Serratia marcescens, a Gram-negative bacillus that belongs to the family Enterobacteriaceae, is a human opportunistic pathogen bacterium that causes many diseases, such as urinary tract infections, respiratory tract infections, bacteremia, conjunctivitis, endocarditis, meningitis and wound infections. Many plasmides that confers multi-drug resistance were discovered, such as virulence factors, like cytotoxins that damage epithelial cells. The main topic of this paper presents a review about the molecular traits evolved in the pathogenic processes mediated by Serratia and its mechanism of resistance to drugs. 相似文献

In 2009, the World Health Organization (WHO) issued a new guideline that stratifies
dengue-affected patients into severe (SD) and non-severe dengue (NSD) (with or
without warning signs). To evaluate the new recommendations, we completed a
retrospective cross-sectional study of the dengue haemorrhagic fever (DHF) cases
reported during an outbreak in 2011 in northeastern Brazil. We investigated 84
suspected DHF patients, including 45 (53.6%) males and 39 (46.4%) females. The ages
of the patients ranged from five-83 years and the median age was 29. According to the
DHF/dengue shock syndrome classification, 53 (63.1%) patients were classified as
having dengue fever and 31 (36.9%) as having DHF. According to the 2009 WHO
classification, 32 (38.1%) patients were grouped as having NSD [4 (4.8%) without
warning signs and 28 (33.3%) with warning signs] and 52 (61.9%) as having SD. A
better performance of the revised classification in the detection of severe clinical
manifestations allows for an improved detection of patients with SD and may reduce
deaths. The revised classification will not only facilitate effective screening and
patient management, but will also enable the collection of standardised surveillance
data for future epidemiological and clinical studies. 相似文献

This population study, which evaluated two parasitological methods for the diagnosis of schistosomiasis mansoni, was performed in a low-transmission area in Pedra Preta, Montes Claros, Minas Gerais, Brazil. A total of 201 inhabitants of the rural area participated in this research. Four stool samples were obtained from all participants and analysed using the Kato-Katz method (18 slides) and a commercial test, the TF-Test?, which was performed quantitatively. The data were analysed to determine prevalence, the sensitivity of the diagnostic methods, the worm burden and the definition of the "gold standard", which was obtained by totalling the results of all samples examined using the Kato-Katz technique and the TF-Test?. The results showed that the prevalence obtained from the examination of one Kato-Katz slide (the methodology adopted by the Brazilian control programme) was 8% compared to 35.8% from the "gold standard", which was a 4.5-fold difference. This result indicates that the prevalence of schistosomiasis in so-called low-transmission areas is significantly underestimated. 相似文献

Although Rio de Janeiro is one of the best sampled states of Brazil for bats, there are still some poorly studied islands on its coast. Hence, we inventoried the bat species of an island on the southwestern coast of Rio de Janeiro, compared five sites sampled within this island, and compared its bat community with seven other sites in the same region. We carried out sampling in July 1995 and from September 2006 to August 2010, comprising 58 samplings. We captured a total of 1502 individuals of 25 bat species with mist nets set far from roosts, or close to or inside roosts. The most abundant species were Artibeus lituratus, Molossus molossus, and Carollia perspicillata. Total sampling effort was 89,400 m2 h. The present study was one out of five inventories carried out in the southwestern coast of Rio de Janeiro that registered more than 1000 bat individuals from more than 24 bat species. Long-term inventories on islands are still needed, because they can result in a large number of species and captures as observed in the present study. 相似文献

Muscle co-contraction after anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction: Influence of functional level
Lustosa LP Ocarino JM de Andrade MA Pertence AE Bittencourt NF Fonseca ST 《Journal of electromyography and kinesiology》2011,21(6):1050-1055
Background
ACL reconstruction is recommended to improve function in subjects with ligament injuries. However, after surgery, some individuals are not able to return to their pre-injury functional level. The mechanisms related to this incapacity are not well understood.Study design
Cross-sectional study.Methods
Co-contraction levels were assessed in individuals who returned to their pre-injury functional level and in 10 individuals who were not able to return to full activity after unilateral ACL reconstruction. Electromyography of the vastus lateralis and biceps femoris muscles before and after sudden perturbations applied during the stance phase of walking was used to calculate co-contraction.Results
The involved limb had lower co-contraction pre-perturbation than the non-involved limb in both groups (p = 0.049). The co-contraction level post-perturbation was significantly higher in the limited return group than in the full return group (p = 0.03).Conclusion
Decreased co-contraction in the involved limb before perturbation may be caused by sensorial changes resulting from surgery or injury. Increased co-contraction levels observed in the limited return group after perturbation may be a compensatory mechanism to make up for possible decreased intrinsic stability of the knee joint.Clinical relevance
Increased co-contraction after perturbation does not contribute to knee stability. 相似文献8.

HER2 assessment in biopsy specimens of gastric cancer (GC) is challenging because of the intratumoral heterogeneity. False negative results may be get because of limited biopsy material. The aim of this study is to explore how tumor-containing fragment number and biopsy specimen number affect HER2 immunohistochemistry (IHC) positive rate. Eight hundred and ninety biopsy specimens and 459 paired resected specimens were collected. IHC staining of HER2 was performed. HER2 IHC positive (scored 3+) rate was compared based on tumor-containing fragment number, biopsy specimen number, average size and tumor tissue proportion of tumor-containing fragments. The positive predictability of biopsy specimens to resected specimens was analyzed based on tumor fragment number. HER2 IHC positive rates were 2.0, 3.5, 7.0, 13.2, 17.1, and 15.9% when tumor fragment numbers were 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6 respectively. The rate rose with the increase of tumor fragment number (P = 0.004). ROC curve analysis showed that biopsy specimens exhibited positive predictability when tumor fragment number reached 3, but showed better performance when the number was ≥4 (P < 0.05). After fragment number reached 4, no statistic differences were reached in either HER2 IHC positive rate or positive predictability with further increase of the number (P > 0.05). HER2 IHC positive rate was not associated with biopsy number (P = 0.127), average size of tumor fragments (P = 0.397), and tumor tissue proportion of tumor fragments (P = 0.825) directly. The number of tumor-containing fragments influences HER2 IHC positive (scored 3+) rate. Greater than or equal to 4 (≥4) tumor fragments give better results in the positive rate as well as positive predictability. We recommend the number of tumor containing fragments be described in the HER2 IHC pathology reports for clinical reference in endoscopic biopsy specimens of GC. 相似文献

We tested the attraction of Triatoma dimidiata and T. pallidipennis to traps baited with yeast volatiles. Two traps were simultaneously presented in opposite sides of an experimental arena. One trap presented a yeast culture in sucrose solution, while the other contained sucrose solution as control. A first experimental series was done without offering a central refuge for bugs. In a second series, one shelter where the insects could hide was offered and the traps were presented afterwards. In the first series, yeast baited traps attracted significantly more insects than control ones for both species. In the second series, T. pallidipennis was significantly attracted to yeast, whereas T. dimidiata was not attracted. The potential use of yeast baited traps for capturing these vectors of Chagas disease is discussed. 相似文献
