Distribution of aquatic Oligochaeta in the Finnish Lake District   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
SUMMARY. The distribution of oligochaetes was examined at sampling stations grouped into three types: (1), in eutrophic and dystrophic areas or in areas polluted by pulp-mill wastewaters; (2), slightly eutrophic stations; (3), 'clean' stations unaffected by sewage or other inputs. Limnodrilus hoffmeisteri and Potamothrix hammoniensis were practically the only species in group 1, and the same species accounted for two thirds of the total numbers in group 2, although Peloscolex ferox and some other species also occurred. At the cleanest stations the dominating species were P. ferox, Psammoryctides barbatus, Stylodrilus heringianus and Tubifex tubifex . A factor analysis showed that L. hoffmeisteri and P. hammoniensis were associated with increased nutrients and water colour in the lower part of the epilimnion. In the metalimnion the relationship of S. heringianus and P. ferox to water colour and total nitrogen differed from that of L. hoffmeisteri and P. hammoniensis . Winter oxygen content was important for S. heringianus .  相似文献

Female mate choice is considered an important evolutionary agent, but there has been an ongoing debate over the fitness consequences it produces, especially in species that have a resource‐free mating system. We examined a potential fitness benefit resulting from the pre‐spawning mate preference in Arctic charr Salvelinus alpinus, a salmonid fish with no parental care. The females were first allowed to discriminate behaviourally between two males presented to them in a free choice test. We then tested with controlled fertilizations whether the females would accrue indirect genetic benefits for their offspring, as measured by embryonic viability, if they had mated with the male they preferred. Both parental identities influenced offspring survivorship, but the females did not consistently prefer the male which gave her the higher reproductive success. Neither was the degree of male red breeding coloration associated with female preference or the observable genetic quality. In contrast, there was a negative relationship between female coloration and her offspring survivorship, suggesting a significant trade‐off in resource investment between sexual ornamentation and reproduction. To conclude, the potential indirect fitness consequences arising from females' pre‐spawning mate preference seem to be negligible in early stages of development of Arctic charr. © 2011 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society, 2011, 103 , 602–611.  相似文献

Morphological differentiation among local trout (Salmo trutta) populations   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3
The trout (Salmo trutta) has been divided into three forms: sea-run trout, lake-run brown trout, and resident brown trout. They differ in their living environment, migratory behaviour, growth and appearance. As local trout populations are often isolated, and gene flow between them is minimal, differentiation between populations can be expected. The morphology of 1-year-old trout from ten populations representing all three forms was studied in a common-garden experiment. The fish were reared under similar environmental conditions, and 20 morphometric characters were measured from each individual fish. Marked morphological differentiation was found, and differences between populations were greater than differences between forms. The results suggest that the differences have a genetic basis, and they are likely to indicate adaptation to local environmental conditions in the native habitat of the trout.  相似文献

1. Noxious larval secretions of leaf beetles, which repel generalist predators, do not deter specialist syrphid fly predators (genus Parasyrphus ). These flies cause considerable mortality to the beetles, but little is known about their foraging behaviour.
2. Larvae of Parasyrphus nigritarsis were attracted to the volatile larval secretions produced by two prey species Phratora vitellinae and Linaeidea aenea. Parasyrphus nigritarsis feeds on both beetles in nature. Phratora vitellinae feeds on willows and utilizes host plant compounds for secretion production, while the alder-feeding L. aenea produces an autogenous secretion.
3. Fly larvae were strongly attracted to pieces of filter paper treated with larval secretion of the beetles. They attempted to feed on them for up to 7 min, and were equally attracted to the secretions of Ph. vitellinae and L. aenea . Fly larvae were also attracted to pure salicyl aldehyde, the main component of the secretion of Ph. vitellinae .
4. Fly larvae searched extensively for prey on leaves that had been damaged by beetle larvae. They also followed trails made with solutions containing faecal matter of prey larvae. They showed no differential preference for Ph. vitellinae or L. aenea , but always rejected larvae of the non-prey leaf beetle Agelastica alni .
5. Beetle secretions thus play an important, but unexpected, role in the feeding behaviour of P. nigritarsis . This predator uses the beetle secretion to locate its prey. The implications of these results for three trophic level interactions are discussed.  相似文献
