The nematode fauna of a temperate Australian mangrove mudflat; its population density,diversity and distribution 总被引:2,自引:1,他引:1
The nematode fauna of an estuarine mangrove Avicennia marina mudflat in Southeastern Australia has been intensively studied. About 85% of the nematodes occur in the top cm of soft mud, but 5–7 species inhabit the deeper anoxic mud down to 10 cm, both at low and high tide. One square metre was intensively sampled from four zones with different nematode faunas. At the low tide zone 58% of the nematodes were epistrate feeders, including many diatom-feeders, but in the mangrove zone selective microbial feeders made up over 60% of the population, while between high water neap and high water spring, above the mangrove zone, omnivore/predators and plant root feeding nematodes increased in relative importance. Random replicate cores reliably sampled species occurrence, but gave a high variance in density estimates. Replicate aliquots from homogenised mud gave lower density variance. Nematode densities (maximum 5 × 106 m-2) were not as high as have been reported from non-mangrove estuaries in other countries, but were within the range found in mangroves elsewhere in Australia. Margalef Species Richness values ranged from 1.7 to 3.89, which is similar to values found in other mangroves mudflats in Australia. Nematode biomass ranged from 888 mg dry weight m2 (383 mg C m-2) at the low tide zone to 19 mg dry weight m-2 (8 mg C m-2) at the upper tide level. 相似文献

A variety of microorganisms were used to hydrolyze racemic methyl jasmonate [I] with varying degrees of enantioselectivity. The fungi tested included species from the genera Aspergillus, Penicillium, and Talaromyces. All fungi tested showed a preference for the [1S,2S(Z)]-(+)-isomer. The yeasts Saccharomyces cerevisiae and Candida albicans showed no activity. A number of bacterial genera were also tested. No activity could be shown for members of the genera Bacillus, Pseudomonas, Escherichia, Nocardia, and Thermoactinomyces. Hydrolytic activity was found in the genera Streptomyces and Mycobacterium. S. henetus showed the same enantioselectivity as the fungi, while M. phlei hydrolyzed the [1R,2R(Z)]-(−)-isomer preferentially. A number of isolated enzymes were also screened for activity. Varying degrees of hydrolytic activity and enantioselectivity were found. 相似文献

European badgers (Meles meles) are group‐living mustelids implicated in the spread of bovine tuberculosis (TB) to cattle and act as a wildlife reservoir for the disease. In badgers, only a minority of individuals disperse from their natal social group. However, dispersal may be extremely important for the spread of TB, as dispersers could act as hubs for disease transmission. We monitored a population of 139 wild badgers over 7 years in a medium‐density population (1.8 individuals/km2). GPS tracking collars were applied to 80 different individuals. Of these, we identified 25 dispersers, 14 of which were wearing collars as they dispersed. This allowed us to record the process of dispersal in much greater detail than ever before. We show that dispersal is an extremely complex process, and measurements of straight‐line distance between old and new social groups can severely underestimate how far dispersers travel. Assumptions of straight‐line travel can also underestimate direct and indirect interactions and the potential for disease transmission. For example, one female disperser which eventually settled 1.5 km from her natal territory traveled 308 km and passed through 22 different territories during dispersal. Knowledge of badgers' ranging behavior during dispersal is crucial to understanding the dynamics of TB transmission, and for designing appropriate interventions, such as vaccination. 相似文献

Expression of the AQP-1 water channel in normal human tissues: a semiquantitative study using tissue microarray technology 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Aquaporin water channels are a family of membrane proteins that facilitate water movement across biological membranes. Aquaporin-1 (AQP-1) has been found to be important in osmotic water movement across cell membranes of epithelial and endothelial barriers. However, the distribution of AQP-1 in many normal human tissues is still unknown. The aim of this study was to use immunohistochemistry and semiquantitative histomorphometric analysis to determine the tissue distribution and relative expression of AQP-1 in normal human tissues using tissue microarray (TMA) technology. The normal human TMAs employed in this study included cardiovascular, respiratory, gastrointestinal, hepatic and pancreatobiliary, oral, salivary, nasal, mammary, fetal, endocrine, genital tract, central and peripheral nervous systems, urinary tract, skin, cartilage, and other soft connective tissues. Immunohistochemistry and semiquantitative histomorphometric analysis confirmed the presence of AQP-1 in endothelial barriers of almost all tissues and in many epithelial barriers. AQP-1 was highly expressed in the renal cortex, choroid plexus, and pancreatic ducts. AQP-1 expression levels were surprisingly high in the anus, gallbladder, and liver; moderate expression was also detected in the hippocampus and ependymal cells of the central nervous system. This is the first report of AQP-1 protein distribution in normal human TMAs. These findings confirm the presence of AQP-1 in human endothelia and selected water-transporting epithelia and several new locations, including mammary epithelium, articular chondrocytes, synoviocytes, and synovial microvessels where AQP-1 may be involved in milk production, chondrocyte volume regulation, synovial fluid secretion, and homeostasis, respectively. 相似文献

