Comparative larval morphology was used to elucidate phylogenetic relationships within the Pinnotheridae and the Dissodactylus species complex. Within the family, seven zoeal and six megalopal characters suggested two equally parsimonious phylogenetic hypotheses for pinnotherid larvae, both with Ostracotheres tridacnae representing the sister group for the Dissodactylus complex. Results indicated that the genus Pinnotheres is a polyphyletic taxon, and that the traditional subfamilial arrangement comprises paraphyletic taxa within the subfamilies Pinnotherinae and Pinnothereliinae. Certain evidence has suggested that Fabia and Juxtafubia should be excluded from the Pinnotherinae and placed into the Pinnothereliinae. Larval and adult morphology suggested that Pinnotheres politus should be included within Tumidotheres. The phylogenetic analysis within the Dissodactylus complex involved one zoeal and 16 megalopal characters. Results suggested a single phylogenetic hypothesis based on larval morphology. Combining adult morphology with larval evidence resulted in two equally parsimonious phylogenetic hypotheses, one of which agreed with a previously suggested hypothesis based only on adult characters. 相似文献

ABSTRACT. The ultrastructure of the developmental stages of the myxozoan Enteromyxum leei parasitizing gilthead seabream ( Sparus aurata ) intestine and sharpsnout sea bream ( Diplodus puntazzo ) intestine and gallbladder are described. The earliest stage observed was a small dense trophozoite located among enterocytes. Proliferative stages, observed intercellularly in the epithelium of the intestine and gallbladder as well as in the lumen, possessed the typical cell-in-cell configuration throughout their development. Secondary cells were seen undergoing division within a common vacuolar membrane that also encompassed pairs of tertiary cells. Cytochemical studies showed that primary cells stored mainly lipids whereas secondary cells stored abundant β-glycogen granules. Sporogonic development resembled that described for other disporous myxozoans. Within sporogonic stages, nonsporogonic secondary cells were observed accompanying two developing spores. Mature spores had a binucleated sporoplasm in which glycogen stores were abundant and no sporoplasmosomes were found. Our observations are discussed in relation to our knowledge on other myxozoans of the genus Enteromyxum . 相似文献

All bryophytes evolved desiccation tolerance (DT) mechanisms during the invasion of terrestrial habitats by early land plants. Are these DT mechanisms still present in bryophytes that colonize aquatic habitats? The aquatic bryophyte Fontinalis antipyretica Hedw. was subjected to two drying regimes and alterations in protein profiles and sucrose accumulation during dehydration and rehydration were investigated. Results show that during fast dehydration, there is very little variation in protein profiles, and upon rehydration proteins are leaked. On the other hand, slow dehydration induces changes in both dehydration and rehydration protein profiles, being similar to the protein profiles displayed by the terrestrial bryophytes Physcomitrella patens (Hedw.) Bruch and Schimp. and, to what is comparable with Syntrichia ruralis (Hedw.) F. Weber and D. Mohr. During dehydration there was a reduction in proteins associated with photosynthesis and the cytoskeleton, and an associated accumulation of proteins involved in sugar metabolism and plant defence mechanisms. Upon rehydration, protein accumulation patterns return to control values for both photosynthesis and cytoskeleton whereas proteins associated with sugar metabolism and defence proteins remain high. The current results suggest that bryophytes from different ecological adaptations may share common DT mechanisms. 相似文献

The identification of northern and southern components in different vertebrate species led researchers to accept a two‐component hypothesis for the Brazilian Atlantic forest (BAF). Nevertheless, neither a formal proposal nor a meta‐analysis to confirm this coincidence was ever made. Our main objective here was therefore to systematically test in how many vertebrate components the BAF could be divided by analysing existing empirical data. We used two approaches: (1) mapping and comparing the proposed areas of vertebrate endemism in the BAF and (2) analysing studies mentioning spatial subdivisions in distinct forest‐dependent vertebrates within the biome, by the use of panbiogeography. The four large‐scale endemism area components together with the six small‐scale panbiogeographical ones allowed the definition of three BAF greater regions, subdivided into nine vertebrate components, latitudinally and longitudinally organized. Empirical time estimates of the diversification events within the BAF were also reviewed. Diversification of these vertebrates occurred not only in the Pleistocene but also throughout the Miocene. Our results confirm the BAF's complex history, both in space and time. We propose that future research should be small‐scale and focused in the vertebrate components identified herein. Given the BAF's heterogeneity, studying via sections will be much more useful in identifying the BAF's historical biogeography. © 2012 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society, 2012, ??, ??–??. 相似文献

