Ectotherms thermoregulate to maintain their body temperature within the optimal range needed for performing vital functions. The effect of climate change on lizards has been studied as regards the sensitivity of locomotor performance to environmental temperatures. We studied thermoregulatory efficiency and locomotor performance for Liolaemus fitzgeraldi in the Central Andes of Argentina. We determined body temperature, micro-environmental temperatures and operative temperatures in the field. In the laboratory, we measured preferred temperatures and calculated the index of thermoregulatory efficiency. We estimated the thermal sensitivity of locomotion by measuring sprint speed (initial velocity and long sprint) and endurance at five different body temperatures. Body temperature was not associated with either micro-environmental temperature, nor did it show differences with preferred temperatures. Thermoregulatory efficiency was moderate (0.61). Initial velocity and long sprint trials showed differences at different temperatures; however, endurance did not. Moreover, the optimal temperatures for the performance trials showed no significant differences among themselves. We conclude that Liolaemus fitzgeraldi has thermal sensitivity in locomotor performance with respect to body temperature and that it is an eurythermic lizard that experiences a large variation in body temperature and that has thermal flexibility in the cold. 相似文献

The dry leaves of Peumus boldus (Monimiaceae) are used in infusion or decoction as a digestive and to improve hepatic complains. Preliminary assays showed free-radical scavenging activity in hot water extracts of boldo leaves, measured by the decoloration of a methanolic solution of the 1,1-diphenyl-2-picryl-hydrazyl radical (DPPH). Assay-guided isolation led to the active compounds. Catechin proved to be the main free-radical scavenger of the extracts. Lipid peroxidation in erythrocytes was inhibited by boldo extracts and fractions at 500 w g/ml with higher effect for the ethyl acetate soluble and alkaloid fractions. The IC 50 for catechin and boldine in the lipid peroxidation test were 75.6 and 12.5 w g/ml, respectively. On the basis of dry starting material, the catechin content in the crude drug was 2.25% while the total alkaloid calculated as boldine was 0.06%. The activity of boldine was six times higher than catechin in the lipid peroxidation assay. However, the mean catechin:total alkaloid content ratio was 37:1. The relative concentration of alkaloids and phenolics in boldo leaves and their activity suggest that free-radical scavenging effect is mainly due to catechin and flavonoids and that antioxidant effect is mainly related with the catechin content. The high catechin content of boldo leaves and its bioactivity suggest that quality control of Boldo folium has to combine the analysis of catechin as well as their characteristic aporphine alkaloids. 相似文献

Background
Mechanical ventilation can promote lung injury by triggering a pro-inflammatory response. Macrolides may exert some immunomodulatory effects and have shown significant benefits over other antibiotics in ventilated patients. We hypothesized that macrolides could decrease ventilator-induced lung injury. Methods
Adult mice were treated with vehicle, clarithromycin or levofloxacin, and randomized to receive mechanical ventilation with low (12 cmH2O, PEEP 2 cmH2O) or high (20 cmH2O, ZEEP) inspiratory pressures for 150 minutes. Histological lung injury, neutrophil infiltration, inflammatory mediators (NFκB activation, Cxcl2, IL-10) and levels of adhesion molecules (E-selectin, ICAM) and proteases (MMP-9 and MMP-2) were analyzed. Results
There were no differences among groups after low-pressure ventilation. Clarithromycin significantly decreased lung injury score and neutrophil count, compared to vehicle or levofloxacin, after high-pressure ventilation. Cxcl2 expression and MMP-2 and MMP-9 levels increased and IL-10 decreased after injurious ventilation, with no significant differences among treatment groups. Both clarithromycin and levofloxacin dampened the increase in NFκB activation observed in non-treated animals submitted to injurious ventilation. E-selectin levels increased after high pressure ventilation in vehicle- and levofloxacin-treated mice, but not in those receiving clarithromycin. Conclusions
Clarithromycin ameliorates ventilator-induced lung injury and decreases neutrophil recruitment into the alveolar spaces. This could explain the advantages of macrolides in patients with acute lung injury and mechanical ventilation. 相似文献4.