Space exploration has the potential to yield exciting and significant discoveries, but it also brings with it many risks for flight crews. Among the less well studied of these are health effects from space radiation, which includes the highly charged, energetic particles of elements with high atomic numbers that constitute the galactic cosmic rays. In this study, we demonstrated that 1 Gy iron ions acutely administered to mice in vivo resulted in highly complex chromosome damage. We found that all types of aberrations, including dicentrics as well as translocations, insertions and acentric fragments, disappear rapidly with time after exposure, probably as a result of the death of heavily damaged cells, i.e. cells with multiple and/or complex aberrations. In addition, numerous cells have apparently simple exchanges as their only aberrations, and these cells appear to survive longer than heavily damaged cells. Eight weeks after exposure, the frequency of cells showing cytogenetic damage was reduced to less than 20% of the levels evident at 1 week, with little further decline apparent over an additional 8 weeks. These results indicate that exposure to 1 Gy iron ions produces heavily damaged cells, a small fraction of which appear to be capable of surviving for relatively long periods. The health effects of exposure to high-LET radiation in humans on prolonged space flights should remain a matter of concern. 相似文献

Aquaporins (AQPs) play fundamental roles in water and osmolyte homeostasis by facilitating water and small solute movement across plasma membranes of epithelial, endothelial, and other tissues. AQP proteins are abundantly expressed in the mammalian kidney, where they have been shown to play essential roles in fluid balance and urine concentration. Thus far, the majority of studies on renal AQPs have been carried out in laboratory rodents and sheep; no data have been published on the expression of AQPs in kidneys of equines or other large mammals. The aim of this comparative study was to determine the expression and nephron segment localization of AQP1-4 in Equus caballus by immunoblotting and immunohistochemistry with custom-designed rabbit polyclonal antisera. AQP1 was found in apical and basolateral membranes of the proximal convoluted tubules and thin descending limbs of the loop of Henle. AQP2 expression was specifically detected in apical membranes of cortical, medullary, and papillary collecting ducts. AQP3 was expressed in basolateral membranes of cortical, medullary, and papillary collecting ducts. Immunohistochemistry also confirmed AQP4 expression in basolateral membranes of cells lining the distal convoluted and connecting tubules. Western blots revealed high expression of AQP1-4 in the equine kidney. These observations confirm that AQPs are expressed in the equine kidney and are found in similar nephron locations to mouse, rat, and human kidney. Equine renal AQP proteins are likely to be involved in acute and chronic regulation of body fluid composition and may be implicated in water balance disorders brought about by colic and endotoxemia. 相似文献

of badgers with the human BCG vaccine (Bacille Calmette Guerin) is considered as an important strategy to reduce the burden
of disease in this species, and a pragmatic approach is likely to involve oral vaccination. In this study, we evaluated nine
different flavours for use as attractants in a prototype oral vaccine bait for European badgers (M. meles): aniseed, apple, cocoa powder, carob powder, curry, fish, garlic, peanut and strawberry. The bait matrix was composed of
a natural lipid formulation, developed as a vehicle for oral vaccination against tuberculosis in wildlife. A ‘food for work’
paradigm was employed during the trials to ensure the animals were actively seeking the baits. The trials showed carob and
cocoa powders were equally attractive and more attractive than any of the other candidates. Carob and cocoa show potential

SummaryThe objective of this investigation was to use semi-quantitative immunohistochemistry to determine the distribution and expression levels of AQP2 and AQP3 proteins in normal human Tissue MicroArrays. Expression of the vasopressin regulated AQP2 was observed in a limited number of tissues. AQP2 was prominent in the apical and subapical plasma membranes of cortical and medullary renal collecting ducts. Surprisingly, weak AQP2 immunoreactivity was also noted in pancreatic islets, fallopian tubes and peripheral nerves. AQP2 was also localized to selected parts of the central nervous system (ependymal cell layer, subcortical white matter, hippocampus, spinal cord) and selected cells in the gastrointestinal system (antral and oxyntic gastric mucosa, small intestine and colon). These findings corroborate the restricted tissue distribution of AQP2. AQP3 was strongly expressed in many of the human tissues examined particularly in basolateral membranes of the distal nephron (medullary collecting ducts), distal colon, upper airway epithelia, transitional epithelium of the urinary bladder, tracheal, bronchial and nasopharyngeal epithelium, stratified squamous epithelial cells of the esophagus, and anus. AQP3 was moderately expressed in basolateral membranes of prostatic tubuloalveolar epithelium, pancreatic ducts, uterine endometrium, choroid plexus, articular chondrocytes, subchondral osteoblasts and synovium. Low AQP3 levels were also detected in skeletal muscle, cardiac muscle, gastric pits, seminiferous tubules, lymphoid vessels, salivary and endocrine glands, amniotic membranes, placenta and ovary.
