The morphology of winter buds, shoot growth and branching architecturewas studied in evergreen broad-leaved trees of subtropical/warm-temperaterain forests of southern and central Japan. Winter buds werecategorized into three types based on external morphology anddevelopmental processes: naked, hypsophyllary and scaled buds.Each shoot tip with intermittent growth was covered with a smallnumber of immature leaves or hypsophylls when growth ceased.Hypsophylls protect the apical meristem during its resting period,hence we termed them hypsophyllary buds. In trees with nakedbuds, immature leaves resumed their growth and developed tomature leaves the following spring; thus these trees had nospecial organs to cover shoot tips during winter. In trees withhypsophyllary buds, some hypsophylls covering the shoot tipsthrough the year were shed without further growth when new shootsstarted to grow in the spring. In trees with scaled buds, newlygrowing shoots had hypsophyllary buds at their tips in spring.After the completion of stem elongation, the buds were replacedby scaled buds (often covered with more than 30 scales) in summer.These scaled buds grew during autumn and winter until a newflush of growth the following spring. The three bud types correspondedto forest stratification in the northern-limit forest: the nakedbuds of Rubiaceae and Myrsinaceae in the ground layer; the hypsophyllarybuds of various families (e.g. Symplocaceae, Myrsinaceae) inthe understorey; and the scaled buds of Fagaceae and Lauraceaein the forest canopy. The position and activity of buds on abranch were reflected in the architectural patterns of the treesin different layers of the forest. The scaled-bud trees hadwell-protected, abundant axillary buds and are probably suitedto survive in the forest canopy (with frequent disturbances),whereas the single terminal bud of hypsophyllary-bud trees cansurvive in the less disturbed, resource-limited understoreyof the forest.Copyright 1998 Annals of Botany Company Bud structural type; bud formation; bud growth; shoot elongation; shoot-growth cycle; branching architecture; forest stratification.  相似文献

H^-adenosine triphosphatase (H^ -ATPase) activity was demonstrated cytochemically in autophagic vacuoles(AVs) of rat hepatocytes using a modification of the method for the demonstration of neutral p-nitrophenyl phosphatase(p-NPPase) activity[1].When an inhibitor of H^ -ATPase,N-ethylmaleimide (NEM) or 4,4‘-diisothiocyanostilbene-2,2‘disulfonic acid,disodium salt (DIDS) was included in the incubation medium the enyzme activity was abolished indicating that p-NPPase demonstrated in this study represents H^ -ATPase.Autophagy was induced by a single intraperitoneal injection of vinblastine sulfate(VBL).The number of AVs increased remarkably in hepatocytes from 40 min after VBL treatment.H^ -ATPase activity was observed mainly on the membranes of lysosomes and AVs.However,early forms of AVs containing only incompletely digested material showed no H^ -ATPase activity.Most AVs revealing a positive reaction seemed to be in advanced stages of development.Acid phosphatase acticity was demonstrable in mature but not in early forms of AVs.The present investigation showed that membranes of advanced stage AVs possess an H^ -ATPase which may be derived from lysosomal membranes.  相似文献

Supplemental food in the form of millet seed was provided to 1-year-old and older (2:2-year-old) female Alpine Accentors Prunella collaris, and the effect on timing of breeding was studied over four breeding seasons in central Japan. Only 1-year-old females responded to the supplemental food: additional food advanced their settlement date, the onset of the development of a cloacal protuberance and laying date. In contrast, no effect of the experimental feeding was found on the timing of breeding in older females and they invariably bred earlier than 1-year-old females. Having settled on the breeding grounds, females developed the cloacal protuberance and retained it for about 1 month until the last egg in the first clutch was laid. The development period of the protuberance corresponded to the copulation period. Because the copulation period was not shortened by extra food and no significant difference occurred in either of the two age classes, it is necessary for earlier breeding birds to accumulate the nutrients needed to form the protuberance as well as the eggs. Although older females relied less on supplemental food, they were significantly heavier and formed the cloacal protuberance earlier than 1-year-old females. One-year-old females depended more heavily on supplemental food than did older ones and the duration between settlement date and the onset of development of the protuberance of 1-year-olds was reduced by additional food. These results raised the possibility that older females fly from their wintering grounds carrying some food reserves which they can use for forming the protuberance, while 1-year-old females collect the food needed for forming it on the breeding grounds.  相似文献