National parks are an important tool for conserving biodiversity, particularly in areas of high biodiversity and endemism such as the tropical Andes. However, national parks often face a variety of stressors related to recreation, road construction and illegal extraction of natural resources. Unfortunately, the influence of these stressors for biodiversity is rarely well documented. Cajas National Park in Ecuador is no exception. Despite being traversed by the Cuenca-Molleturo-Naranjal road, effects of the road construction on biodiversity have not been determined. We therefore assessed the influence of road proximity on bird species richness and abundance as well as composition of bird habitat groups in Cajas National Park using transect walks at 25 m and 250 m distance to the road (overall 18 transects, each 1 km length). In total, we recorded 1110 individuals of 28 páramo bird species. Overall species richness did not differ between transects near and far from the road. Nevertheless, the average abundance of shrubby páramo species was significantly higher far from the road than near the road (Far = 36, Near = 25). Moreover, we found a tendency towards differences in the composition of bird habitat groups between transects near and far from the road. One aspect potentially driving the observed patterns was the increasing proportion of planted non-native woody tree species within páramo grassland near the road, which may have caused reduced abundances of shrubby páramo bird species there. While roads represented a clear impact on the composition of bird species in the páramo, the major effect seems to be driven by the introduction of non-native plant species along the roadside. In order to reduce the impact of roads to a minimum, we suggest that park managers should control the introduction of such plant species. 相似文献

The microbiological oxidation of the diterpene solidagenone by Curvularia lunata afforded 3-hydroxysolidagenone and 3-oxosolidagenone as well as the fungal compounds radicinol and isoradicinol. Fermentation of solidagenone with Aspergillus niger afforded 3-hydroxy- and 19-hydroxysolidagenone while with Alternaria alternata yielded 3-oxosolidagenone. The structure of 3-oxosolidagenone is presented for the first time. 相似文献

The Gulf of Cariaco is a marine ecosystem with high primary productivity, which gives it an ecological and socioeconomic importance. Nevertheless, anthropogenic activities around the Gulf produce wastes that are deposited directly or by runoff into the sediments, and consequently, increases concentrations of metals in this ecosystem. The objective of this study was to determine the distribution of cadmium, copper, lead, manganese, nickel and zinc in geochemical fractions of surface sediments, using modified BCR sequential extraction procedure. The concentrations were measured using flame atomic absorption spectroscopy. In addition, the contents of soluble and exchangeable metals associated to carbonate fractions, determined by BCR, were compared with those determined by the method of Campanella. Samples were collected in 12 stations during June 2007. The applied methodologies were evaluated with a certified reference material of marine sediments (HISS-1) and the results indicated that these methods provide adequate accuracy and precision for the extraction of metals. The total metal concentrations (microg g(-1)) were, Cd: < limit of detection (LD)-5.0; Pb: 1.79-60.41; Cu: no detected (ND)-42.18; Zn: 25.13-104.57; Mn: 66.31-80.29 and Ni: 3.29-24.58. Cd, Cu, Ni and Pb at several stations, exceeded the Canadian Sediment Quality Guidelines of the Lowest Effect Levels (LEL). Cadmium was identified as being the most mobile of the elements, having the highest concentrations in soluble and exchangeable cations and carbonates. However, Pb, Cu, Mn and Zn levels were found highly associated to organic matter and sulfide fractions. The methods did not show significant statistical differences for the extraction of soluble and exchangeable cations and the metals associated to carbonate fraction. There are several significant correlations between heavy metals, which suggest their common origin. 相似文献

