Glucagon Affinity Absorbents: Selective Binding of Receptors of Liver Cell Membranes

AFFINITY chromatography has been used in the rapid isolation of enzymes, antibodies, antigens and other ligand-binding proteins^1–6. Selective adsorbents with biological specificity perhaps may best be used in the resolution and isolation of complex biological structures and important regulatory macromolecules present in cells in very low amounts. For example, polypeptide and steroid hormone receptors, drug receptors, transport proteins and repressor molecules may be well suited for study by this technique because they display specific binding functions with a high degree of affinity.

Isolation and characterization of microsatellite loci in Cylindrocladium pauciramosum

Ten polymorphic microsatellite markers were developed for Cylindrocladium pauciramosum, a plant pathogen with a wide host range, which poses a serious problem in South African Eucalyptus nurseries. Polymorphism was evaluated on 43 isolates collected from Colombia and South Africa. Each locus had between three and six alleles. Testing for random mating showed multilocus equilibrium for a population of 40 isolates from a South African forestry nursery. Cross‐species transferability tested for 19 other Cylindrocladium species found amplification only in C. spathulatum, which is phylogenetically closely related to C. pauciramosum.     

A new Spanish species of the genus Ononis L.(Fabaceae)

The name Ononis rentonarensis is proposed for a new Spanish species belonging to Ononis section Matrix subsection Rhodanlhae, whose distribution is restricted to a few localities in northeastern Alicante Province (E.Spain). Its morphological features, ecology and main relationships and differences with other Spanish species in the subsection are discussed.     

Rhetoric of Exclusion and Racist Violence in a Catalan Secondary School

Drawing on ethnographic research in a secondary school in Catalonia, Spain, this article analyzes the relationship between racist violence against students of African origin and racist ideologies held by students, described as a rhetoric of exclusion. I argue for a more detailed and painstaking characterization of students' ethnic discourses as a means of understanding the diversity of these discourses and their connection to intergroup relations.     

Thirteen polymorphic microsatellite loci in the Neotropical fish Prochilodus argenteus (Characiformes,Prochilodontidae)

Prochilodus species inhabit the main river systems of South America and usually present commercial value to inland fishing. In the present study, we describe the isolation and characterization of 13 novel microsatellite loci in Prochilodus argenteus. The number of alleles per polymorphic locus varied from four to 22 and the observed heterozygosity ranged from 0.333 to 0.893. Additionally, cross‐species amplification was successful in two other Prochilodus species. These loci will be useful for studies of the population genetic structure in this fish group.