The present study attempts to review the systematics of Semele (Ruscaceae) in Madeira, based on phenotypic diversity. The variation in some vegetative (climbing shoot, second-order branches or 'phylloclades') and sexual (inflorescence and flowers) characters was analysed in 115 plant specimens from 30 field populations, herbaria of the Costa collection and Madeira Botanical Garden (MADJ) and certain gardens. Thirty-one quantitative and qualitative characters have been utilized in the analysis. Kaiser–Meyer–Olkin (KMO) analysis indicates adequate sampling. Principal component analysis (PCA) reveals that the spatial distribution of individuals has a discontinuous behaviour. Principal coordinate analysis (PCO) utilizing the Gower coefficient on standardized data revealed a significantly discontinuous distribution of individuals, such that two different clusters can be defined. The Student's t -test and Tukey test on separate characters, when individuals were classified according to the Costa classification, confirms the significant differences between grouping accessions. This leads to the recognition of two species within the genus in Madeira. Literature and herbarium studies show that these two taxa are conspecific with Semele androgyna (L.) Kunth sensu stricto (s.s.) and Semele menezesi Costa sensu lato (s.l.) . A separated statistical analysis of the S. androgyna cluster shows the possible existence of additional subgroups. Based on field population distribution, ecological behaviour and variation in features, we propose the recognition of two species, S. androgyna (L.) Kunth and S. menezesi (Costa) Pinheiro de Carvalho, and two subspecies S. androgyna (L.) Kunth androgyna Pinheiro de Carvalho and S. androgyna (L.) Kunth pterygophora Pinheiro de Carvalho. © 2004 The Linnean Society of London, Botanical Journal of the Linnean Society , 2004, 146 , 483–497. 相似文献

It seems increasingly clear that insulin is a hormone that doesnot occur exclusively in vertebrates. Several independent reportsnow exist giving evidence of insulin production in the digestivetissues of both deuterostomian and protostomian invertebrates.Cells with some light-microscopical and ultrastructural characteristicsof vertebrate B-cells have also been observed. Recently, evidencehas been obtained that insulin can act as a hypoglycemic hormone, promoting glycogen synthesis, also in a protostomian invertebrate, the gastropod mollusc, Strophocheilus oblongus. The endocrine pancreas of the cyclostomes occupies a key positionin the comparative endocrinology of the islet parenchyma andin the evolution of insulin production. It may represent anevolutionary link between the presumably gut-connected dispersedinsulin-producing cells of deuterostomian invertebrates andthe pancreatic islets of gnathostomian vertebrates. This hypothesiswas supported by the fact that cells with light-microscopicaland ultrastructural similarities to the islet B-cells were observedin the bile duct mucosa of the hagfish, Myxine glutinosa. However, immunofluorescent studies with antisera against human insulinand C-peptide did not show any immunoreactive material outsidethe B-cells of the endocrine pancreas. Particular attentionwas paid to elucidate the biological significance of the largecystic cavities that are so typical for the cyclostomian isletparenchyma. The working hypothesis that they may contain storedinsulin, proinsulin (or even "proto-proinsulin") was not supportedby immunofluorescence, autoradiographic, or ultrastructuralinvestigations, nor by proinsulin assays. It is possible thathagfish islet B-cells contain zinc, despite the fact that theamino acid residue in B10-position is aspartic acid insteadof histidine. The biosynthesis of hagfish insulin shows a patternsimilar to that in gnathostomes. Its rate is related to theambient temperature and at 11 C the conversion of proinsulinto insulin lasts several days. 相似文献
