We studied grooming among adults of a one-male multifemale troop of free-ranging Hanuman langurs (Presbytis entellus)living near Jodhpur, India, for 9 years. The 11–13 females devoted about 6% of their day to allogrooming. Adult males, whose tenures averaged 2.2 years, were transient figures in the troop's history, as reflected by their rather peripheral role in the grooming network. Females groomed males 4–40 times more frequently (1006 episodes) than vice versa- (176 episodes). Adult females received 97% of all grooming from other adult females (6655 episodes). Although females exhibited an age- inversed dominance hierarchy, they did not compete for grooming access to particular troop mates. Dyads of all possible rank differences occurred as frequently as expected: 51% of grooming was directed up the hierarchy and 49% down it. Young, high- ranking individuals gave and received significantly more grooming than the oldest, low- ranking females did. The pattern seemed to be influenced by kin selection because of the presumably high degree of female relatedness. They invested most in troopmates with the highest reproductive value, i.e., the youngest individuals. This trend was coupled with a preference of closest kin (mothers and daughters). Reciprocity was the outstanding feature since all adult females groomed and were groomed by all others. Such a tight social net might establish the necessary cohesion during frequent territorial disputes with neighboring troops.  相似文献

Ecological conditions, feeding and ranging behaviour as well as physical condition of female Hanuman langurs ( Presbytis entellus ) were studied in order to analyse the major influences on the timing of reproductive events. The langurs inhabited a semi-evergreen forest dominated by Sal trees ( Skorea robusta ). The climate was dominated by the summer monsoon lasting from May to September. Availability of plant phytophases was markedly seasonal, with fruiting as well as flushing of the six main food plants during the monsoon. Feeding and ranging behaviour of the females varied with food availability and its distribution. High dietary quality was only obtained during a short period from May to July. Physical condition of the females varied in accordance with dietary quality and energy expenditure, with a good physical condition during the second half of the year. Births occurred from January until June, with most births around the energetically worst period of the year. The results indicate that, in contrast to several other non-human primates, most females of this population gave birth too early to meet the optimum lactation requirements. Complete weaning mainly took place during an energetically bad time of the year (October to December). However, it can be inferred that the reduction of suckling bouts prior to the next conception took place when high quality food was available. Conceptions were confined to the months of July to November, coinciding with the time of best physical condition. Moreover, females who conceived were in a better physical condition than those who failed to conceive, suggesting a primary influence of nutrition on the probability of conception. Seasonality and timing of births may be the result of a regular seasonal shortfall of resources influencing the ability of the females to ovulate and to conceive.  相似文献

The GrpE protein from E. coli is a homodimer with an unusual structure of two long paired α-helices from each monomer interacting in a parallel arrangement to form a “tail” at the N-terminal end. Using site-directed mutagenesis, we show that there is a key electrostatic interaction involving R57 (mediated by a water molecule) that provides thermal stability to this “tail” region. The R57A mutant showed a drop in T m of 8.5°C and a smaller ΔH u (unfolding) compared to wild-type for the first unfolding transition, but no significant decrease in dimer stability as shown through equilibrium analytical ultracentrifugation studies. Another mutant (E94A) at the dimer interface showed a decrease in ΔH u but no drop in T m for the second unfolding transition and a slight increase in dimer stability.  相似文献

