Neodryinus typhlocybae (Hymenoptera: Dryinidae) is a natural enemy of the planthopper Metcalfa pruinosa, which was introduced from North America into Europe and has become established in various regions as a pest species. Vibrational signals play a crucial role in the communication of M. pruinosa, which appears to be exploited by N. typhlocybae. Scanning and transmission electron microscopy have shown that the antennae of N. typhlocybae females have peculiar and complex sensory structures: deep longitudinal grooves that house long sensilla trichodea, termed here “Antennal Dorsal Organs.” Such structures were not present on male antennae. These sensilla extend for the length of the grooves, without contact with the groove cuticle. Their hair shaft is empty and aporous, and inserted into a specialized socket, underneath which there is a cuticular ampulla‐like chamber. Each sensillum is associated with two sensory neurons: one terminates at the proximal end of the dendritic sheath; the other continues into the sensillum sinus and is enclosed in the dendritic sheath. This second sensory neuron then enters the ampulla‐like chamber through the circular opening, and then terminates with a conspicuous tubular body at the shaft base. Erythrocyte ghosts, prepared from the blood of rats fed zinc-deficient diets, were evaluated for membrane fluidity and surface sialic acid properties using spin-labeled probes and electron spin resonance (ESR) spectroscopy. These physical parameters of the erythrocyte ghosts from the zinc-deficient group were compared to those for erythrocyte ghosts obtained from ad libitum and pair fed controls consuming zinc-adequate diets. As the animals became progressively zinc deficient, the erythrocyte ghost membranes became more fluid than those from the control groups. In addition, the apparent rotational correlation time of Tempamine spin probes on surface sialic acid residues was smaller for the zinc deficient group, indicative of an increased rotational mobility of the spin label. These results suggest that zinc deficiency can have pronounced effects on the physical state of membrane bilayer lipids and cell surface carbohydrates and supports the view that many of the pathological signs of zinc deficiency are due to a general membrane defect.  相似文献

The tricarboxylate carrier from rat liver mitochondria was solubilized with Triton X-100 and purified by chromatography on hydroxyapatite and celite. SDS-gel electrophoresis of the purified fraction showed a single polypeptide band with an apparent Mr of 30,000. When reconstituted into liposomes, the tricarboxylate transport protein catalyzed a 1,2,3-benzenetricarboxylate-sensitive citrate/citrate exchange. We obtained a 1070-fold purification with respect to the mitochondrial extract, the recovery was 22% and the protein yield 0.02%. The properties of the reconstituted carrier, i.e., requirement for a counteranion, substrate specificity and inhibitor sensitivity, were similar to those of the tricarboxylate transport system as characterized in intact mitochondria.  相似文献

We examined the expression of platelet-derived growth factor (PDGF)-A and the PDGF alpha-receptor in pre-implantation and early post-implantation mouse embryos. At two-cell and blastocyst stages, all cells express mRNA and protein for both ligand and receptor. In contrast, early post-implantation embryos express PDGF-A chain mRNA in both embryonic ectoderm and in the ectoderm lining the ectoplacental cavity, while mRNA for PDGF alpha-receptor is localized to the mesoderm layers of both embryonic and extra-embryonic membranes. At days 3.5 and 7.5, receptors are demonstrably functional in response to exogenous PDGF-AA. We propose that chronic autostimulation of PDGF alpha-receptors occurs in pre-implantation embryos, whereas, following implantation, early mesoderm development is dependent on stimulation by ectodermally produced PDGF-A.  相似文献

X-ray microanalysis has been used to determine the elemental composition of oil-palm (Elaeis guineesis) cell suspensions without the use of cryoprotectants. Results based on individual cells were gathered over a typical growth cycle of 14 d. During the log phase (5–7 d) there is an increase in the number of cells containing high concentrations of both K (400 mmol kg-1 dry weight) and P (400 mmol kg-1 dry weight). Morphologically these cells had thin cell walls and were frequently joined to other cells (two to five cells per clump).  相似文献

Effects of placental malaria on mothers and neonates from Zaire   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
Of one hundred placentas collected consecutively in the Ubangi district, Zaire, 64 had falciparum malaria. Mothers and infants of the 64 malarious and 36 non-malarious placentas were compared. The malarious placentas had no consistent relationship to infant length or head circumference, APGAR score, birthweight, maternal anemia, splenomegaly or hydramnios. The rate of hydramnios, in fact, was higher in the mothers with non-malarious placentas. Mothers with malarious placentas were younger (means 24) than mothers with non-malarious placentas (means 29). Mothers with fewer pregnancies were more likely to have malarious placentas than older multiparous mothers. There were 7 stillbirths, 4 from mothers with malarious placentas. Infants born to mothers with malarious placentas averaged 100 g less than those from mothers with non-malarious placentas. This study shows that mothers with falciparum malaria from the Ubangi district deliver normal and apparently unaffected infants.  相似文献

Summary A new probabilistic learning machine for pattern recognition is described. The machine operates on the basis of random criteria obtained from special pseudorandom generators. The input, particularly versatile due to the use of an image dissector, allows a random scan for which normal television storage pick-up tubes are not suitable. The computation data section, completely automatic, uses two ferrite core memories with a capacity of 64,000 bits. Consequently it is possible to obtain very quick recognizing cycles for a maximum of 16 classes of 256 learning examples each. Preliminary experiments are reported, some of which, like the recognition of meteorological events by the analysis of absolute baric topography maps, could already be suitable for practical application of the machine.This work was supported by Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche (C.N.R.) through the Gruppo Nazionale Cibernetica (G.N.C.).  相似文献
