Plant strategy and life‐history theories make different predictions about reproductive efficiency under competition. While strategy theory suggests under intense competition iteroparous perennial plants delay reproduction and semelparous annuals reproduce quickly, life‐history theory predicts both annual and perennial plants increase resource allocation to reproduction under intense competition. We tested (1) how simulated competition influences reproductive efficiency and competitive ability (CA) of different plant life histories and growth forms; (2) whether life history or growth form is associated with CA; (3) whether shade avoidance plasticity is connected to reproductive efficiency under simulated competition. We examined plastic responses of 11 herbaceous species representing different life histories and growth forms to simulated competition (spectral shade). We found that both annual and perennial plants invested more to reproduction under simulated competition in accordance with life‐history theory predictions. There was no significant difference between competitive abilities of different life histories, but across growth forms, erect species expressed greater CA (in terms of leaf number) than other growth forms. We also found that shade avoidance plasticity can increase the reproductive efficiency by capitalizing on the early life resource acquisition and conversion of these resources into reproduction. Therefore, we suggest that a reassessment of the interpretation of shade avoidance plasticity is necessary by revealing its role in reproduction, not only in competition of plants. 相似文献

We report a 48 year old male who presented with diaphragmatic stimulation. The biventricular implantable cardioverter and defibrillator (CRT-D) was implanted two weeks before admission and active fixation lead caused perforation of the right atrial wall. Echocardiography did not demonstrate pericardial effusion but Chest X-ray and computed tomography (CT) visualized the atrial screw helix outside the right atrial wall, penetrating through the right lung middle lobe. There was no atrial capture. After changing the pace mode DDDR to VVIR, diaphragmatic stimulation was disappeared. The atrial lead was repositioned and fixed again. During the hospital admission and after that the patient was well and free of any symptoms. 相似文献

Research on the frequency of the highly functional mutations of genes coding required for metabolizing enzymes has shown significant
ethnic variations. However, few studies, if any, have examined the frequency distribution of major allelic variations in the
context of Iran. In this regard, the present study focused on the genotype profile of Southern Iranians in order to compare
allele frequencies of their CYP3A5 and P2Y12 (T744C) which have been shown to have roles in metabolizing clopidogrel, with those of other populations. Therefore, genotyping
was carried out on 112 unrelated individuals by PCR–RFLP. The CYP3A5*3 allele was found in 185 persons with allelic frequency 0.82, which is the most common allele among Caucasians (90–95%). The
frequency of 82% is different from other Caucasians (90–94%), Indians (67%), Vietnam (67%) and Africans (15%). but lower than
frequency in Chinese populations (74%) and Korean (76%). The allele frequency of the −744T (4%) is different from frequencies
of Caucasian, American, Chinese, Korean, and Subsahara population. This study confirmed significant inter-ethnic differences
in CYP3A5 and P2Y12 frequencies between Iranians and other ethnic groups. The results of this study will be useful for clinical pharmacokinetic
investigations and drug dosage recommendations especially antiplatelet drugs such as Clopidogrel, for Iranians. 相似文献

This study was undertaken to investigate the hematological and biochemical changes in experimentally infected goats with Besnoitia caprae from the time of infection till 360 days post-infection (PI). Six male goats were inoculated subcutaneously with 13 × 10(7) bradyzoites of B. caprae, and blood samples were collected from the jugular vein. The total erythrocyte and total leukocyte counts, hematocrit value, and differential leukocyte counts were determined. Serum biochemical analysis, including the total protein, albumin, total globulin, cholesterol, triglyceride, chloride, testosterone, calcium (Ca(2+)), inorganic phosphorus, sodium (Na(+)), potassium (K(+)), iron (Fe(2+)), glucose, serum amyloid A (SAA), haptoglobin (Hp), fibrinogen, ceruloplasmin, aspartate aminotransferase, alanine aminotransferase, creatine kinase, lactate dehydrogenase, and alkaline phosphatase, was undertaken. Skin biopsy from the limbs were collected at weekly intervals and histologically examined for Besnoitia cysts. Cysts were present in the skin biopsies of the leg of the infected goats from day 28 PI. There were variations in hematological analyses, but no significant difference was seen. From day 30 to 360 PI, results showed that SAA, Hp, fibrinogen, and ceruloplasmin concentrations increased, whereas testosterone concentrations decreased. Infected goats exhibited decrease of albumin and increase of serum total protein and globulin concentrations. By contrast, there were no significant differences in the remained analyses concentrations. 相似文献

Ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS) is a pre-invasive carcinoma of the breast that exhibits several distinct morphologies but the link between morphology and patient outcome is not clear. We hypothesize that different mechanisms of growth may still result in similar 2D morphologies, which may look different in 3D. To elucidate the connection between growth and 3D morphology, we reconstruct the 3D architecture of cribriform DCIS from resected patient material. We produce a fully automated algorithm that aligns, segments, and reconstructs 3D architectures from microscopy images of 2D serial sections from human specimens. The alignment algorithm is based on normalized cross correlation, the segmentation algorithm uses histogram equilization, Otsu's thresholding, and morphology techniques to segment the duct and cribra. The reconstruction method combines these images in 3D. We show that two distinct 3D architectures are indeed found in samples whose 2D histological sections are similarly identified as cribriform DCIS. These differences in architecture support the hypothesis that luminal spaces may form due to different mechanisms, either isolated cell death or merging fronds, leading to the different architectures. We find that out of 15 samples, 6 were found to have 'bubble-like' cribra, 6 were found to have 'tube-like' criba and 3 were 'unknown.' We propose that the 3D architectures found, 'bubbles' and 'tubes', account for some of the heterogeneity of the disease and may be prognostic indicators of different patient outcomes. 相似文献

Herein, we investigated the protective effect of Salvia sahendica against H2O2-induced cell death in rat pheochromocytoma (PC12) cells. Our data show that S. sahendica blocks apoptosis pathway by inhibition of cytochrome c release from mitochondria and leakage of calcium from endoplasmic reticulum. It also activates/inactivates two members of
Bcl-2 family, Bax and Bcl-2. Bax inhibition and Bcl-2 activation suppress release of cytochrome c from mitochondria that prevents cleavage of caspase-3. Besides S. sahendica suppresses ER stress via attenuation of intracellular levels of calcium. Suppression of ER stress decreased calpain activation
and subsequently cleavage of caspase-12. Altogether, these results indicate that S. sahendica protects PC12 cells treated with H2O2 via suppression of upstream factors of apoptosis pathway. While oxidative stress is an early event in Alzheimer disease,
it seems that S. sahendica prevents deleterious effects of reactive oxygen species by stabilizing mitochondrial membranes and inhibiting ER stress. 相似文献
