The species composition of rotifers in Lake Awasa was studied and 40 species recorded. Seven species appeared in large numbers in the plankton seasonally. Brachionus and Keratella species made up more than 50% of the rotifer community by numbers during the observation period (1983–1987). The standing stock numbers of rotifer species are low with a maximum of 50 individuals L–1, and some possible reasons for this observation are discussed. Most rotifer species are distributed randomly in the lake and show 3-fold fluctuations between consecutive days. The seasonal dynamics of most rotifer species are correlated with mixing periods in the lake, and the amplitude of seasonal fluctuation may be as high as 50-fold. Clear-cut seasonal succession of rotifer species was observed during the study period, but no consistent seasonal pattern for individual species was obvious. Also, observations indicate that rotifer biomass is partly sustained by availability of carbon through the bacterial pathway and that competitive exclusion for food by nauplii and ciliates probably keeps rotifer abundance low.  相似文献

Alona diaphana, a common littoral tropicopolitan cladoceran, occurs in the limnetic of two Ethiopian lakes in considerable numbers and over long periods of time. Our results are presented and the composition of limnetic and littoral zooplankton, in terms of previous records of such incursions, are discussed. The high persistent densities of A. diaphana are due to the extensive littoral areas in the lakes, where it originates, the high intrinsic rates of increase of this species, the low diversity of zooplankton, reducing competition and the low level of predation.  相似文献

Seasonal variation of the biomass (B), production (P) and P/Bratio of the numerically dominant crustaceans in Lake Awasa(Mesocydops aequatonalis stmilts, Thermocyclops consunilis andDiaphanosoma exisum) were studied during 1986 and 1987. Quantitativenet samples (64 (xm mesh) were taken at three stations on 10day intervals throughout 1986, and the dry weights and developmenttimes for each life stage were obtained from laboratory measurementsand cultures Total biomass of most of the dominant crustaceans, determined from 390 samples during 1986, was 44.85 mg m3(dry weight, DW) with adult females of Mesocyclops making >43.5%.Alona diaphana, another common crustacean, is dealt with ina separate paper, as are the Rotifera. Production of the dominantcrustaceans during 1986 was estimated by the growth incrementsummation (Winberg) and instantaneous growth (Ricker) methodsThe annual integrated production of the two dominant cyclopoidsis 535.2 mg (DW) m3 (Winberg) while annual crustaceanproduction totals 2.5 g (DW) m3 (Ricker) The mean annualP/B ratio for individual species and stages varied from 221.0for Diaphanosoma, to 121.7-143.0 for nauplii and 9.8–187 for copepodites of the cyclopoids It was 55 8 for the dominantzooplankton species Low or high zooplankton production and biomassturnover rates (P/B) cannot be used to characterize all tropicallakes consistently However, production per unit biomass is likelyto be higher in tropical lakes.  相似文献

The zooplankton of a Rift Valley lake in Ethiopia, Awasa, was sampled at 3 stations for 2 years (1986 and 1987) concurrently with various meteorological and limnological measurements. The spatial and temporal variation in abundance of some numerically dominant crustaceans, Mesocyclops aequatorialis similis (Copepoda), Thermocyclops consimilis (Copepoda) and Diaphanosoma excisum (Cladocera) is discussed. Temporal (months, sampling dates) rather than spatial (station) variability accounts for more than 50% of the total variance in zooplankton abundance but horizontal patchiness exists during periods of high zooplankton density. Sampling errors were generally low, except for counts of cyclopoid nauplii (subsampling) and Diaphanosoma (inter-replicate variance). Zooplankton showed distinct seasonality associated with the mixing cycle of the lake. Total numbers increased to more than 200 000 m−3 during the unstratified period (July to September). Low numbers were evident during stratification (February to May) when zooplankton numbers did not exceed 15 000 m−3. Individual zooplankton species and age classes showed variable seasonal amplitudes, ranging from 6.4 (nauplius 3) to 44.8 (copepodite 3 of Mesocyclops). We discuss some possible causes for zooplankton seasonality in Lake Awasa, and also review zooplankton seasonal cycles in other tropical lakes, especially African ones.  相似文献

Invertebrate zooplankton predators are generally less diverse in average species numbers in tropical than in temperate lakes and reservoirs. Predatory Copepoda which comprise the majority of limnetic predators are particularly low in species numbers in the tropics. Predatory Cladocera are confined to the North Temperate zone. Chaoborus appears to be cosmopolitan. Among Rotifera, only the cosmopolitan predator Asplanchna occurs in tropical waters while the other common limnetic carnivorous genus Ploesoma is restricted to higher latitudes. Hydracarina, and insects besides Chaoborus, are generally restricted to the littoral and appear to be more diverse in the tropics. Lakes Awasa and Zwai, Ethiopia, are almost devoid of predators in the limnetic, which is invaded by a littoral chydorid Alona diaphana. Low diversity of lake types and low production of tropical zooplankton could restrict predator diversity too. Very low diversity of invertebrate predators in the limnetic and higher diversity in the littoral may characterize tropical lakes in contrast to temperate lakes, which have more invertebrate predators in the limnetic and perhaps relatively less in the littoral. Tropical zooplankton in freshwaters, appears to be a very immature community. Hence opportunistic species can readily invade the limnetic and even dominate in isolated situations as has been shown for Alona davidi, Hydracarina and some other unconventional forms.  相似文献

The communities of planktonic Rotifera in thirty localities in Ethiopia were examined. All the localities lay at altitudes of over 1100 m and some were over 2000 m. The salinities ranged from 0.12 to 56.3% and in those lakes with salinities over 2% there was a marked reduction in the number of rotifer species, with Brachionus dimidiatus the most frequently dominant. The mean momentary species number in these Ethiopian samples is significantly higher than the means given by Pennak (1947) for Colorado and the rest of the world. Long-term planktonic species numbers in lakes Ziway and Awasa were about three times the mean momentary species number. The dominance ratios in the samples ranged from 19 to 91, but in general were lower than those given by Pennak. The most frequently dominant species were members of the family Brachionidae. Comparison with the data of Tonolli (1962) on the Lago Maggiore indicates that more data are needed on species diversity and dominance before valid geographical comparisons can be made.  相似文献
