This study describes the composition, structure and distribution of coastal dune vegetation near Malindi, Kenya. The vegetation was made up of 156 plant species. Sixty families were recorded with Gramineae (seventeen species) and Papilionaceae (sixteen species) being the most widely represented. Fifteen plant communities were described in the different geomorphologic units. The plant communities exhibited a distinct zonal distribution. Halopyrum mucronatum and Ipomoea pes‐caprae plant communities were common in the unstable geomorphologic units. Cordia somaliensis and Pluchea dioscoridis plant communities were common in the more stable geomorphologic units. Most of the plants in the more stable geomorphologic units were shrubs and trees. Succulent herbs were identified in the slacks and the drowned valley, which have moist and damp environments.  相似文献

Mangrove forests are active carbon sinks and important for nutrient cycling in coastal ecosystems. Restoration of degraded mangrove habitats enhances return of ecosystem goods and services, including carbon sequestration. Our objective was to assess the restoration of primary productivity of reforested mangrove stands in comparison with natural reference stands in Gazi Bay, Kenya. Litter fall data were collected in nine Rhizophora mucronata and Sonneratia alba monospecific stands by use of litter traps over 2 years. Litter was emptied monthly, dried, sorted, and weighed. The reforested and natural stands showed seasonality patterns only in the production of reproductive material. Leaves constituted the highest percentage to total litter fall. Litter productivity rates for the R. mucronata stands were not significantly different and ranged from 6.61–10.15 to 8.36–11.02 t ha?1 yr?1 for the restored and natural stands, respectively. The productivity of 5 years R. mucronata stands reached 5.22 t ha?1 yr?1 and was significantly different from other stands. Litter productivity rates for S. alba stands was 7.77–7.85 for the restored stands and 10.15 t ha?1 yr?1 for the natural stand but differences were not significant. Our results indicate that plantations of at least 11 years have attained litter productivity rates comparable to the natural forests. This suggests that productivity of replanted mangroves is likely to reach complete recovery by this age under the prevailing environmental conditions.  相似文献

Seedlings of Acacia tortilis (Forsk) Hyne and Acacia xanthophloea Benth. were raised under controlled glasshouse conditions. Control plants were watered daily while other treatments involved withholding water for 2, 4 and 6 days with 1‐day rehydration to container capacity. Compared to A. tortilis, A. xanthophloea seedlings showed higher leaf area, relative growth rates and total dry weight production under adequate water supply conditions. However, with increased water stress, A. xanthophloea seedlings could not alter their pattern of carbon allocation, retaining their root : shoot (r : s) ratio of about 0.5. By comparison, A. tortilis seedlings shifted carbon allocation to the roots, leading to a r : s ratio of 1.5 in water‐stressed seedlings, compared to 0.5 in the control plants. The ability of A. tortilis to reallocate carbon to the roots away from the shoots and to actually increase root growth compared to A. xanthophloea was a dehydration postponement strategy that may be important in species survival during drought.  相似文献

In the semi‐desert zone of North Horr, northern Kenya, soil salinity reaches toxic levels, with extensive salt crusts at the surface. Environmental groups are involved in tree and shrub planting trials with the objective of stabilizing sand dunes and rehabilitating land. However, the performance of the various indigenous and exotic tree and shrub species in rehabilitating these saline soils has not been examined. Therefore this study aimed at evaluating the performance of various exotic and indigenous tree and shrub species in rehabilitating saline soils in North Horr. Mortality and relative growth rates for both exotic and indigenous tree and shrub species were assessed. Compared to indigenous species, exotic tree species (not naturally growing in the Marsabit ecosystem) failed to sustain an improved growth performance in saline soils of North Horr. The results of this study demonstrate that survival rates for indigenous plants in North Horr are higher than those of exotic ones. Thus, to rehabilitate saline soils and stabilize sand dunes, the use of indigenous tree and shrub species adapted to such saline conditions should be encouraged.  相似文献