Receiving coastal waters and estuaries are among the most nutrient‐enriched environments on earth, and one of the symptoms of the resulting eutrophication is the proliferation of opportunistic, fast‐growing marine seaweeds. Here, we used a widespread macroalga often involved in blooms, Ulva spp., to investigate how supply of nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P), the two main potential growth‐limiting nutrients, influence macroalgal growth in temperate and tropical coastal waters ranging from low‐ to high‐nutrient supplies. We carried out N and P enrichment field experiments on Ulva spp. in seven coastal systems, with one of these systems represented by three different subestuaries, for a total of nine sites. We showed that rate of growth of Ulva spp. was directly correlated to annual dissolved inorganic nitrogen (DIN) concentrations, where growth increased with increasing DIN concentration. Internal N pools of macroalgal fronds were also linked to increased DIN supply, and algal growth rates were tightly coupled to these internal N pools. The increases in DIN appeared to be related to greater inputs of wastewater to these coastal waters as indicated by high δ15N signatures of the algae as DIN increased. N and P enrichment experiments showed that rate of macroalgal growth was controlled by supply of DIN where ambient DIN concentrations were low, and by P where DIN concentrations were higher, regardless of latitude or geographic setting. These results suggest that understanding the basis for macroalgal blooms, and management of these harmful phenomena, will require information as to nutrient sources, and actions to reduce supply of N and P in coastal waters concerned.  相似文献

Sedimentation behavior of sweet potato glucose 6-phosphate dehydrogenasewas studied using the sucrose density gradient centrifugation.The relative s value to s20, value of alcohol dehydrogenasewas determined to be about 6 in the absence of both NADP$ andglucose 6-phosphate. In the presence of NADP$, the enzyme wassedimented with a relative s value of about 9. Varied Tits Parus varius lived in flocks containing a pair, or a pair with one or two unpaired birds. To test whether the sociality of Varied Tits or their participation in mixed-species flocks is sensitive to additional food (sunflower seeds), we compared the following parameters between fed and unfed periods at the individual level: population size, degree of site fidelity, mono-specific flock size and the stability of its membership, home-range size and distribution, attendance rate with mixed-species flocks, and flock size. Neither the size of the mono-specific flock nor its membership was affected by food supply. Whether food was added or not, individuals exhibited a strong site fidelity resulting in stable population size. Supplemental feeding had no effect on home-range size or distribution. In the presence of extra food, Varied Tits were observed in mono-specific flocks but rarely in mixed-species flocks. However, when we stopped feeding, they shifted to mixed-species flocking. After adding food, mixed-species flocks were significantly smaller than in the control samples. Varied Tits were more likely to join mixed-species flocks as temperatures dropped and wind speed increased. These results suggest that intra-specific sociality of Varied Tits is relatively insensitive to food supply, but they easily shift to mixed-species flocking in relation to food and weather conditions. We conclude that Varied Tits participate in mixed-species flocks to obtain short-term benefits e.g. increased foraging efficiency but they also obtain long-term benefits from stability of pair bonds and strong site fidelity, which did not respond to supplemental food.  相似文献

Glycogen phosphorylase in Tetrahymena pyriformis was activated by a Mg2+ ATP-dependent process and this activation was further increased by the addition of cyclic AMP. When the enzyme activity in subcellular fractions was measured, it was largely associated with the glycogen fraction but was no longer activated by ATP and cyclic AMP. Mixing the glycogen fraction and cytosol fraction together restored the effects of ATP and cyclic AMP on phosphorylase activity. These findings suggest that glycogen phosphorylase associated with Tetrahymena glycogen granules may be regulated by cytosolic factor(s) with cyclic AMP.  相似文献

The spacing system of Alpine Accentors Prunella collaris was studied on the summit of Mt. Norikura in central Japan for five breeding seasons. This species lived in groups (mean 7.2 individuals), sharing large areas of their individual home ranges within which all activities occurred. Membership of a group was closed and stable within a breeding season. The group home ranges overlapped little with each other, and antagonistic behaviour, including communal defence, was observed at the boundaries. Each female established an exclusive area around her own nest which she defended against other females (but not males) within the shared home range, but her activities (feeding, singing and mating) were observed over the whole of the group home range. Members of the same group moved around and fed together within the home range during the prebreeding season, but individual birds tended to become more solitary as the breeding season progressed. These results suggest that the primary breeding unit of Alpine Accentors is a group consisting of five to ten members who share a group territory which contains all the resources necessary for living and breeding, but this species is not a typical social one in which all members move around together within their group territory.  相似文献

Glucose 6-phosphate dehydrogenase was purified about 290-foldfrom sweet potato root tissue. The molecular weight was estimatedto be 110,000 by Bio-Gel 300 column chromatography. A LINEWEAVER-BURKplot of the reciprocal rate against reciprocal glucose 6-phosphateconcentration was concave downwards. A HILL coefficient lessthan 1 was obtained at lower concentrations of glucose 6-phosphate(below 0.5 mM). These results suggest that binding of glucose6-phosphate to the enzyme occurs with negative cooperativity. (Received April 30, 1970; )  相似文献