Understanding female reproductive characteristics is important for assessing fertility, interpreting female behavior, and designing appropriate conservation and captive management plans. In primate species lacking morphological signs of receptivity, such as most colobines, determination of reproductive parameters depends on the analysis of reproductive hormones. Here, we use fecal hormone analysis to characterize cycle patterns (N=6 females) and gestation length (N=7 females) in a group of wild Phayre's leaf monkeys (Trachypithecus phayrei crepusculus) in Phu Khieo Wildlife Sanctuary, Thailand. We found that both fecal estrogen (fE) and progestin (fP) levels showed clear biological patterns indicative of ovulation and conception. However, because fP patterns were inadequate in determining the end of the luteal phase, we used fE rather than fP patterns to delineate menstrual cycle parameters. We found a mean cycle length of 28.4 days (N=10), with follicular and luteal phases of 15.4 (N=10) and 12.5 days (N=14), respectively. On average, females underwent 3.57 (N=7) cycles until conception. Average gestation length was 205.3 days (N=7), with fE levels increasing over the course of pregnancy. Overall, the reproductive characteristics found for Phayre's leaf monkeys were consistent with results for other colobine species, suggesting that fecal hormone monitoring, particularly for fE metabolites, can provide useful reproductive information for this species. QTLs for grain carbon isotope discrimination in field-grown barley   总被引:4,自引:4,他引:0  
In several crops including cereals, carbon isotope discrimination (Delta) has been associated with drought tolerance in terms of water-use efficiency and yield stability in drought-prone environments. By using a complete genetic map generated from 167 recombinant inbred lines from a cross between Tadmor and Er/Apm, QTLs associated with grain Delta have been detected in barley grown in three Mediterranean field environments, two differing only in water availability. Ten QTLs were identified: one was specific to one environment, two presented interaction with the environment, six presented main effects across three or two environments and one presented both effects. Heading date did not contribute to the environment (E) and G x E effects acting on Delta. Seasonal rainfall and the ratio of rainfall to evapo-transpiration made large contributions to the environmental effect, but their influence on G x E was weaker. Eight QTLs for Delta co-located with QTLs for physiological traits related to plant water status and/or osmotic adjustment, and/or for agronomic traits previously measured on the same population. Some perspectives in terms of characterising drought tolerance are evoked.  相似文献

A combined electrochemical and FTIR spectroscopic approach was used to identify the vibrational modes of tyrosines in cytochrome c oxidase from Paracoccus denitrificans which change upon electron transfer and coupled proton transfer. Electrochemically induced FTIR difference spectra of the Tyr-D4-labeled cytochrome c oxidase reveal that only small contributions arise from the tyrosines. Contributions between 1600 and 1560 cm(-1) are attributed to nu8a/8b(CC) ring modes. The nu19(CC) ring mode for the protonated form of tyrosines is proposed to absorb with an uncommonly small signal at 1525-1518 cm(-1) and for the deprotonated form at 1496-1486 cm(-1), accompanied by the increase of the nu19(CC) ring mode of the Tyr-D(4)-labeled oxidase at approximately 1434 cm(-1). A signal at 1270 cm(-1) can be tentatively attributed to the nu7'a(CO) and delta(COH) mode of a protonated tyrosine. Uncommon absorptions, like the mode at 1524 cm(-1), indicate the involvement of Tyr280 in the spectra. Tyr280 is a crucial residue close to the binuclear center and is covalently bonded to His276. The possible changes of the spectral properties are discussed together with the absorbance spectra of tyrosine bound to histidine. The vibrational modes of Tyr280 are further analyzed in combination with the mutation to histidine, which is assumed to abolish the covalent bonding. The electrochemically induced FTIR difference spectra of the Tyr280His mutant point to a change in protonation state in the environment of the binuclear center. Together with an observed decrease of a signal at 1736 cm(-1), previously assigned to Glu278, a possible functional coupling is reflected. In direct comparison to the FTIR difference spectra of the D4-labeled compound and comparing the spectra at pH 7 and 4.8, the protonation state of Tyr280 is discussed. Furthermore, a detailed analysis of the mutant is presented, the FTIR spectra of the CO adduct revealing a partial loss of Cu(B). Electrochemical redox titrations reflect a downshift of the heme a3 midpoint potential by 95 +/- 10 mV. Another tyrosine identified to show redox dependent changes upon electron transfer is Tyr35, a residue in the proposed D-pathway of the cytochrome c oxidase.  相似文献

