Photosynthetic leaf traits were determined for savanna and forest ecosystems in West Africa, spanning a large range in precipitation. Standardized major axis fits revealed important differences between our data and reported global relationships. Especially for sites in the drier areas, plants showed higher photosynthetic rates for a given N or P when compared with relationships from the global data set. The best multiple regression for the pooled data set estimated Vcmax and Jmax from NDW and S. However, the best regression for different vegetation types varied, suggesting that the scaling of photosynthesis with leaf traits changed with vegetation types. A new model is presented representing independent constraints by N and P on photosynthesis, which can be evaluated with or without interactions with S. It assumes that limitation of photosynthesis will result from the least abundant nutrient, thereby being less sensitive to the allocation of the non‐limiting nutrient to non‐photosynthetic pools. The model predicts an optimum proportionality for N and P, which is distinct for Vcmax and Jmax and inversely proportional to S. Initial tests showed the model to predict Vcmax and Jmax successfully for other tropical forests characterized by a range of different foliar N and P concentrations.  相似文献

The symbiont-containing Blastocrithidia culicis from Aedes vexans, unlike most lower trypanosomatids cultivated in defined media, require only three amino acids: methionine, histidine, and arginine; only three vitamins: thiamin, nicotinamide, and riboflavin; and neither heme nor purine. Procedures have been developed to standardize the multiplicationstage during mature cork-oak (Quercus suber L.) micropropagation.Axillary and terminal buds were established on Gresshoff andDoy basal medium containing 1 mg I–1 of 6-benzylaminopurine(BAP). Initiation of cultures was possible all over the year.The effects of BAP, Z, IBA, 1AA and NAA and various nutrientformulae on shoot growth and proliferation was investigated.BAP was more suitable than zeatin. Shoot proliferation and elongationwere strongly improved by the combination BAP/IAA in the presenceof low salt media, like Gresshoff and Doy or Woody Plant medium.Both rates were significantly increased when a double-phaseculture system was used. Shoots have been multiplied for 1 yearat the rate of three to four-fold every 4 weeks without anydecline of vigour. Rooting was achieved by briefly dipping thebasal ends of in vitro regenerated shoots in an IBA concentratedsolution. The results here reported constitute a promising steptowards large scale in vitro propagation of a species in whichconventional vegetative propagation by cuttings is very difficult. The rate of change in dormancy level and light requirement,induced during stratification at 3.2 °C, was investigatedin seeds ofStellaria media, Cerastium fontanum, Veronica agrestisandTaraxacumofficinale.Two stratification environments, soil and wet filterpaper in petri-dishes, were used. On nine occasions during a6 week stratification period, germination was tested under threelight conditions at 3.5/18.5 °C: (1) darkness; (2) light;and (3) short-term light exposure followed by darkness. Priorto stratification, germination in all species was 89% in lightand 53% in darkness. Within 2 weeks of stratification, germinabilityinV. agrestisandS. mediaseeds decreased in all treatments. InC.fontanumandT. officinaleseeds, germinability also decreasedafter 2 weeks but only in the dark treatment, indicating inductionof a light requirement. After two more weeks of stratification,the induced dormancy inS. mediaseeds stratified in soil becameweaker and the light requirement inT. officinaleseeds was lost.Differences between the two stratification environments and/orinteractions between light conditions, stratification environmentsand time were found for all species. These results suggest that:(1) the dormancy level and the light requirement of seeds maychange dramatically over relatively short-time periods duringstratification; and (2) germinability depends on the stratificationenvironment experienced by the seeds. We studied the process of offspring production in queenless colonies of Acromyrmex subterraneus brunneus, and particularly evaluated the ovary development of workers as a function of their age. For this, subcolonies were set up and evaluated at different periods of isolation from the queen (2, 4 and 6 months), besides individually labeled age groups. The subcolonies were assessed according to offspring production and ovaries containing oocytes or not. The evaluations showed worker oviposition and development of males originating from worker-laid eggs. At 2 months' absence of the queen, eggs and larvae were found, with eggs in a higher proportion than larvae. After 4 months, the proportion of eggs had reduced while larvae had increased, and a pupa was found in one subcolony. At 6 months, besides a higher share of larvae, one pupa and one adult male were found. Dissection of workers revealed ovaries containing oocytes during the periods of evaluation. Only a group of medium-sized and large workers, 23.3%, 20.9% and 37.5% of the population from each period assessed in queenless subcolonies respectively, presented developed oocytes in the ovary. The same was observed in colonies with a queen, with 17.6%, 19.6% and 7.8% of the group of dissected workers from each time period, respectively. With respect to worker age, we observed by dissection of the ovary, that the greatest percentage of individuals with ovarioles containing oocytes occurred at 45 days (6 weeks) up to 90 days (12 weeks). These results probably are associated with the workers reproduction and the laying of trophic and reproductive eggs in colonies with and without a queen; these eggs have distinct functions in each situation.  相似文献

“ALL mice, cats and virtually all chickens seem to be completely refractory to developing antibody to the group-specific, gs, antigens characteristic of the RNA tumour viruses of their own species.”1 This is explained on the basis of an immune tolerance induced in early embryonic life by the expression of these antigens before the development of immune competence. Avian group-specific (gs) antibody has been demonstrated in the sera of immunized chickens by the immunodiffusion (Ouchterlony)2 and complement fixation inhibition3 tests. This report is to record the production of gs antibody in a cat which had been immunized with gs antigen from disrupted feline leukaemia virus (FeLV).  相似文献
