. The spinal cord supports develop as the protuberances of periostal bone of the neural arches in the anteroproximal part of the septal collagenous fibers which connect a transverse myoseptum with the notochord and spinal cord, in the septal bundle inside the vertebral canal. Spinal cord supports were also found in some teleostean (Salmo salar, Oncorhynchus mykiss) and dipnoan (Protopterus sp.) fishes. The absence of the spinal cord supports in vertebrates with cartilaginous vertebrae (lampreys, chondrichthyan, and chondrostean fishes) corresponds to the fact that the spinal cord supports are bone structures. The absence of the spinal cord supports in frogs correlates with the lack of the well developed septal bundles inside the vertebral canal. The spinal cord supports are, presumably, a synapomorphic character for salamanders which originated independently of those observed in teleostean and dipnoan fishes. J. Four monoepitopic MAPs (MAP A, B, C and E) and one bis-diepitopic MAP B-E derived fromthe primary sequence of Schistosoma mansoni glyceraldehyde 3-phosphate dehydrogenase, previously tested in BALB/c mice, were examined for their immunogenicity and protective capacity in C57BL/6 mice. Despite multimerization into MAPs, MAP Aand MAP C were poorly immunogenic. In contrast toBALB/c mice, MAP E was non-immunogenic in C57BL/6 mice. Peptide B in the form of MAP B orbis-diepitopic MAPB-E elicited immune responses in C57BL/6 mice that were associated with a significant decrease in worm burden. The MAPs were prepared by the stepwise solid-phase peptide synthesis using Boc/Bzl chemistry, successfully purified on the RP-HPLC column and characterized by RP-HPLC, HPCE and MALDI-TOF MS techniques. Gonadotropin releasing hormone (GnRH) was given to 109 cows and heifers during the course of 224 superovulations. Follicle stimulating hormone (FSH) was administered twice daily (5 or 6 mg) for 3.5 to 4 days beginning on any of Days 9 to 14 of the estrous cycle; prostaglandin (45 mg PGF(2)alpha or 750 ug cloprostenol) was given in a split dose on the fourth day. Donor cows and heifers were placed into four groups according to previous superovulation treatments, which consisted of one to three treatments or of no previous treatment. Every other cow or heifer within each of the four subgroups was treated with GnRH (200 mug i.m.) at standing estrus. Only donors that exhibited estrus within 32 to 72 h after the first prostaglandin treatment were used in the study. Animals were inseminated artificially 12 and 24 h after standing estrus was first observed. No differences were noted in the number of ovulations, total ova or transferable embryos recovered from the GnRH or control groups; however, two interactions were detected. Cows given GnRH had fewer palpable corpora lutea than control cows (P < 0.05), but this difference was not seen in heifers. The second interaction was that GnRH seemed to depress ovulation rate in donors not previously superovulated, but this effect was not observed with subsequent superovulations. Cows yielded more total ova than heifers (P < 0.01). There was no difference in return to estrus between GnRH and control groups after a second prostaglandin treatment at the time of embryo recovery. The mating ability of the different Adh genotypes of D. melanogaster, from three natural populations, was estimated as the number of females inseminated by a single male in a 24-hour period. The data indicate that populations of D. melanogaster vary in mating properties, but a common tendency was found in all of them: the heterozygous individuals, especially the males, show a relative advantage with respect to homozygotes. On the other hand, our results suggest that the differences in mating patterns observed between populations may be correlated with the different degree of Adh polymorphism found in them. 相似文献

Certain pharmacological properties of methyl beta-carboline-3-carboxylate (beta-CCM), a benzodiazepine receptor ligand, have been investigated in chicks. Although beta-CCM has been established previously as an "inverse agonist" of benzodiazepine receptors in rodents, having effects opposite to those of benzodiazepines in a variety of tests, in chicks this compound had a different pharmacological profile. Firstly, in contrast to the overt convulsant action of beta-CCM in other species, beta-CCM (0.05-40 mg/kg) did not produce convulsions by itself in chicks, but it was only proconvulsant. Secondly and most surprisingly, beta-CCM, like diazepam, produced in chicks a sedation which could be blocked by the benzodiazepine receptor antagonist Ro 15-1788. Thus it appears that beta-CCM can function both as an agonist and as an inverse agonist in this animal. 相似文献

Inactivation of the nitrate-reducing system in whole cells of Chlorella vulgaris Bejerinck by darkening, nitrogen starvation, ammonium, or cycloheximide brings cells into a state with a high yield of the millisecond-delayed fluorescence of chlorophyll. Activation of this system by illumination, by adding glucose to dark-adapted cells or nitrate to nitrogen-starved cells brings the cells into a low-yield state. The transitions between the lowand high-yield state induced by alternating light and dark periods are suppressed by tungstate and restored by subsequent molybdate addition. The drop in the delayed-fluorescence yield upon activation of the nitrate-reducing system is associated with the decrease of the amplitude of the electrochemical proton gradient across the thylakoid membrane of the chloroplast, as evidenced by the kinetics of the light-induced adsorption changes at 520 nm. The decrease of the proton gradient may be caused by the electron flow diverting from the cyclic path in photosystem I as a result of the activation of the electron transfer from ferredoxin to nitrite.Abbreviation DCMU

This paper is a survey of the vegetation of the southeastern departments in the Province of Santa Fe (Argentina). The vegetation was analyzed following Braun-Blanquet's approach modified by Mueller-Dombois & Ellenberg (1974). The most relevant species of the region were placed in 25 groups according to their requirements or general behaviour. Most of the communities are herbaceous, and apart from the woody and some other miscellaneous ones they were grouped into three ecologically and floristically defined sets. The first set, the Stipa grasslands and related communities, which are characterized by the more or less abundant presence of Stipa hyalina, Stipa neesiana and Stipa papposa, comprises five different communities. The second, the halophilous communities, comprises five communities, the two Spartina ssp. grasslands, the halophilous prairies of Distichlis spicata, the short sedge Scirpus americanus communities and the ‘pela-dales’. The third, the hygrophilous communities, comprises nine communities which are not so well defined as the ones in the other sets. Besides, two further communities have been included, the Paspalum quadrifarium and the Melica macra tall grasslands. 相似文献