The African elephant (Loxodonta africana) is known to greatly affect the structure and dynamics of vegetation. In Mwea National Reserve, elephants foraged mainly on Acacia ataxacantha and Grewia bicolor out of the five most preferred woody species. However, out of the five preferred woody species, only Grewia virosa and G. bicolor showed a positive association between their fresh use and past elephant use. All the five selected woody species showed high coppicing response after foraging, with the highest coppice growth rates recorded for Acacia brevispica and lowest for Grewia tembensis. The mean heights of woody species utilized by elephants were highest for A. brevispica and lowest for G. bicolor. The mean heights of coppices emerging after utilization by elephants were not significantly different for A. ataxacantha but were significantly shorter in the rest of the foraged species. Elephants avoided the coppices of many other woody species notably C. africana, A. tortilis, A. mellifera, Combretum aculeatum among others in the reserve. The objective of this study was to understand the capacity of woody species to recover after utilization by elephants and feeding response of elephants to new woody species re‐growth; a cycle that would define the dynamics of food resources and elephant population within the reserve.  相似文献

The woody vegetation of Lake Nakuru National Park occurs along rivers, lakeshores and flood plains. Four different sites within the Acacia xanthophloea woodlands were selected for the study. Vegetation structure was not significantly different in the four woodlands used for the study, but these sites differed in the relative density of Acacia trees. Regeneration of A. xanthophloea differed in each site, with the highest regeneration rates found in the nonfenced plots where browsing took place.  相似文献

Human–livestock–wildlife interactions have increased in Kenyan rangelands in recent years, but few attempts have been made to evaluate their impact on the rangeland habitat. This study identified drivers of increased human–livestock–wildlife interactions in the Meru Conservation Area between 1980 and 2000 and their effects on the vegetation community structure. The drivers were habitat fragmentation, decline in pastoral grazing range, loss of wildlife dispersal areas and increase in livestock population density. Agricultural encroachment increased by over 76% in the western zone adjoining Nyambene ranges and the southern Tharaka area, substantially reducing the pastoral grazing range and wildlife dispersal areas. Livestock population increased by 41%, subjecting areas left for pastoral grazing in the northern dispersal area to prolonged heavy grazing that gave woody plant species a competitive edge over herbaceous life‐forms. Consequently, open wooded grassland, which was the dominant vegetation community in 1980, decreased by c. 40% as bushland vegetation increased by 42%. A substantial proportion of agro pastoralists were encountered around Kinna and Rapsu, areas that were predominantly occupied by pastoralists three decades ago, indicating a possible shift in land use in order to spread risks associated with habitat alterations.  相似文献

Measurements were carried out of the gas exchange properties (namely, photosynthesis, stomatal conductance and transpiration rates), water use efficiency and water relations of two mangrove species, Rhizophora mucronata and Ceriops tagal at Gazi Bay, Kenya. Rhizophora mucronata had significantly higher photosynthetic rates than C. tagal. Internal CO2 concentrations were higher during the wet season than the dry season in both species. Gas exchange properties were correlated positively with photon flux density in both species. Leaf water potentials were highest during the morning and lowest at midday and were also highest in the lower canopy leaves in both species. The two mangrove species had conservative water use. Management potential for the East African mangroves based on the results of this study is suggested.  相似文献

Significant differences ( P <0.05) were found in growth of plant height, canopy cover and stem diameter of Acacia xanthophloea trees in fenced plot as compared with unfenced plot both in the wet and in the dry seasons. Finding of this study showed that although heavy browsing reduced the height and canopy of trees, it did not kill any trees and seedling regeneration took place simultaneously. Despite the presence of large herbivores that impact some considerable browsing pressure results indicate that the A. xanthophloea habitat type would continue to remain in balance in the presence of recruitment of seedlings and saplings. The conditions at the time of study indicate that the browsing on A. xanthophloea was not significant and was not serious enough to warrant management intervention at present.  相似文献
