A biogeochemical model for the evolution of template-and-sequence-directed (TSD) syntheses of biological templates (proto-RNAs) and catalysts (peptides) is described. A fluctuating environment characterized by hydrating (cool) and dehydrating (warm) phases with cycles of consecutive organic reactions, as well as a constant supply of the polymeric building blocks is assumed. The scenario starts with the catalyzed formation of a primordial population of small random peptides, based on the relatively-ineffective mineral catalysts. The resulting peptides initiate a catalytic takeover process, during which the catalytic functions are gradually taken over by peptides. The evolution of TSD peptides is based on a combination of Lahavs (1991) co-evolution and Möller and Janssen's (1990) specific recognition sites hypotheses. During the emergence of TSD systems the fraction of TSD peptides and proto-RNA constituents rises from almost insignificance to dominance in a TSD Reactions Takeover. The TSD system is characterized by autocatalysis, positive feedback loops and a primordial genetic code. The model is the basis for a computer program (Part II of present series). 相似文献

Different organisms use gradual seasonal changes in photoperiod to correctly time diverse developmental processes, such as transition to flowering in plants. Florigen is a systemic signal formed in leaves exposed to specific environmental cues, mainly photoperiodic, and capable of triggering flower induction in several species. Here we show that in Passiflora edulis, a perennial climbing vine, flower initiation occurs throughout the year; however, without long photoperiods, flower primordia show arrested growth and differentiation at an early stage. Our results support the existence of a positive, systemic, graft‐transmissible signal, produced in mature leaves under LDs, that is required for normal flower development beyond sepal formation. Our results also suggest that Gibberellin acts to inhibit flower development. We provide evidence for genetic variation in the response to short photoperiods. A genotype capable of forming developed flowers under short photoperiods produces a positive graft transmissible signal allowing normal flower development under short days in a cultivar which normally aborts flower development under these conditions. We believe these findings contribute towards discovering the chemical nature of this interesting mobile signal involved in flower development. 相似文献

The rich Levantine fauna and flora were shaped by millions of years of migration across the region, from Africa to Eurasia and vice versa. Most large-scale processes that led to this diversity have been relatively well studied. However, small-scale processes, and details such as the area of origin of particular groups, and the route and time of dispersal are often not as clear. This is the case with the endemic Levantine representatives of the fish family Cichlidae. In this work we combine genetic, palaeontological and geological data in an attempt to understand the dispersal of the cichlid fish Astatotilapia flaviijosephi (Lortet, 1883) from sub-Saharan Africa to the Levant. A. flaviijosephi is unique among the Levantine cichlids in being the only non-tilapiine. It is also the only haplochromine cichlid to be found out of Africa. A partial sequence of the control region of the mitochondrial DNA was used to determine A. flaviijosephi 's phylogenetic relationships with other African haplochromines, and to estimate its time of divergence from this group. Combining our findings with palaeontological and geological data, we suggest that A. flaviijosephi separated from the other haplochromines during the middle to late Pliocene (2.5–3.3 Mya) and probably dispersed from Africa to the Levant via the Nile. © 2004 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society , 2004, 82 , 103–109. 相似文献
