Computer-assisted Follow-up Register for the North-East of Scotland

An automated follow-up register for the detection of iatrogenic thyroid disease has been established as a joint venture between the general practitioners in the north-east of Scotland and the thyroid clinic of Aberdeen General Hospitals.The data-processing operations in the system are handled by an International Computers Limited 4/50 computer. Patients are followed up at predetermined intervals and the system has been designed to process, screen, and store clinical and biochemical follow-up data and report results to the patients, general practitioners, and the hospital records department.     

Formation of mitochondria in Boderia (Protozoa: Foraminiferida)

Summary Approximately 25 per cent of the mitochondria in one day old, rapidly growing, schizonts of Boderia vary considerably in their morphology from the consistently spherical organelles present in adult animals. Mitochondrial biogenesis by division is indicated and illustrated. The internal reorganisation of the mitochondrion which occurs prior to fission has not been reported previously for this organelle.     

Comparative studies on the hypotensive effect of LHRH antagonists in anesthetized rats

Certain neuropeptides are known to cause a hypotensive response, thought to be due to mast cell degranulation. The effects of five antagonists of luteinizing hormone-releasing hormone on blood pressure and heart rate were compared in the anesthetized rat. When given intravenously, all five compounds induced hypotensive and bradycardiac effects. The order of potency for these effects was Nal-Arg Antagonist approximately detirelix [( N-Ac-D-Nal(2)1, D-pCl-Phe2,D-Trp3,D-hArg(Et2)6,D-Ala10]LHRH) greater than [N-Ac-D-Nal(2)1, D-pCl-Phe2,D-Pal(3)3,D-hArg(Et2)6,L-hArg (Et2)8,D-Ala10]LHRH (RS-26306) approximately antide greater than [N-Ac-D-Nal(2)1, D-pCl-Phe2,D-Pal(3)3,6, L-hArg(Et2)8,D-Ala10]LHRH (RS-15378) and did not parallel the order of antiovulatory potencies of these compounds. The hypotensive activity of LHRH antagonists, therefore, appeared dissociable from their antiovulatory activity. RS-26306 and RS-15378 appeared to have the greatest therapeutic ratios.     

Patterns of sequence variation in the mitochondrial D-loop region of shrews

Direct sequencing of the mitochondrial displacement loop (D-loop) of shrews (genus Sorex) for the region between the tRNA(Pro) and the conserved sequence block-F revealed variable numbers of 79-bp tandem repeats. These repeats were found in all 19 individuals sequenced, representing three subspecies and one closely related species of the masked shrew group (Sorex cinereus cinereus, S. c. miscix, S. c. acadicus, and S. haydeni) and an outgroup, the pygmy shrew (S. hoyi). Each specimen also possessed an adjacent 76-bp imperfect copy of the tandem repeats. One individual was heteroplasmic for length variants consisting of five and seven copies of the 79-bp tandem repeat. The sequence of the repeats is conducive to the formation of secondary structure. A termination-associated sequence is present in each of the repeats and in a unique sequence region 5' to the tandem array as well. Mean genetic distance between the masked shrew taxa and the pygmy shrew was calculated separately for the unique sequence region, one of the tandem repeats, the imperfect repeat, and these three regions combined. The unique sequence region evolved more rapidly than the tandem repeats or the imperfect repeat. The small genetic distance between pairs of tandem repeats within an individual is consistent with a model of concerted evolution. Repeats are apparently duplicated and lost at a high rate, which tends to homogenize the tandem array. The rate of D- loop sequence divergence between the masked and pygmy shrews is estimated to be 15%-20%/Myr, the highest rate observed in D-loops of mammals. Rapid sequence evolution in shrews may be due either to their high metabolic rate and short generation time or to the presence of variable numbers of tandem repeats.      

cDNA cloning and expression of a potato (Solanum tuberosum) invertase

A cDNA clone encoding an invertase isoenzyme has been isolated from a potato leaf cDNA library. The deduced amino acid sequence shows significant similarities to previously characterised invertases. The highest degree of overall similarity, including the signal peptide sequence, is to carrot cell wall invertase, suggesting that the potato gene encodes an apoplastic enzyme. Expression of the gene, as determined by RT-PCR, is detected in stem and leaf tissue, and at lower levels in tuber, but is absent from roots.