We have recently shown that the physiological mediator of granule-mediated apoptosis is a macromolecular complex of granzymes and perforin complexed with the chondroitin-sulfate proteoglycan, serglycin (Metkar, S. S., Wang, B., Aguilar-Santelises, M., Raja, S. M., Uhlin-Hansen, L., Podack, E., Trapani, J. A., and Froelich, C. J. (2002) Immunity 16, 417-428). We now report our biophysical studies establishing the nature of granzyme B-serglycin (GrB.SG) complex. Dynamic laser light scattering studies establish that SG has a hydrodynamic radius of approximately 140 +/- 23 nm, comparable to some viral particles. Agarose mobility shift gels and surface plasmon resonance (SPR), show that SG binds tightly to GrB and has the capacity to hold 30-60 GrB molecules. SPR studies also indicate equivalent binding affinities (K(d) approximately 0.8 microm), under acidic (granule pH) and neutral isotonic conditions (extra-cytoplasmic pH), for GrB.SG interaction. Finally, characterization of GrB.SG interactions within granules revealed complexes of two distinct molecular sizes, one held approximately 4-8 molecules of GrB, whereas the other contained as many as 32 molecules of GrB or other granule proteins. These studies provide a firm biophysical basis for our earlier reported observations that the proapoptotic granzyme is exocytosed predominantly as a macromolecular complex with SG.  相似文献

Within phylogenetic limits reproductive characteristics of a given species may vary between populations in response to ecological and social factors. For instance, in environments where high quality nutrition is readily available, the onset and speed of reproduction are often accelerated. Other influencing factors might be maternal experience or the sex of the infant. Here we present data on reproductive characteristics for the silvered leaf monkey (Trachypithecus cristatus), a medium‐sized Asian colobine housed at the Wildlife Conservation Society's Bronx Zoo as a one‐male group. To place the species into an appropriate phylogenetic context, we limited our comparison to other colobine species. Demographic data span 21.4 years (October 1985 to March 2007) and derive from 30 adult females (128.0 female years). Detailed behavioral data stem from a 2.2 years study (November 2002 to January 2005; 734 days, 4,225 hr). As in other Asian colobines, receptive periods were short (mean=4.3 days, n=68). This is expected for one‐male groups where receptivity likely indicates, rather than conceals, ovulation. Gestation length was estimated based on a change in the pattern of sexual behavior (mean=194.6 days, n=7). It fell within the range reported for the taxon. Births occurred year round, at an early age (mean=2.9 years, n=8), at short intervals (mean=14.9 months, n=59) in combination with a short lactation (mean 12.1 months, n=9) likely due to the nearly unlimited availability of nutrition in this zoo setting. Primiparous females tended to have a longer first interbirth interval but infant survival rates were similar to multipara possibly due to the absence of predators. Maternal investment was independent of the infant's sex and birth sex ratio was even. Our results emphasize that when interpreted with caution, zoo populations yield realistic reproductive characteristics that can help fill the gap in our knowledge about colobine life history. Am. J. Human females, unlike most mammals, are sexually active outside of fertile periods. This decoupling of sexual behavior from its conceptive function has had an enormous impact on human social relationships, and yet we know little about why there was selection for nonconceptive mating. Here we examine one form of nonconceptive mating, the mating that occurs during pregnancy or post‐conceptive (PC) mating, in wild western gorillas (Gorilla gorilla). Using a near complete mating record for five females during gestation, we show that pregnant females varied in the timing and frequency of mating, and used PC mating conditionally, synchronizing copulations to occur on days when other females mated, and refraining from mating for lengthy periods when no other females mated. As pregnant females mated exclusively with the same male before and after conception, and mated in response to group female (and not male) behavior, we conclude that western gorillas used PC mating as a form of female competition, and not to confuse paternity or to obtain immediate benefits from the male, as suggested earlier. The male initiated copulations preferentially with females of high rank, rather than distinguishing between pregnant and cycling females. Therefore, PC mating appears to be a strategy by which high‐ranking pregnant females attempt to minimize male interest in other females, while reinforcing their own status and potentially delaying conception in others. These findings indicate that female‐mating competition is more important than considered earlier, and may be a factor in the evolution of nonconceptive mating in humans. Am. J.