High-pressure ventilation triggers different inflammatory and matrix remodeling responses within the lung. Although some of them may cause injury, the involvement of these mediators in repair is largely unknown. To identify mechanisms of repair after ventilator-induced lung injury (VILI), mice were randomly assigned to baseline conditions (no ventilation), injury [90 min of high-pressure ventilation without positive end-expiratory pressure (PEEP)], repair (injury followed by 4 h of low-pressure ventilation with PEEP), and ventilated controls (low-pressure ventilation with PEEP for 90 and 330 min). Histological injury and lung permeability increased during injury, but were partially reverted in the repair group. This was accompanied by a proinflammatory response, together with increases in TNF-α and IFN-γ, which returned to baseline during repair, and a decrease in IL-10. However, macrophage inflammatory protein-2 (MIP-2) and matrix metalloproteinases (MMP)-2 and -9 increased after injury and persisted in being elevated during repair. Mortality in the repair phase was 50%. Survivors showed increased cell proliferation, lower levels of collagen, and higher levels of MIP-2 and MMP-2. Pan-MMP or specific MMP-2 inhibition (but not MIP-2, TNF-α, or IL-4 inhibition) delayed epithelial repair in an in vitro wound model using murine or human alveolar cells cultured in the presence of bronchoalveolar lavage fluid from mice during the repair phase or from patients with acute respiratory distress syndrome, respectively. Similarly, MMP inhibition with doxycycline impaired lung repair after VILI in vivo. In conclusion, VILI can be reverted by normalizing ventilation pressures. An adequate inflammatory response and extracellular matrix remodeling are essential for recovery. MMP-2 could play a key role in epithelial repair after VILI and acute respiratory distress syndrome. 相似文献

BACKGROUND: Focal myositis is an unusual inflammatwy lesion of the skeletal muscle first described by Heffizer. It is a benign condition and usually involves the muscles of the limbs. CASE: A man presented with a palpable mass in the left leg of 6 months' duration. Nuclear magnetic resonance of the leg showed a mass in the tibial muscle; the presumptive diagnosis was sarcoma of the muscle. Smears showed inflammatory cells, skeletal muscle fibers with degenerative and regenerative changes, and fibrous tissue, suggesting a diagnosis of focal myositis. An incisional muscle biopsy was performed, confirming the diagnosis. CONCLUSION: Focal myositis should always he considered when aspirating muscle masses because it is a clinical mimic of a neoplasm. The prognosis is good, and all cases reported in the literature were self-limiting and gradually resolved. 相似文献

During a settlement decision, the presence of conspecifics is crucial to species subject to Allee effects, for which the number of founders affects the subsequent growth of the colony. Marking the area (physically or chemically) conveys information about the number of conspecifics present in a new patch. Here, we study how an individual affinity for the marker affects the dynamics of a foundation process. A generic population model is presented, in which marking and affinity for the marker are at stake. Our results show that population size thresholds can appear, below which settlement is not possible. This model is then used to study the dynamics of migration and aggregation in a set of interconnected populations. We show that affinity for the marker can induce asymmetries in the population distribution. Anelosimus eximius is a social spider subject to Allee effects, for which silk potentially acts as a marker. We test our predictions with field experiments involving two populations of A. eximius in a Y-shaped setup. The agreement between our experimental and theoretical results strongly supports the validity of the model. This allows us to use the model to estimate a realistic set of parameters of biological significance to this social spider. 相似文献

Apolipoprotein D (apo D), a lipocalin transporter of small hydrophobic molecules could play an important role in several neurodegenerative diseases. However, its role in those diseases remains unclear. Increments of apo D have been reported in relation with injury and degeneration in the nervous system. Recently increases of apo D level have been reported in schizophrenia, a neuropathologic disease where the oxidative stress and lipid abnormalities may be involved. Apo D could act as a sequestering molecule binding excess of arachidonic acid in cells. In order to determine the relationship between apo D expression and other neurodegenerative pathologies related to oxidative damage, we studied the presence of apo D in the substantia nigra of control and Parkinson disease (PD) subjects. We found dopaminergic neurons were not immunoreactive for apo D, control or PD subjects. However, surrounding glial cells showed immunostaining for apo D and signal increases in PD cases. These findings support the role of apolipoprotein D in neuroprotection and the importance of glia in the amount of this protein in the central nervous system. 相似文献
