Sex difference in maximal oxygen uptake. Effect of equating haemoglobin concentration

Ten men and 11 women were studied to determine the effect of experimentally equating haemoglobin concentration ([Hb]) on the sex difference in maximal oxygen uptake (VO2max). VO2max was measured on a cycle ergometer using a continuous, load-incremented protocol. The men were studied under two conditions: 1) with normal [Hb] (153 g X L-1) and 2) two days following withdrawal of blood, which reduced their mean [Hb] to exactly equal the mean of the women (134 g X L-1). Prior to blood withdrawal, VO2max expressed in L X min-1 and relative to body weight and ride time on the cycle ergometer test were greater (p less than .01) in men by 1.11 L X min-1 (47%), 4.8 ml X kg-1 min-1 (11.5%) and 5.9 min (67%), respectively, whereas VO2max expressed relative to fat-free weight (FFW) was not significantly different. Equalizing [Hb] reduced (p less than .01) the mean VO2max of the men by 0.26 L X min-1 (7.5%), 3.2 ml X kg-1 min-1 (6.9%) or 4.1 ml X kg FFW-1 min-1 (7.7%), and ride time by 0.7 min (4.8%). Equalizing [Hb] reduced the sex difference for VO2max less than predicted from proportional changes in the oxygen content of the arterial blood and arteriovenous oxygen content difference during maximal exercise. It was concluded that the sex difference in [Hb] accounts for a significant, but relatively small portion of the sex difference in VO2max (L X min-1). Other factors such as the dimensions of the oxygen transport system and musculature are of greater importance.     

The age-sex structure of the slave population in Harris County, Texas: 1850 and 1860

The effect of the slave system on demography can be revealed by examining the age-sex structure of slave populations. The age-sex structure of slaves in Harris County, Texas is investigated using the 1850 and 1860 slave schedules. Median ages for black and mulatto slaves suggest that the population was young. Population pyramids exhibit a narrow base and top with a broad middle. The high proportion of slaves between 10 and 30 years of age and the increase in population size between 1850 and 1860 were mainly related to the importation of slaves and only partly due to natural increase. The data also show that black slaves were older on small plantations while mulattoes were older on larger farms. It is suggested that differential treatment in terms of purchase practices, assignment of tasks, food allocation, and/or differential susceptibility to infectious diseases may account for this pattern.     

Co-segregation of a gene encoding a deletion ligand for Tcrb-V3+ T cells with Mtv-3

A gene encoding the endogenous superantigen Mls^c, which deletes Tcrb-V3⁺ T cells in the NOD inbred mouse strain, was found to co-segregate with Mtv-3 on chromosome 11. This identifies a fourth gene encoding a deletion ligand for Tcrb-V3⁺ T cells and extends recently published observations in support of the hypothesis that a number of endogenous superantigens are the products of Mtv proviruses. The biometry of gills of 0-group European flounder

The gill surface area of 0-group, post-metamorphic Pleuronectes flesus L. was examined using digital image analysis software and expressed in relation to body mass according to the equation log Y=loga+c logW ( a =239·02; c =0·723). The components that constitute gill area, total filament length, interlamellar space and unilateral lamellar area were measured. The measurement of the length of every filament on all eight arches showed that commonly used methods of calculation can lead to an under-estimation of up to 24% of total filament length. Direct measurements of unilateral lamellar area with digital image analysis showed that previously reported gill area data for the same species was over-estimated by as much as 58%. In addition, in this species the neglect of gill pouch asymmetry after metamorphosis, can bring about a 14% over-estimation of total gill area.     

Biosynthesis of lasalocid A: biochemical mechanism for assembly of the carbon framework

Labeling experiments on the biosynthesis of the polyether antibiotic lasalocid A (1) using carboxylic acid precursors bearing 13C, 2H, and 3H labels at various positions established the following: (1) 2H or 3H at C-2 of propionate or 2H at C-2 of butyrate was partially retained at C-12 and C-14 of 1, respectively. (2) 2H at C-2 of propionate or at C-2 and C-3 of succinate did not label C-10. These and earlier data [Hutchinson, C. R., Sherman, M. M., Vederas, J. C., & Nakashima, T. T. (1981) J. Am. Chem. Soc. 103, 5953; Hutchinson, C. R., Sherman, M. M., McInnes, A. G., Walter, J. A., & Vederas, J. C. (1981) J. Am. Chem. Soc. 103, 5956] are consistent with a hypothesis for the stereochemical control of lasalocid A biosynthesis, whose main tenets are that the configuration of C-12 and C-14 is determined by the stereoselectivity of the carbon chain forming condensation between acyl thio ester and 2-carboxyacyl thio ester intermediates and that the configuration of C-11 and C-15 results from the reduction of 2-keto thio ester intermediates with opposing stereospecificities.     

Rapid determination of antimicrobial susceptibility patterns ofListeria monocytogenes isolates by the autobac AIS and MIC procedures

A total of 34 isolates ofListeria monocytogenes were tested against ampicillin, cephalothin, chloramphenicol, erythromycin, tetracycline, and penicillin-G using the Autobac 3-h AIS and the Autobac 5-h MIC procedures. The results were compared to susceptibility category interpretations and MICs determined using the Sceptor system. With the Sceptor System, all isolates were interpreted to be moderately susceptible to ampicillin and penicillin-G, and susceptible to the four other antibiotics. With the Autobac AIS, all isolates were interpreted to be susceptible to all the antibiotics except penicillin-G. All but one of the 34 isolates were interpreted to be resistant to penicillin-G with the Autobac AIS test. The remaining isolate was interpreted to be indeterminant. The Autobac AIS test was unsatisfactory for determining the susceptibility ofL. monocytogenes isolates to penicillin-G. The Autobac MIC results correlated well with the MIC results of the Sceptor system provided that the Autobac was programmed as though it were testing enterococci. The Autobac MIC reported penicillin-G MICs in units per milliliter and required the use of a conversion factor to obtain micrograms per milliliter, and did not allow for the testing of erythromycin. The Autobac MIC susceptibility category interpretations must not be used, as they were derived from an outdated susceptibility standard. The Autobac MIC test may be used if the limitations given above are observed.
