The recurrence of influenza A epidemics has originally been explained by a “continuous antigenic drift” scenario. Recently, it has been shown that if genetic drift is gradual, the evolution of influenza A main antigen, the haemagglutinin, is punctuated. As a consequence, it has been suggested that influenza A dynamics at the population level should be approximated by a serial model. Here, simple models are used to test whether a serial model requires gradual antigenic drift within groups of strains with the same antigenic properties (antigenic clusters). We compare the effect of status based and history based frameworks and the influence of reduced susceptibility and infectivity assumptions on the transient dynamics of antigenic clusters. Our results reveal that the replacement of a resident antigenic cluster by a mutant cluster, as observed in data, is reproduced only by the status based model integrating the reduced infectivity assumption. This combination of assumptions is useful to overcome the otherwise extremely high model dimensionality of models incorporating many strains, but relies on a biological hypothesis not obviously satisfied. Our findings finally suggest the dynamical importance of gradual antigenic drift even in the presence of punctuated immune escape. A more regular renewal of susceptible pool than the one implemented in a serial model should be part of a minimal theory for influenza at the population level.  相似文献

Genetic variation at 10 enzyme loci was analysed in Elysia timida sacoglossan mollusc samples, originating from both coastal lagoon and marine sites. The observed heterozygosity ranged from 0.390 (Los Urrutias) to 0.277 (Tabarca). Marine and coastal lagoon populations were characterised by exclusive alleles.  相似文献

Initial reaction rates for the hydrolysis of nucleic acids with micrococcal endonuclease (EC 3.1.31.1) insolubilized on Sepharose are strongly influenced by diffusional limitations. Although the absolute values are low, they can be increased substantially by changing particle and pore size of the support, or enzyme concentration in the insoluble derivative. As a result of steric and diffusional limitations, the course of the reaction and selectivity to hydrolysis products for the insoluble derivatives are different to those of the native enzyme; the former produces mainly large and small fragments but few of intermediate size. Because of these differences in course and selectivity of the reaction, diffusional limitations become less important when high initial reaction rates are not required.  相似文献

We have reviewed all the dermatophytoses diagnosed in Galicia during four consecutive 9-year periods 1951–86 and 1987. From 4571 patients, we isolated 3351 fungal strains belonging, in decreasing order of frequency, to the following dermatophyte species: Microsporum canis (25.5%), Trichophyton rubrum (24.6%), T. mentagrophytes (21.4%), Epidermophyton floccosum (11.8%), M. gypseum (5.2%), T. tonsurans (3.9%), T. verrucosum (3.1%), T. schoenleinii (2.5%), T. violaceum (1.2%), T. mengninii (0.3%), M. audouinii (0.2%), T. equinum (0.1%) and T. soudanense (0.1%). Tinea capitis has diminished in frequency since 1951, though there was been a slight increase since 1978; M. canis has always been the most common agent, and between 1951 and 1959 T. schoenleinii was also very frequent but is no longer found. The frequency of tinea corporis, on the other hand, has experienced a considerable increase. Its most common causal agents in the last few years have been T. mentagrophytes, M. canis and T. rubrum. Until 1977 the most common tinea cruris dermatophyte was E. floccosum, but since then it has been T. rubrum. The commonest tinea pedis dermatophytes have been T. rubrum and T. mentagrophytes. Tinea unguium and tinea barbae have been the most frequent dermatophytoses, and their commonest causal agents T. rubrum and T. mentagrophytes respectively. We have documented the distribution of the various causal agents by location of the lesions, age and source of the patients (private or National Health Service patients), and we have compared the results with those obtained in other regions of Spain.  相似文献

Batch cultures ofA. vinelandii in ammonium phosphate-limited and N-free phosphate-limited media were compared with control cultures (N-free phosphate-sufficient media). The effects of phosphate limitation on growth were determined by viable cells counts. Under phosphate-limitation conditions, growth inhibition and decreased viability were observed. Intracellular levels of RNA, poly-3-hydroxybutyrate, phosphate and oxygen uptake were significantly affected by phosphate limitation. When phosphate-limited cultures were examined microscopically, pleomorphism was more marked than in control cultures. Also phosphate-limited cells showed an increase in resistance to UV irradiation, mechanical disruption, desiceation and the combined action of ethylenediaminetetraacetie acid and lysozyme.  相似文献

Using an in vitro system, we studied the effect of postischemic reoxygenation on cerebral lipid peroxidation in relation to the dietary intake of vitamin E (VE) in rats. Homogenates prepared from VE-deficient, -normal, and -supplemented brains, which were previously rendered ischemic for 30 min by decapitation, were incubated under air or nitrogen gas for 60 min. The extent of peroxidation in brain tissue was estimated by a thiobarbituric acid (TBA) test and by diene conjugation in total lipid extracts. The brain levels of alpha-tocopherol and of total and free fatty acids (FAs) were also determined. Aerobic incubation increased TBA reactants in all dietary groups; the effect was largest in the VE-deficient group, intermediate in the VE-normal group, and smallest in the VE-supplemented group. In contrast, nitrogen incubation did not alter the basal levels of TBA reactants except for a small rise associated with VE deficiency. Conjugated dienes changed in parallel with TBA reactants. alpha-Tocopherol decreased after aerobic incubation and also, to a lesser degree, after nitrogen incubation in each dietary group. Only in the reoxygenated samples of the VE-deficient group was there a significant fall in total polyunsaturated FAs. The levels of free FAs continuously increased throughout ischemia and subsequent incubation. However, the level of free polyunsaturated FAs was similar after aerobic and nitrogen incubation in each dietary group, and was not affected by VE. Thus, cerebral reoxygenation after ischemia propagates peroxidative reactions within esterified polyunsaturated FAs. The modification by VE of reoxygenation-induced lipid peroxidation suggests free radical mediation.  相似文献

Histoplasma capsulatum yeast cells have been studied by immunoelectron microscopy using rabbit polyclonal antisera and a biotin-avidin-peroxidase detection system. An antigenic surface layer has been visualized in the cell wall of immunostained organisms. This layer was not seen in samples prepared by standard electron microscopic methods or in negative controls used with the immunocytochemical technique. Without immunostaining the cell wall ofHistoplasma appeared almost transparent. In contrast, after immunoperoxidase staining the cell wall was conspicuous, bounded by the darkly stained outer layer. Near-ultraviolet (UV) light (325 to 400 nm), in the presence of air and the absence of exogenous photosensitizing compounds, is lethal and mutagenic for Haemophilus influenzae. The lethal effect is the same for both wild type and streptomycin-resistant mutants, indicating that the mutants are not selected by the irradiation. The inactivation and mutagenicity show a large shoulder, suggesting the existence of repair systems. Filters were used to eliminate the possibility of short-UV irradiation. The effective radiation is between 325 to 400 nm. The lethal and mutagenic effects are higher during mid and late log phase than during early log or stationary phase.  相似文献
